    Posted: 09 November 2005 at 12:46am

I know we all like to speculate over who we'd pick if we were in charge of our national teams, so I thought I'd set up a competition between us whereby you pick a national team (or another one), select the players and try and win out over the 'season'. I'll try and explain what I mean:

I shall be using Syedur's cricket simulator http://cricksim.thesportcity.com/, which I used for my story, if anyone remembers that. This is a cricket simulator that uses player averages to determine each ball, and thus each match.

The cricket playing nations of the world will be divided into 2 leagues:

PREMIER DIVISION

Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies

SECOND DIVISION

Bangladesh, Kenya, Ireland, Scotland, Namibia, Bermuda, U.A.E, Canada

Each team will play the other in a best of 3 Test series (sorry no ODIs as the simulator isn't quite as good at them and it won't have all the new rules) and after all the games are played, there will be promotion and relegation - the bottom team in the Premier Division will be relegated and replaced by the winner of the Second division. The second from bottom team in the Premier Division will play-off with the runners up in the 2nd division (3 Tests again) and the winner plays in the Premier Division in the next season.

WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO:

- Post a reply stating your preferred team (and possibly second and third preferences as well in case someone gets there first). It's first come first served.

- I'll wait for as many slots to be filled before a set time (if all 16 teams aren't taken, I'll 'manage' them myself) then start the game.

- I know this wouldn't happen in real life but there will probably be a Test series every week or so. This is so things keep on moving at a nice rate.

- For each series, you will be required to pick a squad of up to 18 current or recently required (max. age = 40) players qualified to play for your nation. You are free to pick whomever you like, so long as they're not so obscure that they have no stats. For establised Test players I shall be using their Test averages for the purposes of the game, otherwise it will be First Class stats.

- There will be a number of injuries before each game, so this will require you to pick a squad and a team before each game. Provision can be made for injuries if you think you might not be around enough to check before each game.)

- Another thing you will be able to do before the game is to influence the state of the pitch - you can choose between excellent (paradise for batsmen), normal, and poor (great for bowlers) or random, provided you are the home team that is. The home manager decides the venues for the Tests, so if you want England v Australia in your back garden, you can have it!

Feel free to ask me any questions about this - I don't anticipate starting for a week or so whilst we get the teams filled. I hope I've made everything fairly clear, I think once we get going it should be self-explanatory. Feel free to PM me or add me to your MSN/Instant Messaging Client: jsp166@hotmail.co.uk

One more thing: Can you please PM me with a working email address as I shall set up a newsgroup to send scorecards, as they are virtually impossible to display correctly on these forums.

so do we have to download the cricket simulator from the URL you have given us?

do we play the test ourselves on the site?

do we choose current players or players from the entire history of cricket?
Regulation without integration leads to suicide.

No, you don't have to download anything but you can if you want just to see how it works. You provide teams, ground names and ground preferences.

No, I run the Tests.

I should have mentioned that you have to pick from current players. Players that have recently retired from Test cricket (Thorpe, for example) I'll allow you to pick, I should put an age limit of 40 but stats will be affected by age.

Presumably we select our starting XI after you tell us who's injured and the home captain tells us what kind of surface we've got JP.

Dead right

I anticipate that a 'turn' will go something like this:

1) You guys announce your squad (for a series)

2) Injuries are announced

3) The home team manager gives me their XI and pitch condition

4) The away team manager gives me his XI after seeing the pitch condition (but not necessarily the opposing team)

5) I simulate the games and give you the results

And we start over again...

Welcome back the bird - you didn't have to submit a squad rightaway but no problems with doing so anyway.

Done. No need to rush with teams, the sim won't start until I get enough teams 'filled.' But by all means, if you have a fair idea of your squad, go for it - the sooner I update the simulator, the quicker we get going.

Please don't try and pick dead people either.

A 39 year old Donald who hasn't played for 3 years or Terbrugge....interesting choice but do bear in mind that once a player is out of the game for a year or more his skills deteriorate rapidly and I'll be taking this into account.

A couple of queries about the format JP....

   1) Will each match constitute three tests , irrespective of the results in the 1st two ? ( i.e. a team leading 2-0)

   2) Players that are "injured" for a test , are they then okay for the following match?

   3) The grounds used - presumably three different grounds must be used for a series.

   4) Do we pick a 12th man at the start in case a player breaks down during a match?

1) Yes, each 'match' constitutes three Tests even if the third is a dead rubber. Three points per win, one per draw and a one point bonus for a series win so there's always something to play for.

2) Players that are injured will only be injured for one match, unless they're really unlucky and come up injured for the next one.

3) Yes, three different grounds, no matter where really but please state when picking your squad as the home team.

4) No need for 12th men, the game doesn't deal with them.

An important point JP - does the programme remember "current form" - that is the performances by the players selected ,adjudged by the programme?

If it does , then selection for subsequent matches could be important.
