The latest update of the famous ICC Series:
The Cricket World review
Having played the ICC Series for a number of years now, it was nice to be able to dive straight into this game without having to worry about which buttons did what, or how the game worked. When I did dive in, I was certainly impressed with the game. The tried and tested layout of ICC still works and the game really does give you the chance to take your team or nation to glory your own particular way.
What this Ashes Edition gives you is the ability to replay 5 classic Ashes series of the past (1882, 1958, 1970, 1981, and 2005) as well as the current Ashes series. Player data has also been updated, as well as injuries – so you will have to do without Vaughan and Jones for The Ashes. Is the game a realistic simulation of international cricket? I would have to say it is, especially if you play the game through on a session by session basis. The ability to pinpoint opposing batsmen’s weaknesses and attack them really makes a difference, as does the weather conditions and how you take advantage of them. The aggression levels are very good, and to do well, you have to gauge when a batsman is settled enough to be able to attack and not get out. Attack from the off, and you will get out, set defensive fields, and the scoring will slow but you’ll struggle for wickets. Basic tenets of the game they may be, but ICC implements these, and more to give you a very realistic and rewarding gaming experience. We liked: • The ability to play old Ashes series • Realistic gaming experience • Easy to get into, and easy to play • Comprehensive database • All international and English tournaments with up to date structures • Ashes Fever DVD thrown in We didn’t like: • Injuries impacting on the 2005 Ashes series • The auto-play feature THE VERDICT: International Cricket Captain is a fine game, and this special edition lives up to its reputation. The detail, statistics and realism are all there, and this all adds up to a game well worth getting hold of. Cricket World rating: Interface: Excellent, easy to navigate, easy to understand: 9/10 Graphics: Slightly let down with the highlights graphics, but otherwise very good: 7/10 Gameplay: Excellent – a wealth of options and tactics to choose from makes this a very playable game: 8/10 TOTAL: 24/30 And here's how I got in replaying the 1882, 2005 and 2006 Ashes. I am still too annoyed about the patch farce on the 2005 version to contemplate buying another of this series

You could try and win one instead.
I might be able to retain the Ashes, but even achieving mediocrity with Somerset is defeating me at the moment.

It's just a Sim which is fun.[IMG]smileys/smiley36.gif" align="middle" /> I don't know why people are so addicted to it. I prefer games where you can control the team although I used to love the 2000 version.

ICC Ashes Edition 2006 A Review by Rhys Williams Compared to the previous two
reviews of this game on Cricket World, I’m afraid I’m going to have a couple of
contrasting opinions. Let’s start off with the good things about the game: -
The ability to
control any English county or international team provides an excellent insight
into management life (to a reasonable degree). -
The transfer
system in the county system is as good and up-to-date as ever. -
The statistics
of the players are sound (maybe the odd mistake), which provides a realistic
view on world cricket. -
The whole
match-play setup is easy to use. -
The internet
gaming section means that anyone from anywhere can challenge someone else to a
match at any time. Now, as a user of ICC 2001,
ICC 2005 and now ICC Ashes Edition 2006, it does have some quite large
drawbacks in my opinion. The game interface appears
not to have changed at all since the ICC 2001 version that I first played a
year ago. The whole game structure has
not changed since 2001. A feature that I have been dying for is to be able to
play the The graphics have not
changed at all - they are very poor for this day and age. So, what does this all suggest? Is ICC 2006 Ashes Edition merely a ‘patch’ or update
to ICC 2005, which was an update to ICC 2001? Or is it a fantastic simulation
game with realistic results being produced? I, for one, cannot answer
that for you. It is up to you whether you enjoy the game on its merits, or put
it down because of its drawbacks. What does the future hold for ICC Series? Well, inside the game case,
it suggests that 2007 is a big year for the game. And, hopefully, this is the
truth, as a promised new version around the time of the 2007 World Cup is due.
A new interface, new graphics and new everything is due. Just what I, and
hundreds of other ICC users wanted. So, with a new release so soon, was this release
pointless? A rundown of the game: GRAPHICS: 5/10 – Sorry, I just don’t think they
live up to the standard. MATCHPLAY:
8/10 – Always been very easy to get
the hang of. GAMEPLAY: 1/10 – Same as it always has been.
For any new users of ICC,
this is a superb buy, and a great game to have. But to any of those who have
used ICC before, don’t bother with it, it’s just another update. TOTAL: 14/30 equates to 5/10. |

Love the game but there are so many things it could do a million times better.
1. Give team talks to give the team spirit 2. Ability to build new stadiums 3. Give you better training options, you could let young batsman develop new strokes like the sweep so by 30 they will have all the strokes and all you need to do is perfect them. 4. Give players attributes like, how good he is with the media. ability to cope with stress (Tres 0) etc etc. 5. Design your own player. Sell him to your favourite club and let him improve. 6. Each player could have a goal they would like to reach in their career like score a triple century or something and if they pass it they learn something new. 7. You're the manager so you do press conferences, make decisions, send the team to the jungle to train over the winter anything. 8. Newspaper headlines with the results and mentions to the best performers. 9. Better graphics for matches that make it more realistic like a close up of the bowler or something. 10. Option to bribe umpires and if you get caught you lose your job. Basically I have stolen all these ideas from football games but they actually could work in this game. It frustrates me they never try anything new in this game it really does when just a little more time and effort would make this a classic game that would make cricket a more popular sport. Thanks for the competition JP, hope this review is up to standards. |

I downloaded a trial of it for 2 days and I must say I get bored after using the same team so I quit. Then later when im bored I play it again using a different team I rate it 5/10. It's not very realistic and the players on the other team are bull crap from India who is G Singh or S Sarvi something like that he took 6-49 in a test against us WI!

You two must be really good at this my best batsman is Larry Thorpe who has an average of 58. Although i have a really good bowler called Adil Rashid. He plays for Yorkshire and i recived him at the age of 23 (He started off at 18)for 34,000. He might be a great leg spinner for England in the future. He has taken over 2000 wickets. However after this happens numbers are cut off. For example Rashid's wicket count would be 0 and he's average starts again. The first digit on the amount of 5 wicket hauls is also missing. Has anyone experienced this before?

yes i have. I had a bowler who took 3234 first class wickets and 1001 test wickets. It said that he's only taken 1234 wickets with an average of 40 odd but it actually should have been about 23 because his wicket count had disappeared. His 5 wicket haul count stayed however.

My review of the game:
ICC Cricket Captain 2006 Ashes Edition
Being an ICC newbie, I felt it would take me a few weeks at least to get used to the controls, menu screens and all the other bits and pieces that make up the best-selling cricket management game. I was delighted to find then, after a quick installation, I could jump straight into the action without going through several thousand different menus to tweak every single part of the experience.
Probably the best thing about the game is the level of realism it gives you, with thousands of licensed players and all the English County teams, and still being great fun to play and seriously addictive. The different game modes give it ultra long playability without ever getting boring - and the Ashes series of the past will mean your Dad can relive the moments with the players he's familiar with. The Ashes game modes is probably the main game mode and is very detailed and can keep you on the edge of your seat in anticipation at the thought of reclaiming the precious urn.
The full game mode allows you to take control of any one of the English County teams as well as the full England side (or you can earn your stripes at County level first if you prefer) and every aspect of the County game is identical to real life. But then again, what else would you expect from ICC 06?
If you become bored with the single player mode, the multiplayer mode is a great laugh and can be used as an excuse to get really competitive with your mates. Playing an Ashes series in two player mode may not be the best idea though, you'll probably have to toss a coin to decide who has to be the Aussies. In addition to this Internet Play is also added, so you can challenge fellow ICC players around the world with your county or international team.
With the Ashes Fever DVD thrown in at no extra penny, you can relive the best of 2005's historic Ashes series before setting about reclaiming them in the game - or playing the exact same series in an attempt to emulate Fletch's men.
Overall, it really is a great game - and an absolute must for all cricket lovers.
Graphics: 7/10 - Comical but not too unrealistic, the players do take some excellent catches - and you can see what's happening.
Game play: 9/10 - Highly addictive gaming guaranteed with plenty of options to mess with.
Sound: 8/10 - Detailed if sometimes random commentary by Johnathan Agnew, overall very good indeed.
Playability: 10/10 - You'll never ever get bored of this - unlimited hours of gaming guaranteed.
OVERALL: 9/10 - In one word? Absolutely brilliant. |

They could, but it was the first ICC game I have played - of course most people who have played the other versions think this is just an update of averages, with no extras, but for me the game is unique and I really like it. As for the features, we'll have to wait and see if the creators act on that. I suppose the graphics are the real let down of the game, but when you consider other games of a similar nature e.g. Championship Manager (soccer management) the action is just a 3D pitch with little icons that look like bowling pins running around. So for me that the game actually has (admittedly unrealistic looking) players is a bonus in itself. Though I feel if the graphics were to be improved the game itself would improve greatly. I also feel the layout of the game's menu screens is fairly old fashioned - it lacks colour and needs to look more modern.

I've never played any of these games before and agree it is very easy to get into (and addicted too) but having seen football manager i thought a good improve ment might be to add an individual attributes page for a player. ie a value out of twenty for things like fielding, catching, batting against spinners, seamers, running between wickets ect. this would add another level to the game and make it some what easier to distinguish class players from lucky players, and give you more to think about than just a few averages.
On a personal note, whats going off with Nottingham's budget? they host major internationals on a regular basis yet get less than almost every team. It would also be nice to see some gate takings stat that changes depending on how well you do (I'm sick of getting nothing from 20/20's)
but that might unbalance things
my final note, promise, is that it would be nice if like on football manager you could run, or even play in, other countries leagues. or at least view Scotland and Irelands teams before playing them in the pro league (I just selected a spinners pitch against ireland not realising they had Afridi and Mushtaque playing for them)

On a more amusing note the next ashes series just played out on my game, England won 5-0 which is a joke in itself, but Chris read scored 4 centuries and has become the 6th best test batsman in the world and put on a 200 run patnership with monty panesar who finished 72*, I can't wait to watch it.

i play this game quite a lot and think its excellent.
however the degrees of realism can be a bit lapse... i have got 505-5 in a 50 overs match with surrey with only graeme smith hitting a century 101runs off 60 balls got 618-6 on the 1st day of a county match with essex got 1284-7 in a county match with jaques kallis scorin 642 4 lancashire but the piece de resistance has to be my season with yorkshire. challenge trophy played 9 group games won 8 lost 1 net rr +33..beat somerset in final 2020 played 8 grop games won 7 lost 1 net rr +13.4 pro 40 played 8 won 8 net rr +45 county championship played 16 won 16 73bat 48bowl total points score 345 runners up lancashire 209 |

Here are some comments from a long time ICC addict.
Things improved in 2006: - spinners don't dominate as much, which is much more realistic. - AI batting seems to be a little better. It is harder to bowl teams out, and test bowling averages seem to be more accurte now. - World cup every 4 years (yay!) - International schedule is properly balanced, no more going 6 years without playing Zimbabwe for example. - Player generation slightly improved, get more all-rounders now. - Powerplays and 20/20. Wishlist for 2007: - More sixes! - Higher run rates. 3 rpo is no longer the standard in modern FC cricket. In OD's teams get to 300 (and chase those targets) more often on good pitches. - Rain in OD's, proper Duckworth/Lewis implementation - More realistic salaries for good generated batsmen. The CPU teams can often not afford to keep their top batsmen because of insanely high salaries. This leads to an imbalance in the long-term where CPU teams can never post big scores and the game becomes bowler dominated. - Bigger and more varied international schedule. THere is a lot more ODI cricket played these days. Addition of more ODI tourneys and perhaps 20/20 championship would be nice. These changes would probably only require slight tweaking to the game engine (perhaps with the exception of Duckworth/Lewis), so I really hope the game makers listen to the customers are try to improve the game. |

Just wondering, are you playing on easy level? 600 in a day in FC is quite outstanding, especially if it is early in the game (first 10 years). |
