I V A Richards 189* v England at Old Trafford - not just for the runs but the match situation.
He came in at 11 for 2 and watched the Windies subside to 102 for 7,
then 166 for 9 but somehow propelled them to 272 for 9 at the close.

what abt kapil dev's 175. i haven't seen it and no one ever will see it( because no one has the coverage of that match) but according to the situation he came in i think it might be one of the greatest inns. sledger/clobber might be able to tell us more on it.

There are two ways of looking at this one in my opinion - he came in at
9 for 4 so he was under great pressure which makes his innings remarkable,
as does scoring 175* out of 266.
Conversely of course people will point out that it was only against Zimbabwe.

Pontings Innings in the 2003 World Cup Final. (can't remember any oldies )
The way he just unleashed the fury soon after he made his half-century was something else. His last 94 runs came from just 59 balls, a truly magnificent display of strokeplay, and big hitting. I don't think Harbhajan will have very good memories of that match.

i am going to have to say Gibbs 175, as this is one of the only big innings ive seen live, followed by pontings in the same match, but you cant take anything from smith either!
i would also rate kluseners in the semi final of 99 world cup, as sa could have lost that match without his innings!

The best I have seenis Hashan Tillekaratne's 100 off 100 balls in Sharjah aginst WI. WI scores 333, with Lara scoring 169. With score 103 for 5 Hashan leashed out an astonishing attack on West Indies fielders by the way of his running between wickets. He wouls have easily beaten Bevan, de Villiers or Jonty for that matter on that day. He was electric on the pitch. SL lost by 4 runs, but it was a memorable match, and that stated SL's up rise to the world cup in 1996

I think it was Kapil Dev's 175. Zimbabwe was a good team that time. Better than now. the score was 44/7 and he took it too 266/9.
I.V.A Richards 189 is also a really amazingly amazing one.
HH Gibbs's 175 at the Wanderers was very good.
S Jayasuriya's 189 was one of the best.
Inzamam's 100 two years ago against India. The ODI series before Sehwag's and Dravid 309 and 270 respectbly. ery fine knock though they lost.
Overall I would say I was Kapil Dev's because if India lost that match they would have been out of the World Cup, instead that match gave us confidence and we ended up winning the World Cup. Viv Richards was equally good. Both are the best I would say.

Andrew Symonds' maiden ODI century was quite an innings.
He was considered lucky by many (yours truly included) to have even made our '03 WC squad let alone get a chance in the opening game against pakisatn. Coming in at 3 down for 50 odd, symonds applied himself like never before, and at first built a sold platform, and then took off with an amazing display of power hitting and turned an australian innings that was headed for a 210 max total into 310.

I agree, that was some knock, but an innings shouldt just be judged on pace of innings. opposition, quality of bowling, condition of wicket, situation of team. Therefore on this basis i would say Sir Viv Richards innings is so far the best considering all factors. Saeed Anwrs 194 ws amazing and entertaining but it was a good wicket and pak were in a decent position.

|
I know you're from New Zealand, but I'm going to disagree with the fact that Fleming is New Zealand's batsman of reasonable quality, I think there are plenty of good New Zealand batsmen out there. There's Astle, who's still playing and did well for Lancashire this year. You have Styris who is good with the best. There is people like Vincent and Marshall who are good players, and the likes of Fulton, Papps and How are good prospects, plus going down your order, McCullum can bat well, so can Franklin and Vettori can be deadly with the bat on his day. Plus there are good prospects for New Zealand in the future, Jesse Ryder has an excellent future ahead of him and will represent his country fairly soon I'm fairly sure, and Nick Horsley is also a good player who could be picked in future.
Now, back to the point, I reckon that the best innings ever in ODI cricket came just a week ago, for South Africa against Zimbabwe with Mark Boucher hitting an incredible 147 from just 68 balls, now it may not be as high as some others, but to consistently score at that rate and reach such a high score is excellent, even against Zimbabwe, and it took score past the 400 mark for the second time, and in doing so South Africa became the first team in ODI history to pass the 400 mark twice. Plus another one that sticks in my memory is John Davison's 100 for Canada against the West Indies in the 2003 World Cup, it came up from just 67 balls, the fastest ever world cup century, and an incredible performance considering Canada were bowled out for just 36 by Sri Lanka the previous week, so mine go to Boucher and Davison. See below for the scorecards of these two games.
Boucher (147 from 68 balls):

I suppose it could have been but by scoring at over 2 runs per ball for 68 balls is excellent in my opinion.

yeah it is a fine display in terms of hitting but I do believe the value of an innings has been to considered in the context of the game it was played in.

The best one i've ever seen was Shahid Afridi's hundred(100) in just 37 balls with 11 sixes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These both were records that havent been broken yet....FASTEST CENTURY AND MOST SIXES IN AN ODI!
These both records haven't been broken yet!
it was against SriLanka.

Most sixes in an ODI is a joint record of Shahid Afridi and Santh Jayasuriya. Jayasuriya hammered 11 sixes against Pakistan in a 48 ball 100.

I like innings under pressure.
Steve Waugh's 120 under pressure
Jayasaria's 152 under pressure.
The VIV came in with his side in trouble and WI remained in trouble with VIV being the only batsman to worry the bowling side. Best by a mile.

189 of the best runs you'll ever see.
Against fair opposition too.

What about the Inzamam's innings of 122 against India two years ago. It came down all the way to six runs of the last ball. Dravid made 99 and India had made 345 and Inzi was under so much pressure. He nearly took Pakistan to victory. The player I fear the most along with Punter.

As dips said, Dravid's innings had to be counted too.
What about Ganguly's 183 along with Dravid who also made 145 in the same game.
When Saeed Anwar made 194, Dravid returned with a valiant 105. That was a good knock too.

Ganguly in the 99 WC slammed 183 agains SL. That was the Ganguly to watch lads! Real great ODI player he was. Its a shame he has lost his touch.

I still think that Kapil Dev's and Viv Richard's knock were the best ever. Under pressure, and Kapil Dev's being a do or die innings during the World Cup which India won.

When Ponting made his century in the 434 match against SA I remember getting all indignant when Miniwarney posted that it was the best one day innings ever, which it blatantly wasn't - and took great pleasure in being able to post a couple of hours later that not only was it not the best one day innings ever, it wasn't even the best innings in the match

Yup. Gibbs innings on that match was one of the best I have seen. Almost made it to 200.

Yeah, Ponting's was also good though, we saw two of the best One Day innings of all time in a single match!
The best innings in my view would have to be Vivian Richards 189, absolutely fantastic innings

I think that Ponting's innings was an easy one. A small stadium on a batting track with no pressure. Gibbs had much more pressure, but Richards innings was out the world. Second greatest ODI innings in my view.

The greatest innings I saw would be Javed Miandad's against India when he hit a six in the last ball. They showed the match so many times that month, I nearly memorised every ball.
Lance Klusener's great knock against the Aussies in the WC '99 semi-final.
There have been so many, I need to time to recall all of them.
Ganguly's first ball duck. Never knew he could he could stay out in the middle for so long.

Michael Bevan, against the West Indies, 4 on the last ball to win the match. He got like 78* or something.
Also against NZ, when Bevan got a ton and guided Australia to an unimaginable win against NZ, seriously we were down and dusted.

That 78* off 120 odd balls was fantastic and it really showed the good and bad of this sport. Roger Harper claimed a caught and bowled off bEVAN ONLY FOR THE REPLAY TO PROVE bEVAN WAS RIGHT IN STANDING HIS GROUND. tHE BALL BOUNCED WELL SHORT OF HARPER WHO CLAIMED THE CATCH. bAD SHOWMANSHIP BY BOTH FOR bEVAN TO DISAGREE AND STAND HIS GROUND AND FOR hARPER TO CLAIM IT. tHE SAME TWO SHOWED WHY THIS GAME IS GREAT WHEN hARPER WAS HIT STRIGHT BACK OVER HIS HEAD FOR FOUR BY bEVVAN OFF THE LAST BALL. rATHER THAN BE UPSET AND SULK, hARPER RAISED HIS HAND AND GAVE A CONGRATULATORY HIGH FIVE TO bEVAN SHOWING THE WAY THIS GAME SHOULD BE PLAYED.
