The Green Machine begin their tour of the Caribbean in a few days time, both WI and PAK have given a new look to their squads, several new comers for WI for the T20 game while PAK have dropped Kamran Akmal and Abdul Razzaq and have rested Younus Khan and Umer Gul.

Mohammed Salman replaces Kamran, and there are places for Salahuddin a middle order batsmen and Sadaf Hussain, a left arm fast bowler, Hammad Azam, the allrounder, also gets a look in and replaces Razzaq.

This is the first of two big series that WI will be hosting, they clash against world champions India right after this series (and barely 6 days after the IPL ends, poor Indian players and right after the WI tour they head off to ENG for another long series!!!!) for PAK too this series is only the start of another long season, they have a couple of ODI's against IRE after this followed by a Tour to Zimbabwe and then a home series against SLN which might eventually be played at a neutral venue.

So time for teams to start building a team for the future.

Glad to see Akmal dropped - the opposite feeling for seeing Razzaq out. Ahemd Shehzad continues to be in the team. Malik continues to be out - that is because - the team is led by Afridi - who does not want many all rounders around him in the team. As long as he leads - we will see less of Razzaq and probably wont ever see Malik

Razzaq will never perform when he doesn't get to bowl his full quota of overs... or bat in the top 6. Pretty pathetic utilisation of such a talented player. Really he's wasted, just like Saqlain was. Shame on you Pakistan management...

I absolutely share your view mate. They dropped Saqlain because Shoaib Malik was making his way in the team. they have dropped Razzaq because the skipper thinks hismelf of an all rounder and comes to bat before Razzaq - and never utilizes Razzaq in the bowling department either - and then he gets dropped for under performance. Typical of Pakistani selection though - not surprised.

Shame on Pak management indeed because once again they have made some very poor decisions. However, Kamran being dropped is the right decision, in fact had he been in any other team Kamran would have been dropped long long time ago.

I do agree with Zuhair that Afridi is not very keen on having Malik and Razzaq in the team and it will be difficult to see them in the line up as long as this management is in charge.

Shahzad though is a terrific young talent and I think it is just a matter of time before he comes good, he is still very young and I think once you identify a talent you need to back him and I do see a lot of potential in Shahzad. Hammad Azam too is a very fine inclusion in the side, PAK are perhaps already thinking long term and if these youngsters can come good it will be great for PAK cricket.

Not too sure how Usman Qadir is progressing, I was expecting to see him too in the near future.

No Sam, it's a shame that they didn't drop Kamran 2 years ago... not just now! Really, it's well overdue, substandard cricketers have no place in test cricket. They dilute the value of the game, just like the inclusion of BD in the test arena.
Pakistan will be aching over the fact that they lost potentially two of the best fast bowlers in the world, in Asif and Amir. I'm afraid, despite the pool of talent in Pakistan, that those two guys are very difficult to replace. Particularly Amir, who had potential to be the next Wasim with bat and ball (as many commenatators say). While Asif was certainly a McGrath/Pollock-esque bowler - another rare player.
No Asif, no Amir, no Butt (not that I rated him that much)... Younis and Misbah are just lazy... Yousuf is underused and well we've seen what they have done to Razzaq (and Saqlain before him).

Pakistan commit suicide every single day with their management and selections - they waste so much damn talent everyday. Pakistan SHOULD consistently be a top 3 team in the world...

T20: WI side without Gayle,Pollard,Sr Bravo and Chanders looks very weak for T20I. Expect Junior Bravo to put match winning innings every match on this tour. When will WI play their best XI. I am frustrated with thier politics or whatever. If WI play their best 11 (Injured / unavailable lot), they are a tough side to beat.

Keeping my fingers crossed and hope that debutants prove me wrong. Russel, Fletcher and Simmons are good prospects.

Pak side: They have a good team, Asad and Umer augers well for Pakistan's future.Wahab is an excellent bowler who bowls at 140s and has good yorkers and moves the ball well. The only question is can they put their head down and play decent cricketing shots on WI pitches.

I do share your views Mikey, those three banned players cannot be replaced but then PAK have to move on, they do not have any other option. as Raj has said, Umer Akmal, Asad and Wahab have impressed a lot and they also have Junaid Khan and Hammad Azam, who I think are very very good prospects.

PAK do need a strong management and intelligent captain and coach which unfortunately they do not have at the moment. I hope they think long tern like RSA and SLN and appoint a young captain sometime soon, again it hurts me so much because Butt was the perfect choice, as of now I cannot see anyone being able to take over the leadership role from Afridi.

Right on the money mate! Strong management and an intelligent captain. Pakistan just reached a world cup semi-final - they beat the world champions on the path to getting there too in the 1st round of matches. They are a very talented side... that's fact. They have the 2nd largest population of test playing sides and a very strong following , cricket's very popular in Pakistan. They have the culture for cricket and they are running out of excuses for their inconsistency.

Both teams got a few things to ponder with about team selections. PAK team looking in a better position, and will take a lot of heart out of their WC performance.

Razzaq exclusion did come as a surprise for me too. But like Zuhair had said nothing supposed to be unexpected of the PAK selection anymore.

I am not that worried about the bowing stocks - we have plenty to throw in in the fast bowling department. The spin department is fairly covered at the moment as well. Watch out for Junaid Khan - pity that the originally picked Aizaz Cheema got injured - he is a pretty fine seamer too. Yes, not easy to replace Amir - but we will still do reasonably without him and Pakistan has in fact accepted that and moved on with Amir and Asif's absence - there is no use regretting the loss of cheaters in my view.

there are a few youngsters in the batting area that are coming up - so I see the future in good shape. Just hope they maintain the blend of youth and experience. I would not mind losing a series or two with a new look side. But seriously, Pakistan need to look beyond Afridi for leadership.

Its really exciting to watch the Pakistan team when they have a new fast bowler on the block. How's the new guy replacing Aizaz Cheema. Can't wait to watch Junaid Khan, heard/read a lot about him.

No matter what Pakistan always seems to be able to unearth new fresh luring fast-bowling talents. Envious from across the border.

Sadaf Hussain is a bright prospect too - and already has the inswinger - a rarity for left arm pacers at such young age. He needs to work up at his pace. But Aizaz Cheema would have been much better for the mix of the bowling unit - as Wahab Junaid and Sadaf are all similar type of bowlers - but I am excited for the new age of Pakistan fast bowlers. Bring it on.

First thing that needs to be done is an anti corruption crack down, followed by classes for ALL Pakistan players with regard to corruption, match fixing and the like so as to education them to NOT get into such criminal behaviour. If only they took such preventative action with Amir and Asif.

It is not much about education Mikey - I mean you don't have to be that highly educated or something to know taking money to under-perform is blatant cheating. Yes, educating them on how t interact with people around and the dos and donts is required - yet what these guys did was horrible and nothing that the education could have changed.

Yes zuhair, from what I have seen I am impressed with Azhar Ali and Shafiq (He should be in tests if not already) .These 2 youngesters seem to have a solid technique and temperment for tests.

They might need some time to settle down and know their roles and undertand their game at international level,  but once they do in test pakistan will have a good middle order for future in Shafiq-Azhar Ali-U Akmal.

It is the opening they will have to think. F Alam scored some 160 + as opener, I really don't know why he is not there in tests?

Azeem Ghumman is another good young prospect I have heard.

I think PAK as a team need to be strong, I absolutely agree that they need to look beyond Afridi for leadership and it could be given to a younger player with a sharp mind and good temperament much like Dhoni, a street smart cricketer.

PAK as a team need to be strong, there is absolutely no consolation in reaching the Semis or losing a close series, that time is gone, they have been rebuilding since ages, now is the the time to win... the team has a good mix of youth and experience and the youngsters have got loads of talent, that needs to come out now.

I think PAK should aim to be the No.1 team in tests and ODI's in the next 2 years and I do not see any reason why it cannot be done.

They need to be realistic instead of being overly optimistic. They won't be the number one team anytime soon - but they will be competitive enough methinks. We should keep in mind we do not get to play home matches, which is a big downside and affects the outcomes to some degree. But I also think, it may actually be a good thing as the younger players play all their cricket abroad - making them tougher and stronger and whenever cricket comes back to Pakistan - I expect them to shine.

Fawad Alam was again a case of poor handling - he should have been picked in the test squad, but instead they picked him for the shorter versions which is not his game. But he will surely be back. Fawad, Umar, Azhar and Asad are good enough players to holed the middle order. I am optimistic about Pakistan cricket in the longer run - I will take a year of struggle for that.

Gosh Fawad Alam was a ridiculous selection. Genuinely talented batsman and decent left arm spinner left out of the test side... for who? Hafeez? Wow.

Actually playing abroad is much better option for Pakistan.Pakistan strength is bowling , so they can acutally maximise it.However downside is the batting might suffer.

Well the thing is Malhotra, the kids in Pakistan practice in their own conditions, so home conditions and a home crowd will always be an advantage. It's fair enough however that tests are not being played in Pakistan at this point in time, but hopefully things will go back to normal in time.

Pakistan have an abundance of talent, just like their Indian neighbours. India certainly sorted out a lot its issues with regard to selection and management, which is a lot more shrewd than it used to be. Although I can't say I'm a fan of the BCCI.

I'm not being overly optimistic Zuhair, at the moment Pak have a very good mix of youth and experience and even by 2015 they will have a very good combination of young and experienced players, there are a lot of promising youngsters coming through and the fact that PAK have reached the SF's or better of the last 5 ICC events is an evidence of the talent PAK have... all this despite going from one controversy to another and losing some of their best players.

2007 WT20 - Runners up
2009 WT20 - Winners
2009 CT - SF's
2010 WT20 - SF's
2011 WC - SF's

Looking at the above performances, There is no reason why this team cannot be the best team in the world in 2 years time, what were SLN in 1994 and what were SLN in 1996? I mean it doesn't take that much time to transform, PAK need to change their mindset and look to win every time they go out to play. If I hear anything like a SF's is what we are aiming for, I'd be disappointed.

Dude, SRL were not the best team in 1996 - they were not even the second best. They did win the World Cup though. I am not saying Pakistan will go further downhill from here - I also see an improvement - but I want a steady progress and with the talent pool that we have here - we can achieve it - if only the PCB starts functioning in a sane manner and the Board is corruption free.

I agree with sam's above comments. There's no reason why Pakistan can't be at the fray of things for the top spot straight away, atleast in ODI ( would take longer to reach the summit in Tests).  Like sam's pointed out they done very well in the ICC events over the past few years, now all they need is to be consitent through out , easier said than done. But first they need a major change in the set-up from a coach who could bring in fresh idea's and build the confidence a rapport of the players to a Captain who could be in charge for all three formats of the game ( I do not dislike Afridi though) and more importantly the management and selectors.

SL had Whatmore and Arjuna to thank for that incomprehensible rise. The Wright-Ganguly combination worked wonders for Indian cricket. Time for Pakistan to get their dream duo.

The dream duo was Woolmer and Inzi and Pakistan reached number 2 in the world under them. We do need a good management set up and certainly a better captain.

Yes Woomler/Inzi was a good combo, but I don't think they quite managed to reach number 2, atleast not according to the ICC team rankings, which had come about in 2002. Now the Woomler/Inzi Partnership dint start before that did it. They never reached No.2 since ICC team rankings came to pass.

I think they did reach number 2 somewhere in 2005 if my memory serves me right. Regardless of that, that was a fine fine combination and I hope we again find a decent coach and a good captain like those two.

They were number three for most part of 2004 - so I think at some stage they must have got to the number two spot only to lose it shortly. Because that is what I recall that we did reach number 2.
