Chance for Ponting to really establish himself in world cricket, if he can get a ton in India it will show that he is more than capable of making runs in India... he only has one ton in India; albeit he hasn't played a hell of a lot of tests in India (that one failed 2001 series really killed his reputation at that time).

Watson also has posted 50, Australia is 130/1 after lunch, with the Indian fielding rather lacklustre and another poor start by Sharma, who is lacking both pace and rhythm (no balls aren't helping).

Very small crowd. Looks like the IPL has ruined both Ishant Sharma (... $900k contract) and the test crowds.

Very predictable start. It will go with a familiar yet predicted pattern. Both teams will score close to or in excess of 500 runs and the boring match will be drawn.

India's fielding has never been top class anyway. I don't see the point of persisting with Ishant when they have a better test match bowler in Sreesanth. Ishant hardly plays any domestic first class games, this wont do him any good. Since his lucrative IPL contract, he has gone one way, that is down the hill.

Such poor crowd in the so called cricket power house brings shame to the game.

Sharma is now injured apparently...
... For Australia I've seen Johnson, Harris, Bollinger, Lee, Tait, even Hilfenhaus register above 147kph. We probably have about 20-30 bowlers who bowl above 140kph regularly. India doesn't even have one (even Khan is barely 140kph these days). I don't really understand it. Sure environment, genetics and so forth comes in, but not even one? Pakistanis are genetically similar and they have dozens of sharp paced bowlers.  Sharma is really tall and is getting no bounce, even on this crap wicket, and his pace is barely 135kph.
India need a really strong, hard working fast bowler. Someone in that Javagal Srinath/Andy Bichel sort of mould.

Sreesanth would have done no harm to India's chances. It is just wrong selection. They have played Ishant on those spells he delivered in Australia - but that's a long way back now. He is playing merely on reputation. He has not delivered anything of note of late.

Harbhajan has become toothless too. Sehwag is probably a better bowler at the moment

Mate that's almost 3 years back, and back then he was hitting 145kph regularly and was getting marvellous bounce in Australia. He looked a real find.

Harbhajan, I've said it before... he gives the ball no air, relies too much on his doosra. I'd really like to see him stop bowling like a robot, and actually look for bounce and spin. Ojha looks much better, but he's not a wicket taker, he's economical and that's all.

Ponting is out, run out. Such a shame. He gets out, but it's not even due to good bowling. He really is having a lot of poor luck.

172/3 now.
India has a good chance in this test if they can get Australia out under 350. India dont have any replacement for Ishant. Maybe Sreesanth but he is also not the right bowler for test cricket.
India dont have any real fast bowling heroes who can inspire the youngsters to be like them. Everyone wants to be a Tendulkar, Gavasker, Dravid etc.

Sresanth was mauled in the warm up tour game. They're probably better off playing Mishra in his place. A dibbly dabbler medium bowler like Mithun will get pulverised by the Australia top order. Spin is always going to get the wickets. That's the reason why India beat Aust at home but struggle against SL. SL batsmen can play spin, the Aussies struggle... otherwise India won't get 20 wickets.
Australia need at least 400 to be a chance. They are 179/3... Watson needs to make a big ton and Hussey and North MUST score.

i thin Katich will struggle in this series against Zaheer. He has a poor technic to walk across the crease. On these low bouncing wickets he has a very little chance against Zaheer.

Cricinfo:

Seemed like Zaheer initiated a verbal joust as Ponting went back. Ponting came back towards the Indian fielders who were celebrating and had something to say as well, pointing his bat at Zaheer. Billy Bowden had to intervene, and Ponting left the scene eventually

I hope he gets atleast 1 match ban.

Really not a great day of cricket. Australians are barely scoring at 2.5 runs an over, the Indians are short 2 bowlers... no 5th bowler and Sharma is injured (not that he really counts anyway).
This game could teeter to a draw for all we know. It will depend on how Australia bowl. Ponting's dismissal was the key, because he always scores at a good tick.

Khan in his first over back gets Hussey with the old ball and now it's 4 wickets down. Could this be the moment that the Indians were looking for?

North bowled by Khan!
This is the exact reason why he and Hussey should really be scrutinised over their positions in the side. Hussey has passed his use by date and North is simply not good enough.

Nelson strikes again!

I have my doubts about Hussey, but then he goes and does something special when you least expect it and turns a game around.

Plenty of others queuing up for North's place!

Its amazing that India with only 3 Bowlers gets Australia under pressure. They cant score runs and also cant hold their wickets.

I was wrong. Zaheer has done it brilliantly. I guess Hussey did not play it right. He went too cautious. North is just useless. We all saw that in the Pakistan series. He is good for nothing. Hussey too lives too much on the edge - a career saving century whenever he is under threat wont help. He will have to be mroe consistent.

Hussey plays well when nothing works for Australia. He is their man for the crisis. I dont know how North got his chance in the team. He wouldnt even get a chance in the pakistani batting lineup. Australia need a proper Batsman on his place.

India is very much on top now. How will they get the bouncers for Sehwag on this wicket?

I really, really can't see why North has been retained. If they wanted a 30+ batsman why didn't they go for Chris Rogers, Michael Klinger or Phillip Jaques?

I'd rather see a young batsman being given a go, and his bowling is obsolete. 6-for against a pretty poor Paki line up isn't much.

Australia definetly have much better players than him.
Even White would be a better option. What is with Symonds? Cant he come back in the side forever?

White, Dave Hussey.... mate there's plenty of experienced guys. Plus younger talent like Shaun Marsh, Callum Ferguson, George Bailey, Phil Hughes, Usman Khawaja, etc.
Much better players than he.

I'd rather have Ferguson in place of North. i would not be surprised if either of Khwaja or Ferguson are selected for the Ashes.

Both are very good, particularly the young Usman Khawaja, who has a better record of converting scores to 100s.
Phillip Hughes, I still believe, is a very, very dangerous batsman. Mark my words about him. He played 3 innings in the Ashes and was dropped. In one of those innings he was out to a no ball (poor umpiring). His technique is unique, but he is effective.

I rate Ferguson, when I saw him in ODI's before he got injured, he really impressed me.  Phil Hughes is dangerous yes but them balls going into his ribcage really seems to cause him discomfort.  He'll get away with that against some teams but can't see him getting away against a team like England with that sort of weakness but that could be used for the Ashes thread.

And by the looks of the scoreboard, India is on top.  Will be watching tonight's play, seeing I can wake up anytime I feel like on Saturday.  Ishant Sharma needs to be dropped as well.  He hasn't done anything of note for a long while now.  The guy needs a break to come back refreshed, play some domestic games, bully the smaller guys to get back some confidence.

And also, Watson's ton here is why I was never going to call for Hughes to open the innings.  When it's not broken, don't fix it.  Katich and Watson has been in form and doing well and to be honest, you can hardly get any better than what those guys have been doing so what's the point in changing it just to accomodate one player?

I remember when Mike Hussey made his test debut, he had to open, because that was the available option at that time with injury to Justin langer.  Think Martyn soon called it quits after that so he got the middle order spot and kept it until now.

Agreed - but North has to go for sure now. I hope for Australia's sake he does not score a hundred in the second innings. He just needs to sit out and let the better players take their chances.

Dhoni's keeping was atrocious today - looked like he is related to Kamran Akmal.

Hussey used to open for WA Spinny. He is an opener.

And with regard to North, you can't make ducks and then make amends for it with one big innings. It's almost like he saves his spot by making a good score every 6 innings and doing nothing in between.

I know Hussey was quite fond of opening but I'm just saying the only reason he opened was because of Justin langer's injury.  When Langer was back from injury, Hussey had to go in the middle order and take up Martyn's role.  You don't move someone who is having great success just to accomodate someone else, when by the way you don't know if he'll become as successful.

Also, that's why I found India's tactics in the World Cup by batting Tendulkar at number 4 to be that of total rubbish!!

But yeah, lastly, North needs to go!

Yes I think Hughes could bat anywhere! I don't see why he would do poorly elsewhere. For mine, it's harder to go from middle order to opener, than the other way around.
But you know just look at ODI cricket, we've seen Clarke, Ponting, Katich, Gilchrist, Mark Waugh, Haddin all open for Australia with success. If you're a very good batsman you can bat anywhere and that's fact.
The reason why Sachin at 4 is bad is because he's the BEST  batsman, thus he should have the opportunity to bat out the whole 50 overs.

Zaheer Khan is the man again for India, although a fantastic century, his third in three innings on this tour, by Shane Watson has meant that the game is evenly poised. The track is slow because of earlier rain but is expected to become quicker as the game goes on. Actually the rainy season has just come to an end here in India and the winter season will now begin so there has been plenty of rain in the last 4 months hence the pitches might be a little slow.

North needs to go, no denying that. Khawaja or Hughes should get a look in. I had already said that Sreesanth should be played ahead of Ishant but India will play Ishant, they did that and they suffer as expected.

This pitch isn't great for batting. Australia is now 8 wickets down for 373 after a wonderful knock from the keeper, Paine and an invaluable 47 from Johnson who's back in form after an indifferent summer for the all rounder with the bat.
If Australia can put to about 400 or 420, with Hilfenhaus  being a decent no.10, then I think it will be competitive. The Aussies bowlers will be fresh and ready to rumble, and the 1 and a half days off batting my Australia would mean that Bollinger, who was a concern with jetlag, won't be facing the jetlag as much. I will be interested to see how India bat. Someone like Sehwag who pushes hard at the ball may struggle with the low bounce, but I wonder if India will score faster.
