I am getting out with the new ball too often.. I am either edging the ball or not able to predict which way the ball is gonna swing. Will bats with thick edges help avoid me getting edges?

Bats with thick edges will not help you not get edges! It's about technique mate. Play late on the ball, wait for it to do it's thing and play at it.

Also if you play 50 overs or so, you can leave the new ball outside your stumps, and see which way/how much it swings. It might give you an indication.

and when playing for the ball outside offstump, go hard at the ball...if there little or no slips then you may get 4 if you edge it. But obviously try and time it first!

Well you'd think a team with a new ball would have at least a couple in, but if you edge it well enough and it gets through it annoys the slip fielders no end.

Well I've noticed in club cricket just the one slip for the first few overs seems to be the trend. As soon as runs are being scored at a quick rate, that slip is put straight to deep something or other.

Make sure you get your feet moving early doors. Get used to leaving the ball when outside your off stump and even when playing defensive look to be positive.

I think so, unless you are one of those people that believe you can turn an apple into an orange. My point being not everyone can be an opening batsman, some are just more suited to coming in later when the ball dosen't move as much.

Maybe you could also try getting outside the line of the ball when its moving around because when you do, you're not going to edge it and if the ball swings like an outswinger the bat will already be there because its outside the line of the ball.

Yes, but the topic here is new ball help though. I like the idea of getting outside the ball to try and get over the swing although is this not going to be harder to actually score runs? |

Well, I think it has to do with the skill of the batsman and how you play at it once you're outside the line of the ball.

I bat 3 and because we have a slogger at number 1 i am effectively an opening batsmen...and i hate it. But its my job so i just get on with it.

Funny enough, I have the opposite problem! I'm an opener too and see off the new ball most of the time (except for the odd cracker/lapse of concentration) but this season I have not been able to go on. Anyway, the trick is to leave leave leave! Loose ones will come: if there's anything short or, particularly, full, go at it hard, as hard as you can manage if it's wide! The hard new ball will absolutely ping off any kind of contact, top edges over slip are a staple shot for the opener! It's those length balls that require your 100% concentration. hope this helps! |

yeah leaving is very good, but you need to find the best shots that you play, for me its the cover and straight drives, and pulling, you need to make sure that you practice these shots that even if the 1st ball is in the slot, you can nail it for 4, but i struggle to get my back foot back and across so i dont play the cut or back foot drives early doors, simply leave them, and becuase my footwork takes a while to get going, and your wrists arent too supple to start with, i dont play the leg glance hope this helps |

In twenty over format there isn't enough time to leave really. I find that in the first few overs you should only look for 1s and 2s. They can be your sighters. After than you just have to see it and hit it.

When opening the batting against a new ball you should look to play in the 'V' as it is known,play with the full face of the bat and hit through the line,play the ball late as possible because you could get leading edges or miss-time the ball.
