What is everyone's thoughts on this issue? I'm not sure if this topic already has a thread if so probably best if this thread is locked.

Anyway I for one condemn the decision made by the ICC. Sure I can see their point of view and seeing one sided spankings are not good for the image of the game, but the only way these teams can develop is to play test playing nations on a regular basis and the fact is they just aren't.

It's great to see young and older talents from these nations having a go and sometimes succeeding on their day and helping guide their teams to unlikely victories and even deep into the tournament (I.E. Kenya, Ireland, Zimbabwe.)

Even today New Zealand are taking a very cautious approach against the Kenyans, which would give Kenya a lot of confidence and a feeling that they have gained some respect.

I also respect Graeme Swann's comment, saying that taking the associate nations out of the world cup takes the 'world' out of world cup. If these teams are taken out of tournament the game will never get the chance to truely expand the game globally.

Thats all for my rant against ICC, feed me your thoughts.

Most of the associate nations have done well over the last few years and if at all there was a time to give them more exposure, it was now.

As Graeme Swann as rightly said, it is taking the "World" out of the World Cup, I think it will also prompt players from Scotland, Ireland to move to England or look for other options because the cances of playing at top level being with their nation will be remote.

A very sad decision by the ICC another one that is prompted by the intension of making more money and nothing else.

It is one of those rare occasions that I agree with the decision made by ICC. I think the next world cup will be more interesting than this one because of this decision.
As for the minnows not getting the chance to play top teams, world cup is not the proper stage to give them that chance. ICC should include some matches or mini tournaments involving minnows and top teams in the FTP to give minnows the chance to play with test playing teams.

I agree with this move, too many unmeaningful games.  Sorry, but Ponting is correct, getting hammered won't make you learn anything.  These teams need to slowly creep up, then when at least they come like Bangladesh, they can enter the WC.

Aftercourse, if West Indies falls down to 11th place in the rankings, then i'll complain!

Its a good decision. The only bad thing about the decision is that, they are allowing 2 extra teams. I would have been happier with just 8 real test teams playing round robin. That is the only way WC could be meaningful and interesting.

I would love to see the 8 team comments once the QF line up for this WC is out.

I agree with Sam, 8 teams is too little.  Why?  Bangladesh should be a much better team within the next 4 years, and so should Zimbabwe.  12 teams mightn't be such a bad idea, seeing Ireland has proved to be no easy pushover and the Neds have been progressing well.  Their batsmen seem to be clean hitters of the ball.

This decision smacks of uncertainty on the part of the ICC.  I get the impression they know something's wrong with the WC format , but they don't know what it is!   I believe the associate nations should be playing and the one change I'd make is shorten the tournament by 2 weeks - a more condensed event would hold one's attention better.

Absolutely, agree with sledge there, even the present format will be far more exciting if we have just two rather than four teams qualifying as we discussed earlier.

The other thing is that the qualifiers for the associate nations must happen as close as possible from the WC. There is no way Kenya and Canada deserve to be in ahead of Afghanistan and Scotland.

I can live with 12 teams the most, 6 in a group.  10 isn't to bad for this day but come in the next 4 years, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Ireland could be a good competition and if that do happen, it would be hard to see one of them miss out.  16 teams is a definite waste.
