Hi everyone

I've only played 3 innings and have picked up pitiful scores. I get a horrible wave of nerves walking in to bat and i become so defence minded. I fear losing my wicket and sods law has dictated that my over defence has caused me to get out cheaply all 3 times. In the nets i'm much more assured and relaxed.

Any tips for coping with nerves and generally gathering concentration just before walking in to bat? Does anybody else have a nerves problem

it's only natural to feel nervous when walking out to bat. I do. Just try and get a couple of good shots under your belt, get your feet moving and the runs will come. Try listening to music before you go out in bat.

one thing which is helpful is concentrate on one or two shots, mine are generally the cover drive and flick off the hips, as im trying to get into the position to drive the ball, so that if its their, i can go through with it safely, i.e. high elbow, lost of time, not to much power, if its a good ball leave or block, and then of its a bit short, rock back , and instead of risking the pull or cut, just wait until you can flick it off your hips,

basically best thing is try and simplify your technique when nervous, and minimise risk(such as boycott did)

boo ha ha!

What has helped me a lot is visualizing the whole process of padding up and walking out to bat, taking guard and getting ready to face the first ball.  I try & do this the night before, and the more detailed you can make your visualization the more comfortable you will feel.  Also a few deep breaths walking out to bat helps getting the nerves calm.

Evereyone gets the old nerves when going out to bat, I don't think I would play the game if I didn't. I find that as soon as I hit the first ball in the middle of the bat the nerves go. My main fear is getting a first baller, but touch wood not had one of those for a while.

Everyone gets nervous when they go out to bat surely? Even if you are be sure to try and show confident body language as you walk out - take purposeful strides, head up, shoulders back. Once you take guard step back and have a look around the field (remember, always look at the gaps, not the fielders!) then when you are ready you can face the first ball, so you are controlling the pace already. Also you may find that really positive calling helps you settle down - a good firm NO or YES as appropriate will burn off that nervous energy, and again also gives an air of confidence that your opponents will notice.

Well the only time i haven't felt nerves was yesterday. I came in at 6 in a 20 20 game. 2 balls left. 30 required. 12*!!!!! 2 big blows down the ground. I was told to go in and enjoy myself.
'What guard would you like batsmen?'
'Suprise me'
6 inchs outside leg i ended up.

I don't get nerves that often because I walk out thinking, all I'm here to do is score a few, the other guys will clear it up if I have a bad game. Unfortunately if you aren't an opener but one of the other guys then that won't really help.

everyone needs to take responsibility - slogger, if everyone thought like that, your team wouldn't do very well.

I feel under pressure because i'm an unproven batsmen who is expected to bat well. Especially when playing for my age group. I am a senior member of the team and have a good cricket brain despite my inexperience in matches. Playing for the mens team is much easier because theres no pressure, I'm a 15 year old facing far more experienced bowlers and if i get out then it was only expected.

You have to have hunger. It starts with self-confidence and you slowly build that up during the off-season and by the time your first net-session is on during the cricket season, you'll have a bagfull of confidence. Keep that confidence high and you will go into your first match well.

Strange enough, the one time I did have nerves was the time I made my highest score(5 off 11overs)!!
Try and relax, crack a joke or two (eg: see you in half a minute guys!), have a quick word with the batsman out and the remaining batsman, give a good healthy smile to the umpire and the wicket keeper, take a deep breath, and if you've still got nerves, you're one hell of a nervous guy.

sadly thats exactly what i did for my golden duck  Laughed about how i was moulding well to my tail-end role (i bat 3 for my age group) and got clean bowled. I was out of my pads faster then the guy who got out before me. Walked into the changing rooms and he was like "what the hell? TCA your in next!"

I shook off my nerves last innings with a 4 first ball, then a single. But then tried to score of my legs to a ball i should have pushed for 1 and got bowled. I felt good and then it all went wrong. I do get nerves even at the crease. But ive only ever been there long enough once to shake the all off.

You're doing it wrong. You never go in and bat and try and hit a four the first ball. Take a few overs to get your eye in.

I get nervous going out to bat, if i'm ok for the first ball it all just goes for me. I'm 14 and i bat 11 for a mens team (Opening bowler) And to be honest i feel more nervous at number 11, knowing if i lose my wicket we lose. So in my opinion, batting lower down is more nerve-racking.

every one has their own experience and ways to handle nerves, thing that does best for me is to scramble for a single as early as possible, becos you can have a great measure of field from nonstriking end, see the condition of the pitch , field positions, the other batsmen handling the bowling, so I usually get my first single on the first or the second ball and running for a single relaxes a lot of nerves for me. Infact even if i score a boundry that doesnt clear off many things, its the first single or double which takes off all the pressure.
so far so good!

Or you could just be lucky enough to come in at the non strikers end.

Or as one of my parteners once came in, he was facing a daemon bowler on a hattrick, you should've seen the look on his face, priceless.

I quite like coming in on a hat-trick - for one thing you can't do any worse than the guy before you plus they push the field up so much you always have the chance for runs straight away

True actually thats one of the most difficult time to come on creeze, even simple straight balls some how sneek through. I usually just bat a foot outside batting creeze facing a fast bowler on hatrick , it takes away bowled and LBW out of occasion, just try not to fish outside off, you may survive a hatrick ball.
so far so good!

If I feel nervous I make sure that I move my front foot as much as possible just so it gives the bowlers an impression of confidence. I leave as much as possible as well.

Oh by the way guys, I reverse swept a fast bowler on a hattrick from 2ft outside my crease today.

By the way, this was not a serious game, I'd never try it in a real game.

I hit a massive six in a practice match the other day. Charging down the wicket and cleared everyone by a mile. But i wouldn't try that either in a match.
