Jon Lewis has bowled consistently very well and he has taken his opportunities when given them, he averages 23 at ODI level and has an economy rate of just 3.8 in the game, so why is he not given regular opportunities in the team?

I feel in the ODI format of the game especially, he is a crucial player, in my opinion in an ODI with all the England seamers fit I would have him as one of my 4 seamers, in the list of all the possible seamers available, I would have him above Harmison, Simon Jones, Mahmood, Broad, Plunkett, Hoggard and Tremlett ain my choice of seamers. Yes Mahmood has got in the side ahead of him but Mahmood isn't very consistent in ODI's and his economy rate is over a run a ball, Lewis takes more wickets than Mahmood and you could save yourself a good 25-30 runs in an innings by having Lewis in the side ahead of Mahmood.

He is 31 now, so he's only really got 5 or 6 years at the most left in him as an England bowler, but I think that in those years Lewis is a bowler you just have to put in your team, against Pakistan he bowled beautifully in the ODI series, easily the best of all the England bowlers (which were Gough, Broad, Mahmood, Dalrymple, Pietersen, Collingwood and Yardy), but in the Champions Trophy Mahmood, Dalrymple and Yardy got in the side, but why was Lewis left out?

For those people who have seen him, what do you think of him, does he deserve to be in the England ODI team, do you rate him as an international bowler and should he have been selected for England earlier?

What do you think of Jon Lewis as a bowler?

In my opinion, if I was an England selector, and if I was asked whether Jon Lewis should be in the England one-day side, my answer would be: YES
On extended leave...

He's nothing special, but gets the white ball to swing so is useful in the early overs of an innings. Given how poor England have been in ODI's there is no reason why he shouldn't be in that side as he can't do any worse, but for goodness sake don't let him anywhere near the Test side.

He's fine for the ODI side, but he has to bowl all of his overs at the begining of an innings whilst the ball is swinging, otherwise he just gets carted all over the ground.

I get twitchy when any English bowler bowls at any time during an innings. Dead
County Sim on extended break until I've got less work and more free time. When I have a specific date, I'll post it in the thread.

Well Anderson liked bowling with him and I thought they bowled well together just as well as Anderson and Broad.  I do think Lewis is a better ODI bowler than Sidebottom.

List A
172 matches 225 wickets at 26.92 econ 4.48 s/r 36.99 - Lewis
140 matches 143 wickets at 30.53 econ 4.30 s/r 42.55 - Sidebottom

I do think that Sidebottom is preferred because they want him in the Test side for his left arm variety and they prefer players to play in both forms of the game. They might want variety but Lewis is much better than Tremlett. Lewis was very unluckly to get his ankle injury when he did. Had he stayed in Australia and bowled I think he still would be in the squad. He has gone ahead of Mahmood and Plunkett and if there were an injury to one of the bowlers in Sri Lanka I think he will be the next bowler called up unless of course Moores is favouring Kirtley.

He has an excellent limited overs record but not a good ODI one

218 matches 328 wickets at 22.53 econ 4.60 s/r 29.35 limited overs
11 matches 9 wickets at 43.44 econ 5.25 s/r 61.00 ODIs

If Flintoff was injured I would have Anderson, Lewis, Plunkett and Broad as my 4 bowlers. Plunkett and Broad are very handy with the bat as well. We see other teams with 4 fast bowlers and a spinner but we always seem to play bits and pieces players.

I think Lewis' ODI economy of 4.18 shows he doesn't need to bowl at 90mph. Not many ODI bowlers have such a good economy. He does need to improve his fielding though. Smile
