When is Lara going to retire before he ruins his average. Surely there's another WI batsman that can get into double figures

I think he's retiring at the 2007 world cup.

The 83 he made against NZ proved that he could probably play another year. If he didn't make that 83, he should of retired immediately.

Yet another waste of space . this thread!

Lara has plenty of cricket left in him , cricket_mstr do you KNOW what constitutes a good cricketer , I have my doubts...

Ruins his average????

Honestly I am sure he cares damn all about his average. Whilst he thinks he can do a job for his side he should continue, simple as that.

The fact he scored a test double century not so long ago suggests he still can do it wouldn't you think?

Sorry friends, lara doesnt give a damn about his side and the only concern he has is his personal glory and to fulfill that he scores double or even triple hundreds usually in the last test match of an already lost series, that keeps him in the team and satisfies his  fans justification. I describe him as the most talented batsmen ever but also the most selfish in the history of cricket.

No that's not really fair. He has been burdened by the fact that through most of his career, if he doesn't score runs, his team loses. That would weigh heavy on the minds of pretty much any batsman in history.

Maybe you guys should check out the list from Wisden of the greatest innings and then judge whether he was really playing for himself all the time?

Lara was a great batsman but is in shocking form, he should step down and give some of the other WI batsman a go.

I'm all for players of that age still playing but not when they aren't making runs

Good cricketer, but that crickter has gone

There is no comparison to cricketing genious of lara, players like him are not born everyday, but his contribution to west indian cricket is very pathetic, infact his presence in the team stops the progress of young batsmen, and effects the rebuilding process harshly, The hard fact is windi cricket will prosper more in his absence than his presence.

There is no evidence to support that statement.

It strikes me as odd that Lara's critics lambast him because he scored incredibly heavily! Yes , he made 400 , yes he's made 501 and yes , he's carried the West Indies batting for as long as anyone can remember.

Now is that a crime? Lara has had to live with the fact that he was born 10 years too late. Imagine , you Lara critics , if he played in Clive Lloyd's side. His scoring feats would have been lauded AND the side would have won even more comprehensively than that great side did.

Lara scores his runs faster than any of that great side ever did - including the wonderful Sir Viv. Maybe , occasionally he did bat too long , but I have every sympathy with that , as his team was getting walloped all the time!

Give him credit for sticking with West Indies when they were really , really poor. He didn't NEED test cricket , he could have walked away and played anywhere in the world and on much more money.

He deserves respect and I truly believe he's been extremely proud to wear his country's cap in very trying circumstances.

We're lucky to have seen his like , he really was (and maybe still is) touched by genius.

As luck would have it today is the anniversary of this -

1999
The best innings of Brian Lara's life. Surpassing a 501, a 375, a 277 or a 213 takes some doing, but this humble 153 not out against Australia in Barbados was the stuff of genius. At one point West Indies had been 98 for 6 in the first innings, still 392 behind Australia, but Lara's performance - nobody else on either side made 40 in the second innings - led them to 311 for 9 and an unforgettable one-wicket victory

That Lara....self self self eh?

That truly was a fantastic knock Clobs and remember how good the Aussie attack was then and on a wearing pitch!!

For you detractors out there , name someone else who has come close to this stunning effort in a winning cause.

We haven't seen too many of those stunning efforts recently, I didn't get the pleasure of seeing Lara play in his good years but he has definately lost it and has to go

I'm not saying he wasn't a good cricketer, he needs to lift his game a lot if he wants to stay in the side, and the same goes for Chandpaul, we haen't seen anything from him

I am not in favour of lara retiring and I have never said that he is any less than the best, but seriously his presence is detracting young players from cementing their position and take responsibilities, how long will he win matches for his team when no body else around him scores? should this go on, Believe me he is no inspiration and thats the damaging part! Players like Inzimam, Ganguly and Steve waugh were way less gifted but inspirational. He has  a lot of cricket left and his loss to cricket would be imense but will work wonders for west indies whenever it would happen.

The recent news item that Lara wishes to coach young west indian batsmen will be  a great boost to west indian cricket, infact the problem is not with talent but stability at the top evry other series we have a guy who stands out and the next one he is not heard of and goes to oblivion. I hope the remaining time Lara contributes to west indies cricket rather than adding on to his impressive portfolio!
