Pakistan - already have a better test player in Umar Akmal if he is not playing i doubt Yuvraj will have any chance. BD - any player from top 6 can get in their team even Harbhajan would bat at no.3 for them. SL - They already have a decent batting lineup they really dont need someone like Yuvraj. Zim - He will get in their team but the main problem is they dont play too many test matches. WI - The only real team that needs him. Edited by mystery - 11 December 2011 at 7:10am |

I disagree on the WI mystery, Gayle, Barath, Sarwan, Darren Bravo, Chanderpaul, and Samuels are good top 6 players, they don't need Yuvraj, even if Gayle and Sarwan are out of favor, I think Simmons and Kirk Edwards have potential to be better.

Barring few players in the other teams that you guys are mentioning others would not even get a look in if they were in India Test Squad.
Yes there are good players in the teams, but imo the only players would would make into team ahead of Yuvraj (for only spot) are Younis khan, Sanga, Jaya, Samaraweera, Gayle, Sarwan, Chanders, Jr Bravo,Taylor(Zim) and few more.
Not only Yuvraj, but even Raina would easily make into teams other than ENG,AUS,SA for sure.

I don't rate Yuvraj so much in the longer format, but I still think WI would play him if he was available to them. A little bit far-fetched to claim all those batsmen are better than Yuvraj. Gayle himself barely averages 40 in tests, albeit he opens the batting.

Regarding Umer Akmal , I really find it strange that he could not make spot his own even in Pakistan batting lineup. In future he sure will do, he is a good talent to miss out.
Indian bowling is always criticised by many, infact to an extent saying that Indian bowling deficienies is covered up by strong batting lineup, but when it comes to Yuvraj and Raina who have been battling for lone spot, that aspect is completely forgotten that they are in tremendous pressure which no other batsman in other Test squad face.

Fact that Raina and Yuvraj are criticised show good the other batsmen are. Everyone is comparing them to Sachin and co. Fact is, Raina is not test standard, while Yuvraj is borderline. I think India has much more depth outside those two, but for some reason they stick to them. India DEFINITELY has better batsmen, Pujara, Badrinath, Virat Kohli, etc.

Pujara,Badrinath and Kohli are better but they suit at Dravid's spot rather than #6 slot.Indian selector have been witty , they know whom to try at what spot.
Back to the topic, Aussies well set with 72/0, Warner will make the spot his won ... that's a real danger sign for India in near future

Interesting that you compare Warner with Sehwag. Anyone who has watched Warner's innings will not that he did not play a single unorthodox shot, left the good bowls and was superb down the ground. He actually had all the attributes for a good test batsman and his selection I think is justified. He is making runs in first class cricket, he has a solid technique, he handles pressure well and he's still 25. I like his style and if he became anything like Sehwag then the future of world cricket is quite exciting! He's an excellent field and part time leggie to boot and I think he has some leadership traits. I hope he comes off and does well, kind of guy you want in the side and he has a HUGE support base from young Aussies because of his exploits in T20.

Sam, Yuvraj will walk into the West Indies team, Samuels cannot tie Yuvraj's shoes. Sarwan is only a good test player in the West Indies anyway. He won't replace Gayle as they play different roles. Can't replace Shiv though, that's the bad man!!

What a win by NZ
Before the series I expected them to draw it , but not today morning when I woke up.It was 2-0 written all over.Great bowling by NZ to come back 1-1.
Warner , what a knock he almost single handedly won the game for Aussies... this is exactly what I did not want. Hughes being dropped and very aggressive Warner taking one of openers slot.Though Warner is one of my fav player, I wanted that to happen post India tour.Indian seamers start planning out some strategy against him.

A tremendous advert yet again for test cricket and yet again Australia come up short in a tight finish. Warner played beautifully but couldn't find another who wanted to stick around and so the series ends in yet another frustrating 1-1 draw. Credit to the NZ seamers , to get Clarke and Hussey for blobs was unexpected and my prediction about Ponting was way off the mark.
Duncan Fletcher will have taken it all in and India can go over there and give it a real go. Watson and Marsh will return , so Hughes could well be a casualty. Warner's ton might just be the catalyst that sees Watson dropped down the order with Marsh opening with Warner. Well done New Zealand , after a shocking 1st day you showed commendable spirit and certainly proved me wrong! |

I think Khwaja and Hughes will both go. Terrific stuff from NZL. Everyone seems to have the belief to beat the Aussies now. Aussie shave a problem to play the swinging ball and that has been witnessed at least 5 times in a year and a half. Should Australia lose the home series against the Indians - we may see a complete overhaul of the middle order as well with the likes of Ferguson etc replacing punter and Huss.

The quality of the Test matches we have witnessed in the last month or so has just been unbelievable. 47 all out Test, chased over 300 with 2 wickets left, match drawn with scores level and 1 wicket left and now a win by 7 runs. Hopefully, this will show people that Test cricket is well and alive and will inspire more people to attend the matches.
Hats off to NZL. I never saw that coming and it was some wonderful bowling by Bracewell in particular. I didn't expect Warner to play that well either so he's certainly made a very strong case for himself to play against India. Marsh, Warner, Ponting, Clarke, Hussey, Watson, Haddin, Siddle, Pattinson, Harris and Lyon w/ Khawaja as back-up batsman should be the side selected I should think. They will want Watson to bowl a lot against India so I guess they will move him down to preserve him and with Warner playing that well, it makes their decision easier. I don't know if Marsh wants to open or play at 3 though. On the basis of today's play, India may fancy their chances but I still think India's bowling is far too weak and will get exploited. |

By the way, with that LBW that was reversed when Nigel Long gave Nathan Lyon out with 25 or so runs needed, did anyone else think the DRS had the ball misaligned? All the slow-mo replays showed the ball pitching well in line with the 3 stumps and even the contact with leg stump yet when it went to DRS, the whole thing seemed to shift a few inches to the right so that it pitched outside leg. It would probably still have gone down with the angle but it seemed as if the replays and DRS contradicted each other with regard to where the ball pitched. Or maybe my eyes have just gone.

It's really heart breaking at the moment being an Aussie fan, after the first test against SA and now this. Really tough to deal with, because in both matches we were in winning positions and lost because of RUBBISH batting against normal medium pace bowler with a touch of seam and swing movement. It's not good enough. We learnt some lessons from Ashes 2010, but all those lessons were learnt by the bowlers and I also think the selectors, who have done a much better job of late.
Some heads will be chopped. Marsh and Watson will both come in, and Hughes and Khawaja will make way for them. Ponting, Haddin and Hussey are next to go when there are adequate replacements. |

Dropping Hughes is a no-brainier really. With Marsh and Watson both back - Khwaja won't find a place weither.

Watson will be a very welcome inclusion, and his consistency is SORELY missed.
Matthew Wade has been in top form for Victoria, he's a fine batsman, albeit somewhat unorthodox, but more than good enough for no. 7. His keeping is adequate, no real demons in the wicket or a Shane Warne to contend with. Marsh's consistency also will be more than useful for this ailing batting line up and I am looking forward to his comeback. This is the side I'd go for: 1. Warner 2. Watson 3. Marsh 4. Ponting (this might be his last series) 5. Clarke* 6. Hussey (2 failed series in a row after a fantastic SL series... on his last chance) 7. Wade (although Haddin will probably get picked) 8. Harris 9. Cummins 10. Pattinson 11. Lyon 12th Man: Siddle |

Watson will open, Aussies will not bat him at 7 or 5. He and Warner will open, Marsh will bat at 3 and Ponting and the rest will follow. If Ponting does play against India and fail, it will be his last series for Australia. Hussey should have a few more chances left, after all, he has saved Aussies some big disgrace lately. The selectors will have that in their heads.

sensational win for the Kiwis, right before the start of the series I had said that I won't be surprised by a 1-1 result and I am not surprised. This was expected, AUS had their weak links and NZL had some good young players in their ranks, Bracewell, I've said before has been impressive. It really is wonderful to see NZL win this match! Super stuff!
You missed that sensational NZL v ZIM match in the list BP!

Yeah sam, that one too
![]() They need to stop letting the Aussie public select the man of the match. Bracewell should have got it and even Warner was looking a bit sheepish up there because he knew Bracewell was the deserved MoM. Also, shouldn't MoM be selected at the end of the match when the outcome/final performances can be evaluated properly. They were letting the Australian public vote on it when AUS were 159/2, ofc it was going to tilted in favour of Warner. I know it's not a big thing but I just don't know why they want to increase viewer involvement to the point where biased decisions influence awards. Just let them vote on that other nonsense like when the next wicket will fall or how many runs the batsman will make etc. The MoM decision shouldn't be in the hands of a biased audience when the game is not even completed. |

MOM performance is always tilted in favour of the batsman/winning side. Saw ponting make a 59 once, Harvey made 39 and took 3 wickets. Ponting still got the award. There are many other occassions like this.

Fair coments Daz , Australia were rubbish 1st time around , but both sides bowled well using the conditions nicely. I've a feeling that if the New Zealanders showed the same application against the rest of the world's cricketing nations as they do against their arch rivals I think their record would be so much better. Again though I have to say a two test series is a farce and everyone's left up in the air. Australia want to set the record straight and New Zealand would be desparate to actually win a series in Australia.
And remember , that performance without Vettori! |
