Recently i've been trying to bowl a slower ball which isn't to obvious in my action and the batsmen picks it out straight away. Ive tried releasing out of the back of my hand but that doesnt work, but holding the ball across the seam and rolling my fingers across like an off cutter seems to work. I had 2 caught n bwld in nets. Wat i did was bowl three sort of short quick balls and then throw in the slower ball. My first competative game is on saturday and i hope it works then aswell!!! does anyone else find this action works???

I've experimented quite a bit with slower balls, I do use something similar to what you do, the offcutter style one but I use that more as a stock ball as I can get a fair bit of movement off the pitch with it but if I bowl a particularly fast delivery for me then i'll follow it up with a split finger slower ball, same action, different speed.

Cross-seam cutter is the one I have developed over the winter as well. Works in the nets but I haven't had chance to try it in anger yet. Glad to see someone else does the same thing.

I swing both ways - but only when I'm bowling!

The one i found most effective for me, eg not able to be read was slightly splaying the fingers you hold the seam with, and when i bowled the ball keeping my wrist cocked back, rather than flexing it forward when you release the ball like you do (or should do) when you usually bowl.

i dont bowl fast but when i did i used to bowl exactly the same just removing the thumb from the ball, naturally your hand twists and the ball comes out slower without the thumb behind it.

I love my slower ball. If i don't get wickets, you can always rely on it to do the buisness.
I'm 13 and my speed is about 70 mph, whereas i bowled my slower ball in the bowling machine and it was only 35mph, my coach he can't tell the difference in my action, does anyone else have this much luck with slower ball
I bowl it by splitting my fingers Edited by wolves f c1 - 23 May 2007 at 7:01pm |

I don't understand you. How do you bowl it in the bowling machine?

I think he means the sensor equipment to tell you how fast you're bowling.

hey wicket-taker
i am a fast bowler and usually my slower balls are my wicket taking delieverys, i usually roll my fingers across the ball for like a offspinner bit with the seam up, and i also bowl out of the back of my hand :) everynow and then i do bowl with the split fingers, but the ball tends to ocme out slow so i dont use it as much what i do is bowl 3 balls normally, slip in a yorker maybe, then a slower ball, i usually get the batsman to nick it :D |

uhhh for the most unreconisable slower ball you should change your grip just about when you are going to realse the ball so they have to pick it up in flight.

Surely the quicker ball would be a better variation!

Have to agree with wolves their. If you were to bowl a slower ball, it should only be a touch slower, just enough to get the batsmen playing early, all you would have to do is just slow your arm down a tiny fraction for that effect.
