I am doing a bit of scouting around to get one for my club, so is there anyone expert on these things? Is there anything specific I should be looking for and do you know where I might get the deal of the century?

BOLA are the main bowling machines, some can do everything, seam, spin, slow

heres the link to their cricket site http://www.bola.co.uk/cricket.html - http://www.bola.co.uk/cricket.html

Tell you what though, they are much harder to bat against than normal bowlers!

Very true skip....I faced one for the first time in winter nets and found it a very intense experience - even at relatively slow speeds it feels like you have no time at all to respond

I agree. I think its because when a real bowler is bowling your feet respond better. When its a bowling machine its a ball coming out at once from nowhere. First time I faced it it was around 70mph and I just couldn't hit the ball, even though I have faced faster bowlers comfortably.

Exactly the same for me Shoaib - even at 65mph I was struggling to do any more than block it

i like bowling machines they give you the opportunity to concentrate solely on one shot and perfect it.

main problem with bowling machines is that you dont know exactly when the ball will come out, whereas a bowler, you can generally see during their action when the ball will be released, but this basically means if you can handle 70 mph on the bowling machine, you can probably face 75 or 80 without feeling rushed

They are good because reaction time is speeded up, but you cant really get your trigger movements in because theres the beep then a 2 second break and you're just waiting for it! Then it just speeds out at you! Good practice though!

Bowling machines are good for training but are pretty expensive

When we practice with bowling machines our coach holds the ball up right before he puts it in the machine so its easier to get your trigger movement right. Helps to have a coach or someone feeding the balls rather than a timer.

Excellent machines for grooving a particluar shot.

Should NEVER be used with the TIMER function.

Balls fed by a coach or responsible team mate is a MUST.

I used it last night on our clubs artificial nets, found it really good. I usually have a front foot trigger movement, but the people I was using it with tried to get me to do it without. I think they are great, good way of fine tuning certain shots and seem to be really really useful. Great piece of kit in my opinion and a must for all clubs who can afford one.

Are you guys serious? I faced one with no problems. It's just a matter of getting used to the pace of the machine.

Sorry right hand bat - we all mustn't be pro's like yourself. I don't actually remember anyone saying they struggled I think it is more the fact that you have to get used to it. I think the main thing people have been saying is they struggled because it is a lot different to facing a proper bowler, which is a very true statement, it is.

It is, but you just have to get used to it. It ain't that hard!!

Darlo_Lad,

Nothing wrong with your initial movement being forward. How else can you get on the back foot if you do not go forward first

To go on the back foot you go backwards no forwards? A forward movement is what I do to get my feet moving?

Every batsman does the same.

except if you have a well timed trigger movement involving both feet, such as Kallis, devilliers and Dippenaar, watch all of them do the trigger, and then either go forward or back, whereas many of the aussies go forward no matter then go back

we hav a bowling machine in the indoor nets i go to. i think the ball is hard to pick up even when some one is bowling at me so the bowling machine is extremely difficult to see. we use to types of ball and the red one you can barely see.
