Errrrrrrrrrrr no.

I have no problem with people having favourite players , but this kind of statement is simply stupid.

That Lara has the world record of 400 and many scintilating (and sometimes match winning ) innings cannot be denied , he is fantastic. But dismissing Tendulkar is sacrilege and deserves ridicule and a sharp response.

Go read the biographies of the top bowlers of the modern era , specifically Allan Donald and Shane Warne and see their comments. Both are full of praise for Lara's brilliance , but both bow to Tendulkar's sheer class.

When Warne admits to not knowing WHERE to bowl to the little fella , then that says it all.

Donald bowled Tendulkar with an absolutely beautiful ball that pitched a foot outside off and took the off stump at 90 mph , causing his aeroplane theatricals - that's what it meant to the man.

Simply put , both are superb players , don't dismiss either so easily , but Tendulkar at his sublime best was a top bowler's nightmare.

I nearly posted in this earlier as my impression was that technically, Tendulkar was (just) the better player but when it came down to it and an innings was needed to save or win a game, then Lara was your man.

I'm glad I didn't post then as I've just checked the stats and although raw stats don't tell all, Tendulkar just seems to have edge (although he is playing in a better Indian team than Lara's West Indian team of late.)

To be honest, I can't split them and I'm not sure I want to - both are outstanding players who have between broken several records, carried their teams on occasion and made batting look easy. I think it's too close to call.

Tendulkar or Lara, I don't think any-one can really answer who is better. They are very different players, but both geniuses (i hope that is the plural for genius!)

Tendulkar has the most runs in World Cup history, will score the most runs in test matches, and one dayers, and shall also hold the record for the most hundreds. He has the best technique I have seen. Stands perfectly still, and his cover drive is more attractive than a beautiful sunset. On his day, especially when he was younger, he can destroy a bowling attack, all with wonderful orthodox shots. He scores consistently, yet has never scored a double hundred (if i am not mistaken.) The only batsmen that Warne fears, when fit, I imagine he is the first on any-one's team sheet. The only thing missing from Tendulkar's resume: a truly, monumental, match winning innings.

Brian Lara has the highest score in Test cricket, the highest score in First Class Cricket, and has single handedly destroyed teams in the past, Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka, and Australia in the WIndies spring to mind. After having batted for 20minutes, he backs himself to score a run of each ball he faces. When he hits the ball, it stays hit, with his flamboyant back-lift, and a technique that at times brushes on the absurd. He either scores big, and fast, or fails, and is a bit of an enigma concerning his captaincy, and desire for the game.

Me personally, I prefer Tendulkar. His technique, the way he drives, everything about the little maestro, and his god like status, makes him my favourite batsman. Cricket is poorer for his abscene.

Excellent analysis, Wolfman but Tendulkar does in fact have four Test double centuries, interestingly though in three of those games (against New Zealand in 99/00 [217], against Zimbabwe in 2000/01 [201 not out] and Australia in 2003/04 [241 not out]) the matches were drawn, his best score coming in the victorious game over Bangladesh in 2004/05, 248 not out.

Thanks JP for showing me my error! I should really have looked, and not made such a statement, without fact!

Although, he hasn't made a triple hundred....!

lara is better in a way, i'm not saying in all aspects of the game. lara has scored many match winning tons which i feel tendulker might not have done as much as lara and lara is the only player in history who has scored a quadruple test century which i think is an amazing achievment that will stand alone for a long, long time.

on the other hand, tendulker is only 32 which means even though lara (35 years old) has more test runs than tendulker right now, tendulker could eventually end up as the highest Test run scorer because of the age advantage. tendulker is also already the highest ODI run scorer and lara doesn't even come close to that, so that's more credit to tendulker. Tendulker also has slightly better averages than lara in both forms of the game.

No one's mentioned Tendulkar's oft underrated bowling! JP , get the ole stats out and tell us how many wickets he's taken - it might prove illuminating !

Now surely no-one's going to praise Lara's bowling - I've never seen it !!

37 wickets at 48. Gives him the edge, I say.

I have never understood why people dismiss Tendulkar. Lara is exceptional, I agree, and when, at the age of 25, he had a test average of 67 and looked like being an all-time great, one probably would have stuck him ahead of Tendulkar. But he let personal problems and bad habits drag him down, and will end up with a career average in the low 50s rather than in the 60s. Tendulkar, on the other hand, has maintained a high 50s average throughout; not to mention a phenomenal ODI average of 44 at a strike rate of 86 with 38 ODI centuries, which is twice as many as the next best batsman! Tendulkar is head and shoulders above the rest. Yes, injuries have struck him down, but even the greatest have ended their careers to injury.

JH Kallis is the only player in history to have 8000 runs, 200 wickets and 100 catches in BOTH forms of the game. Only Sobers (tests) and Jayasuriya (one dayers) have achieved half that feat.

i certainly agree with you superbokkie. and i just like lara better than tendulker but i do admit to the fact that compared to what tendulker has accomplished in both forms of the game (according to stats), lara really can't compete.

Westendies Team is weaker than Indian team on the other hand Lara is best left handed and Tendulkar is best right handed batsman.

I wouldn't say that Tendulkar is the best right handed batsman...Don Bradman is. Lara is the best left-handed batsman and there is no doubt about it.

Hmmm, fans of Graeme Pollock might have something to say about that.

Oh wait. I forgot about him. I knew I was forgetting some great left-handed...He can also be called the best left-handed batsman but I would say there is some competition between him and Lara. If you look at Tendulkar and Bradman...Bradman is clearly better.

Graeme Pollock had a test average of 60 point something. That is amazing. He could have accomplished a lot more if it weren't for that problem when SA weren't allowed to play cricket. Lara is not much better than Tendulkar or Graeme Pollock...that's just your opinion because you have said nothing to support it.

Here's a few more points to throw into the Pollock v Lara debate:

Pollock scored a century every 5.9 innings, whereas for Lara that figure stands at 6.9. They both scored a century every 4.1 First Class innings but Pollock has a superior first class average (by almost 3 runs).

It's pretty impossible to compare batsmen of different eras, but that proves that Pollock can't be ruled as out as one of the all-time greats.

Yea, Pollock was a great batter but sadly he didn't get to accomplish as much as he could've.

Mebz ... pls get some common sense, I dont know how u get it but pls get it .

Everyone is sick and tired of seeing your mails directly or indirectly trying to stuff in everyone's mind that "Inzi is best "

I think u know the famous saying "A lie told 1000 times ,, dosent turn out to be the truth"

Once the Inzi's carrier will be over ,, there will be hardly anyone from the world cricket to remember him of any greatness.

He dosent came anywhere near Greatness. He will be just one more good player of pakistan ,, jsut like ur old warhorse Minadad or Salim Malik or Saeed anwar.

From ur country only one man of last decade will be remembered and that is Chaudhary Wasim Akram.

Inzi ---- B**LS**T [sorry to use this but fact].

He cant even run properly ,,, He is like a moose of Archies ,,, simply has power to hit ,, but no on cricketing brains.

Such hard words come coz u made me speak out these ... again and again ,, u are annoying everyone by saying "Inzi is best","Inzi is best","Inzi is best"...............

Grow up dude ,,,,, grow up
