People often compare players with other players, what i want to do is ask people to name 6 players from their counteries who have either gave something to that country in the cricketing sense or even raised the profile for their country. Please include reasons why you picked each of the 6 players. As a pak fan these are mine.
1. Imran Khan: Put pakistan on the world map with his on and off field antics, lead pak to first ever World Cup and was Pak's first ever great All rounder and Captain, also introduced Waqar and inzy to Intnational cricket.
2. Javed Miandad: One of the finest batsman the world has ever seen, socred heavily all around the world and was a competitive player with a never say die attitude. He influenced many young players like yousaf, Basit and misbah. Played a part in pak winning the world cup.
3 .Abdul Qadir, a great spinner, i chose him becuase he revived leg spin and influenced young players in pak who tried to emmulate him, two of these being mushy and Kaneria.
4. Inzama Ul haq, one of the greatest batsman of the modern age and possibly the best from pak, played mostly under pressure and won matches for pak single handedly at times. nearly 20,000 international runs and made a young pak team a fighting unit and has turned into a fine leader.Played a part in pak winning the world cup. Especially his innings against New zealand in the semi final.
5. Wasim Akram, one of the best fast bowlers ever, definatly the best left armer by a mile, Combined conventional swing and reverse to become the most difficult to play. Had a successful stint as a captain, won many matches for pak and was a true legend of cricket with ball and bat. Played a part in pak winning the world cup.
6. Waqar Younis: The best reverse swing bowler ever to play cricket, his skill not only got pak fans talking but he became a house hold name for cricket fans all over the world. Speed, Skill and swing none could match him, apart from wasim. He was one of the finest bowlers to take the field.

1. Donald Bradman: Our best batsman to play the game and probably the best to play the game all together.
2. Stephen Waugh Started as a 21 year old in the mid 80's and had a rough start to his career. As he developed he became one of the best batsmen in the game and scored over 10,000 test runs. 3. Shane Warne Came into the team in 1991 but took a little more to make a real impact. The best spinner of all time and revived the art of leg spin in a time where it was basically dead. 4. Allan Border Was in the Australia team when the chips were down especially when he took over the captaincy in the mid 80's. He was influencial cricketer scoring over 10,000 test runs and put this country back on the map after destroying England in the 1989 ashes. 5. Denis Lillee For his time and still today is one of the best fast bowlers to walk onto the field. He is still an inspiration to all Australian fast bowlers. 6. Glenn McGrath Was known as the kid from out west when he started and known for his unbelevaible accuracy. Over his career he taunted batsmen from everywhere with his impeccible line and length. |

1. Don Bradman - Greatest ever batsman produced by Australia, who could score at a quick rate and make 300 runs in a single day's play.
2. Steve Waugh - Started off and the late 80s and could bowl abit, was part of the side that regained the ashes. 3. Glenn McGrath - Started off as a reject who was always rejected by his teammates in his junior cricket teams, and couldn't even get a bowl for his Under 16s side, then moved to Sydney to play Grade Cricket, until Doug Walters noticed his talent, and he emerged from there on. He has a wonderful Line & Length to trouble even the great batsman. 4. Shane Warne - Changed the game with his Leg Spin bowling, but started off with terrible figures of 1/152 and then a couple of years later, produced figures of 3/0 vs Sri Lanka to cause one of the greatest collapses in test cricket. Australia went on to win that match. From his first delivery in the ashes, he's troubled almost every english batsman. 5. Bill O'Reilly - Introduced bowling Leg Spin at medium pace, and Bradman said he was the best he's faced. 6. Adam Gilchrist - The greatest wicketkeeper-batsman to play for Australia, and the greatest wicketkeeper-batsman the world has ever seen. Makes batting look so easy, and can hit the ball a long way. |

"His classical hits down the ground, met with a checked drive, were Tendulkar at his best. It was though he had a new lease of life." - Sachin Tendulkar's return to cricket with a 91-Ball century.

West Indies
Frank Worrell - One of the greatest gents to have played the game. Played the game in a clean spirit and united the West Indians countries together. He's done wonders for them and a great bat too.
Malcol Marshall - The greatest pacer to ever play the game. Had pace, accuracy and swing and performed on anykind of tracks. Caused pain all over the world and probably one that everyone wants to be like.
Sobers - The greatest all-rounder to play the game. Simply could have done anything. A fine slipper and one that always comes to head is that wicked catch at leg gully low to the ground. Superb reaction and a magnificent striker of the cricket ball. First man to launch all six balls in first class cricket for 6 runs. He's so great that I've heard of him as young as I could have ever remembered.
Clive Lloyd - Captained the most successful side the windies ever had and one of the greatest the world has seen. A fantastic bat too! India won't forget him at all!
Brian Lara - He's loved all over the caribbean! One of the finest lefties to have ever played the game. One of the greatest players ever of spin bowling!!

I was in a bit of a hurry cause I was doing a project for school so I justed posted as far as I could go. I was gonna name one more but you've done it for me. VIV is by far the most destructive batter I have known. Took on any bowler and intimidated them. Very powerful hitting!!!

Being an Indian fan I'll name some. I'm sure to miss a few as usual but I'll try my best. By the way I like the way you told us to put six playes instead of five. Five is very normal. Its nice to have a different number for once. Was it because you had six Pakistanis in mind?
India: 1.Sachin Tendulkar: I think he has got to be one of India's greatest batsman if not the greatest. He has done so much for us and the world. Setting records, hardwork, talent etc... He came into the team with the likes of Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and the rest of the lot and still proved himself well. Although captaincy may have failed him, it will remain as one of the few failures he had during his career. 2.Sunil Gavaskar: Named the batsman of the century for India (or the whole world, can't remember) recently and I can't find a better choice than him. Told the world what a batsman is and the amount he has done for cricket will always be remembered throughout thw world. He helped bring the team together when they weren't the best and is one of the reasons Indian cricket is today. 3.Kapil Dev: Undoubtedly the greatest all-rounder to have ever played for India. Helped us win the World Cup when it wasn't expected. Was a terrific bowler and a very useful batsman. The day when he was accused of a match-fixing scandal was a sad day in cricketing history according to me. 4.Anil Kumble: Now what a bowler he is. Inspite of the likes of Warne and Murlitaran, he was still able to shine and is feared by every batsman in the world because of his unexpected googly, quick top-spinner, and could get any batsman, be it Ponting or Lara, of their guard and is India's most successful bowler by far. 5.Rahul Dravid: There may have been many great batsman like Azahruddin and Ganguly that India has produced but one batsman who changed the face of Indian cricket would be Rahul Dravid. With his unique style of batting, people would have thought that he won't fit in the quick styled matches like ODIs and Pro20, but he proved the critics wrong and is now one of the greatest batsman in the world. One of the few Indians to hit a century in both innings and make a hundred in every country. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest batsman to have played the game. 6.Javagal Srinath: Many people would have put a different player on this position because they tend to forget Srinath, India's most successful fast-bowler. He alone formed India's pace attack, and although he wasn't very quick, caused a lot of problems for many batsmen. Can take quick wickets and is very useful at the tail most of the time and rarely fails India when it comes to winning a game with his good bowling. I would love to put more, but I was only allowed six. Edited by DRAVID FAN - 10 January 2007 at 1:06am |
