Topic: How does one measure his bowling speed ?Posted: 07 December 2005 at 10:51pm |
|
Hi,
I would like to measure my bowling speed. Is there an inexpensive way of doing it ? I read that speed guns are used to measure bowling speed, but does anyone know how does it work and how does it measure the speed (of the ball) ? These speed guns seem to be very expensive and are not affordable for individuals, so I am looking for other alternatives and creative ideas. Thanks, CricStar |

I think the speed gun is the only way.

The speed gun works using The Doppler Effect - go to any search engine to see exactly what that is.

there is a special ball which has a speedometer on it. Of course its the size of a cricket ball and its sold at Bedessee in Toronto for $40. Cost Effective. |

Really?... I didn't know about this. $40 is quite cheap compared to the price of the speed gun.

i will go with the speed gun.there are many problems and factors to be considered while getting an accurate speed.i know that speed gun isn't 100% accurate but lets not forget that it is considered as one of the standard speed measuring equipment.so whatever speed you get on the speed gun, will in-fact be your bowling speed.on the other hand if you buy this speedometer ball it can give you a totally different result which may please you but maynot be as significant when it comes to professional cricket .so basically you are left with a cheap toy ball in the end.(i checked with google but the only ball i found with a speedometer was a base ball, which has a different circumference, weight, air resistance etc. i cant trust something which isn't on the net, please send me a link or a website where i can find such a ball). |

Doppler effect... hum interesting, i thought they used it only to locate things like ships and airplanes through radars. its just a law,so dosent really matter where they apply it. ha ha so stupid of me Edited by zubeee |

I agree with you. It's better to buy the more expensive speed gun and get accuracy rather than buying the cheap ball which is probably not as accurate as the speed gun. |

How do you actually use a speed gun? Is the speed officially measured from the front where the batsman is? At what angle?

All I know is that the speeds that are showed up on the TV, is from when the ball is release and not when it reaches the batsman. And you'll be surprise that a 90 MPH delivery slows down a lot off the pitch!

That would explain a lot. It would also suggest that the length of the delivery must have a significant impact on the accuracy of the reading. Doppler radars only detect the component of the target's velocity going toward the antenna, and a bouncer would come out of the bowler's hand at quite a large downward angle compared to other balls, making the reading not properly representative of how fast the ball is going, if you know what I mean. |

The actutal speed = square root of [(horizontal vector)^2 + (vertical vector)^2] In the past the average speeds were calculated. In this both vectors are taken in to account, but the speed given is the average speed of the delivery. Avg. speed can be easily measured by measuring the time taken for a ball to reach the batsman. the number of frames of a camera will give it easily. If you know the air resistance and the degree it slows down the ball by differentiation you could find the initial speed of the ball. (This is for people who know what I have posted) |

I had been searching the net for articles on seam bowling lately and
found an interesting article which shows you an easy way of measuring
your speed. I know it might not be as accurate as they show on TV but a
way of finding the speed nonetheless
. I will just paste the particular section containing the method.
PS: wow nice user titles! ...I am the 12th man huh ? lol and who's that...that mean i am not even in the team now ![]() Edited by STNOOR - 03 July 2007 at 5:20pm |

This is the one I would recommend. http://www.opticsplanet.net/speedcheck-radar.html However, I dont quite get the fetish many people have for finding out speed or quoting speed. Most speeds people quote are inaccurate and many seem to be fixated on numbers.Id guess that 90% of people playing below FC that quote speeds of themselves or their friends are wrong either because its complete guess work or poor equipment.
PS from my experience the speed ball is a waste of time. Whilst I am a quick bowler, the fact Ive had it regularly clocking over 90mph of 3 steps shows it isn't accurate.

Hi,
Did you ever get an answer on this - I work for Radio Five Live and we've got the Darren Gough cricket phone in tomorrow night from 8pm - would you want to ask Darren your questions?
Let me know
Mobile is 07809 597 753 or email garth.brameld@bbc.c.o.uk
All the best
Garth.

When you win the toss - bat.
If you are in doubt, think about it - then bat. If you have very big doubts, consult a colleague - then bat. |

Jeez, you guys pulled this one out of know where.
Yeh, you can by a speed ball, which does tell you how fast your delivery was -but you can't hit it with a bat obviously.
Otherwise get a speed gun.

i think if we apply the formula
V = S/T it should tell you the speed of the ball ?. I think this is the formula that speed guns work on too ??. Edited by STNOOR - 24 July 2007 at 11:38am |

Speed = Distance/Time
If you know the distance of your bowl divide it by how long it took to get to the other side. It might work, get a tape measure and mark out where your bowl lands and get someone with a good stop watch and time it. |

I was sitting here trying to work out what the S in the equation stood for, i cant believe i didn't work out it was speed. I always use V for velocity

no S isn't Speed, in equation i posted S = Displacement. that is total distance traveled.
