Don't you love this site - cricket and genealogy combined!!

My three were Tremletts , Headleys and Chappells WG  , I didn't know about the Khans !  Id' guess that grandad Khan played for India whilst the young 'un played for Pakistan !

I have Richardson's fine book on the bodyline series - wonderful read , I'll put something on the Cricket Book Thread next week after I've had a quick browse - haven't read it since the Botham days methinks!

   Good fun this thread !

Which prolific test batsman scored his maiden ODI century on the penultimate game of his 108 matches (no real surprise when you think how he started playing this version of the game)?

Who is the oldest man to have made an international ODI hundred?

Only two test matches have been completed without any batsman scoring more than 50 - which might they be?

The 1981 Edbaston Ashes Test didn't produce a 50 WG !!  Beefy took that 5-1 to win it for England !!

Very emotional match that was mate - his origin home ground in Port Elizabeth - there wasn't a dry eye in the country when he went past 3 figures. Simply one of the finest batsman (and man) to ever take up the game.

That would have been my guess, as he would have taken part in the first ODI, which almost came about by accident.

JP is off taking a course on reading forum posts correctly.

I remember reading this one in a Wisden book some years ago.

India vs NZ in Nz Dec 2002. Both teams got dismissed for under a 100 in their first innings on a green juicy wicket! The seconds innings wasn't that better either with scores of 160 and under!

Clues:

The pre-eminent (with Ranji) batsman of his generation.

He held the world long jump record for 21 years, so adept was he at leaping from a standing start - his party piece was to jump backwards onto a hearth mantlepiece or shelf.

Hiltler modelled his Youth Movement in Germany on the dual sporting and academic prowess of this man.

At 70 he decided to come out of retirement and conquer the world of horse racing, such was his reputation as a sporting all-rounder the press speculated if he would make his debut as trainer, jockey or horse!

Oh, and he was once asked to take the vacant position of King of Albania!

Here's another one for you...........

Who is the only test player to have made identical centuries in both innings of a test match?

(don't ask me how I know, but it is to do with teaching probability)

Another one from teaching probability ...............

What is the most expensive drop (dropped catch) in first class cricket?

(cricket and darts, great for teaching maths)

I've read about this one, happened several decades ago the player scored just a little over 100. If only I could remember who it was. I will go with Graham Yallop.

What's the probability that I have no idea what I am talking about and is way off?

The most expensive drop was the Durham wicket-keeper who dropped Brian Lara early on in his innings of 501.

Can't remember his name, but the drop was at 18 or thereabouts, so the missed chance cost a mere 479 runs or so.

Back on form JP, the hapless Chris Scott did watch Lara add 483 runs to the 18 he was on when he dropped him!!

Victor Fuller Eberle never appeared in first-class cricket, although he was a useful rugby player. His claim to fame is to have dropped probably the most expensive catch in cricket history: as the youngest player (at 11) in a junior house match at Bristol's Clifton College in June 1899, he dropped the 13-year-old AEJ Collins, who went on to score 628 not out, the highest score known in any form of organised cricket. The 1975 Wisden carried a brief obituary of Eberle, which says he dropped Collins at 20, so his lapse cost 608 runs.
