We're just in 2007, and although there aren't any games just yet, I though I'd create a thread with some links to the latest stories, transfers and things.

Who are your tips for the titles this year?
And who do you think have recruited best over the winter?

Well we aren't winning any awards as regards recruitment, with the only player movements being those out the door!

I think we've done ok, with Langer returning, and Ben Phillips and Mark Turner being solid additions to the squad.

Here are my predictions going into the new county season for silverware:
County Championship Division One: Sussex (if they perform to their standard last year they could well retain the Championship, with stiff competition from Lancashire and Hampshire)
County Championship Division Two: Middlesex (expecting them to bounce back up to the top flight easily)
Pro40 League Division One: Essex (Won it for the last 2 seasons, so my early prediction is on a third straight title for Essex)
Pro40 League Division Two: Middlesex (same as before)
ECB Trophy: Sussex (backing them to retain the trophy if they perform as well as last season in this competition)
Twenty20 Cup: Leicestershire (won it twice in the last three seasons, have been the best at Twenty20 statistically since it's inception in 2003, backing them to do it again)

Plenty of action in the transfer market today:
Darren Gough going back to Essex, and Stuart Clark joining Hampshire.
Without looking at the article I've just put up, name as many other Australians who've played for Hampshire in recent years as you can. I thought of six straightaway; I may have missed some though.

Glamorgan have signed Aussie Matt Elliot for the first four weeks of
the coming season. Elliot was scheduled to play for Yorkshire until the
arrival of Younis Khan after the World Cup. Pakistan's early exit means
Younis will start the season at Yorkshire.
Elliot
will be replaced by fellow Aussie Jimmy Maher for the rest of the
season after his four week stint.

It will be fairly common knowledge by now I guess but Marcus Trescothick made his Somerset comeback today in a pre-season friendly against Devon, making a mere 256 fro 177 balls including 25 fours and 19 sixes (Somerset running up 502 for 4 off 50 overs!)

I must say when he vanished from Australia I was sure that was the last we'd be seeing of him but their opening woes in the shorter games makes me suspect he'll be back, possibly sooner than anyone could have imagined - if he wants to expose himself to that level again that is.

That's just like in tennis, where you can challenge the umpire. Where's the point of the umpire being there, everything'll just get referred to the 3rd umpire. All the on-field umpires will have to do is wave their arms about occasionally.

Cook will have taken plenty from the Ashes debacle. He
perished too often to catches in the slip cordon and hopefully will
have worked hard on that weakness. I expect great things from the lad
and he can cement his place at the top of the order against West Indies
next month.
An encouraging start for Harmison too , taking three wickets and
breaking Yardy's finger! Early season pitches should be lively ,
but with a beautiful summer forecast the batsmen should score plenty of
runs this season.
Harmison will be crucial in the two test series , especially if the surfaces are fast and true.

Well Somerset definitely have a very exciting team and it wouldn't surprise me if they challenged for promotion this season. With Langer, Trescothick, Hildreth and White spearheading the batting it could be very explosive, especially in one-day and Twenty20 cricket, with caddiŁk and Willoughby spearheading the bowling attack with Jones, Andrew and Turner as extra seam options, with Munday, Blackwell and Suppiah as spinners and the wicket-keeping duel between Gazzard and Spurway it should be a very exciting season for them.
Also for my other team Lancashire I think we've got a very good chance of winning the County Championship too, hopefully Flintoff, Anderson and Mahmood will perform upon their return and we've got the batting options of Loye, Chilton, Sutcliffe, Law and Horton and Sutton our wicket-keeper can bat too. Chappell, Cork, Hogg, Newby and Keedy will also make for good bowling when the others are off on international duty, although I admit I'm not a fan of Cork. But Hogg, Chappell and Cork can also bat, which is also good for the Red Rose, so I'm looking forward to a good season for both Somerset and Lancashire.

Surrey look to have started well bowling at Yorkshire, 87-4 on a good batting pitch (not that I know that the pitch is good, I'm just guessing from what everyone else is saying)
|

Well I said that Jaques Rudolph would struggle early on this
season before scoring plenty of runs later and I was dead right - not !!
He scored 122 (20*4 3*6) and along with the young legspinner
Rashid (86 14*4 1*6) helped Yorkshire to 390-8 by the close
against newly promoted Surrey.
Fine start by the South African after Yorkshire's top order had been blown away!

Fairly disappointed by both Somerset and Lancashire's performances yesterday, I hoped to be able to go down to Taunton this morning to watch the Tresco and Langer show but such as it is that I'll now be watching a Middlesex procession until they declare (which won't be until around 500) so I hoped for better but maybe Middlesex could lose several early wickets and Somerset could be batting by lunch.
Lancashire didn't fare much better, as they only managed to take 5 Worcestershire wickets yesterday, but at least that means that if one early wicket is taken then they are into the tail so it shouldn't hopefully take that long to clear them up, but not a good day for me yesterday, hopefully today will prove to be a better game for us.

Godleman played fantastically and yes the wicket is as flat as they come, I've just said to JP when I was there (which was from 5 overs played until tea) there were two wickets, Owais Shah was trapped lbw to a really good ball from Peter Trego and the catch to dismiss Neil Edwards was a beauty, a one-handed catch from the fielder at short leg after he'd had to dive down low to get there.
Godleman was dropped in the 80's by Cameron White, it was an absolute howler, the ball came straight to him and he put it down, I felt like saying something to him afterwards (he was stood 10 metres from me on the boundary) but I decided against risking getting chucked out of the ground.
Good news for England fans, Trescothick looked in blinding form today, he hit his 50 in 44 balls and the only error he made was an edge which went through the slips for 4, he brought up his 50 with 4 consecutive boundaries, and him and Langer were just smacking them all over the park (no sixes yet though).
However it's obvious that the game's going to end up a draw barring a momumental slip-up with the bat for either of the teams.
Sunday's game against Glamorgan should be good to watch if the pitch is this good, it looks like the supporters could be in for a good and exciting high-scoring match at Taunton.

Just returned from the play at Taunton today, due to other commitments I only got down there 25 overs into the Somerset innings but it was a game well worth watching. A name for the future is Craig Kieswetter, he played brilliantly to score 69 coming in when Somerset were on 180-6 and got them up to 310-9. He also took an absolutely stunning catch to get rid of Alex Wharf the pinch-hitter for just three. Peter Trego took 4-54 and bowled very well on another great batting track. For Simon Jones fans you'll be pleased to know he took 3 wickets today and looked in good form.
Glamorgan started badly and slipped to 39-3 but recovered and had a shot at victory before two wickets in two balls from Trego and caddiŁk respectively took the game away from them, a good match. Somerset eventually won by 24 runs as Glamorgan racke dup 286-8. Also new player Mark Turner seems to be the Monty of Somerset as far as support goes, however he bowled reasonably well and only went for over 60 runs because Robert Croft decided to slog everything at the end when there was really no chance of victory, but he didn't field a lot so you can't say he's a carbon copy of Monty.
However in comparison the whole Glamorgan team fielded like Monty's, Davies went head first into the crowd twice in two balls and they didn't really try to catch skied balls when a little bit of running would've got them out. The only skied catch they took didn't count because it was a no ball.
Good game though, and hopefully plenty more like that to come during the long season ahead.
P.S. At least Somerset gave me something to cheer about when you consider Lancashire's abysmal performance earlier today.

Grace Road:
Somerset 357 (84.4 overs) PS Jones 114!, Trescothick 77, caddiŁk 51!, Masters 6-60
Leicestershire 58-3 (17 overs) Robinson 26*, Maunders 26, Willoughby 3-10
Blimey, great recovery from the Sabres after they went from 71-5 at one stage to end up on 357, with Trescothick continuing his good form with 77 from 128 balls, however what has got to be more impressive is the 146 run 9th wicket partnership between Steffan Jones and Andy caddiŁk, Jones amazingly scored 114 and caddiŁk 51, talk about a tail-end recovery. Willoughby also bowled excellently to take 3-10 from 6 overs.
Lancashire are playing Durham Uni today and Durham Uni are 298-6 from 104 overs, hopefully the tail will be cleared up fairly early in the morning and Lancashire can then put up a good total in reply.
Clobs did you get down to Grace Down today, if so can you report on the action today down there?

I don't know, but they're never far out at the oval for a one dayer, and they're ridiculously close to the players for the T20. Gives your average cricket watcher what they want though.

Indeed the top 5 or 6 have been fantastic so far this season especially patel. It will be interesting to see who drops out when Fleming returns

And of course Will Jefferson is still to come in. And as most if not all of the top half have got a century already this season, so it is certainly going to be interesting

I said before start of play today that Katich would score a double century at Taunton...
...he's on 132 at the moment.

It looks like another easy draw for the folks at Taunton this week, heading down on Sunday for the Ireland game but I'm not going on Saturday if there's going to be another nothing game in the County Championship, but the Friends Provident should be a good one to watch.
By the way here's how the England players have fared on their come backs from the World Cup:
Liam Plunkett (31 (57) and 5-2-14-0)
Paul Nixon (no catches or stumpings and not yet required to bat) Michael Vaughan (72 (123))
Monty Panesar (18-2-72-1)
Ravi Bopara (26 (63), Alastair Cook also hit a century for Essex)
Not bad really from any of them, the only disappointment for me would be that Monty only took 1-72 from 18 but I don't know what the pitch is like, it could've been like a Brisbane for the spinners for all we know so you can't judge the performance on figures, especially considering that Monty has bowled fairly well for England in ODI cricket and averages 39.

Yes, Freddie, they are playing on the road again down in Taunton.
Shame I didn't put any money on Katich making a double!

At least it wasn't his knee Kerm! Sussex belted by an innings twice already this season - who'd have thought that!
Even more surprising - Yorkshire used three
legspinners during the 1st innings of Hampshire yesterday! The
promising youngster Rashid sent down 26 overs of top quality leggies
(watched by Shane too!) and wasn't cut for 4 once - classy stuff.
Rudolph and Younis sent down a few too - surely that's a first for a
Yorkshire side in their history - amazing stuff!
England mustn't rush the youngster , but England's outlook
is much brighter with the possibilty of finally finding a quality wrist
spinner (and he bats too!). Well done Terry Jenner , the work in
the winter is bearing fruit.

Rats!!! Just read on the BBC site that Vaughan's got a
fractured middle finger and could be out for 3-4 weeks. No luck
has he and worse still , it was done by Aussie , Stuart Clark!!
I can hear the guffawing from 10,000 miles away!

I think someone needs to have a conversation with the GM about the quality of their gloves.....
Wonder who will captain now, I imagine they will give it to Strauss or Colly.

I'd have thought Strauss. If there's good news about Vaughan's
injury , the selectors shouldn't have a headache choosing the batting
lineup for the 1st test.

Got to be Strauss. Vaughan's injury will have eliminated any doubts about his place in the side.
