I just feel for Scotland and Holland. Two great teams with great batting lineups. South Africa and Australia would be hot favourites for the World Cup. South Africa racking up massive totals from 50 overs is something special, obviously.

I think that the South African's will be the only team to rival Australia in the World Cup Tournament. Both team's capable of scoring over 400 from the 50 overs.

I appreciate your confidence Titan but I really don't think Scotland will quite go all the way.

In reality the game against Holland is our final so win that and just try to avoid record thrashings against the others, and I'll be content.

No big surprise in that prediction Titan , the two best one day sides around!

That is until Australia fall apart on Friday and SA suffer the same fate tomorrow!Wink

Gambs , what odds a final without either of these two?

Well, seeing that Scotland and Holland are in a group with the 2 powerhouse of ODI's today, I think we are in for some record breaking. They are lucky they aren't being hosted in St. Lucia!

Don't be that sure. Bit Slow turning wicket and confronted with a side with spinners like Ind, SL or NZ SAF will be in serious trouble.

This is obviously going to be Australia's and South Africa's group. Scotland and Holland don't stand a chance against these two sides. I just hope that if it's a great batting track that the Scots and the Dutch bat first or you could be seeing scores of up to 500 and 300 run wins, which isn't good for cricket. But obviously it has to be Australia and SA to qualify.

It s tough now but my vote for SA cause Symond might not be able to play in the WC -- without Symond - it s hard to tell whether Austrailia might win or not --
Austrailia is good team though but looking at the previous record which Australia lost to SA in SA -- so, it s SA who will take Group A -

Australia can win without Symonds, he is just a talented slogger really, Australia have many of those. If they had lost Ponting or Hussey they would have been in more trouble.

Let's hope the Aussies and South Africans bat first against both minnows - that way their batsmen will be absolutely knackered when they go into the super 8!

I reckon Scotland could qualify with "fiery" bowlers like Haq and Brown and Ryan Watson who is as good as Afridi at slogging. Wink

Yes, I think the Aussies will be in for a big surprise when they play their second team against tthe bonny scots.

In South Africa's case it depends on the pitches they produce at St Kitts. If the pitches are slow turners then Scotland and Holland may give them more than just a run for their money.

Slow turners are not, SA is gonna go through along with Aussie!!

Be realistic guys, Scotland and Holland are novice and can't even compete with bangladesh, how in the world are they gonna beat SA of all side. SA always rip the **** out of the small sides!

I know, I just ment that South Africa won't win as convincingly if they play Scotland and Holland on a turning wicket as opposed to a pace and bouncy surface.

It will be a real cracker to see who will win the game between SA and Aus though. Remember South Africa have a team capable of beating Australia, they have a strong line up (although the top order is a bit inconsistent) and one of the best middle orders in the world. They also have a good fast bowling attack and if the pitches are fast, the last attack I would want to face would be South Africa's.

So Haddin will be the wicket keeper and probably bat at 6 or 7. I actually think that for the games that for the games that Gilchrist is away for they should try putting Hussey opening. The first 3 batsman in a ODI should be the ones that are most likely to hit 100 and those 3 would be Gilchrist Hussey and Ponting and with Gilchrist out next would be Hayden.

On another interesting fact if Haddin were to somehow get injured the Australian's will put Hussey in to keep! Has anyone seen him keep?

Pretty much the squad that everyone here expected the South African selectors to choose.  Conservative too , van der Wath and Morkel can count themselves rather unlucky. Telemachus is a real donkey in the field and stands out in an otherwise spritely outfit , they'll be a hard nut to crack.

I remember in an ODI match between West Indies and South Africa a while ago Langdvelt got a hattrick and caused his team to win the match. Those west indians just could not handle his bowling. But then again it's west indies we are talking about......

-------------

Posted By: Sledger

Langeveldt has been quite successful at "death" bowling - not particularly quick , but good lines with a touch of away swing.
The team will be pretty confident after watching Australia struggle this last month. If Brett Lee doesn't make it I see SA beating them and if they bat first , making a big score into the bargain.

South Africa currently have Pollock and Kallis in top wicket-taking and run-scoring form, and a fully fit team with a powerhouse batting line-up of: Smith, de Villiers, Kallis, Gibbs, Prince, Kemp, Boucher, Pollock, Hall and super bowlers in Ntini, Pollock, Langeveldt, Nel, Hall, Kallis and Kemp.

Australia have the misfortune of missing Symonds, Gilchrist and now, Brett Lee, and possibly Matt Hayden! We saw what England and New Zealand did to a depleted Australia, what could South Africa possibly do? In February last year on a difficult track Ntini took 6-22 as Australia bowed out for 87 - could that happen again?

I pick South Africa to win this group and go on to win the World Cup. You are right - the winner of Pool A should win the tournament.

-------------
JH Kallis is the only player in history to have 8000 runs, 200 wickets and 100 catches in BOTH forms of the game. Only Sobers (tests) and Jayasuriya (one dayers) have achieved half that feat.

Posted By: daisy77
Date Posted: 20 February 2007 at 2:52pm

yes 3 loses in a row against New Zealand must really dent their confidence. Not only would NZ be happy with their performance against the aussies but all the other teams should be too. Now it's no longer an aussie "walk over", everyone will think they have a chance....and that's a really good thing....

yes aussies dfeats were not a surprise...i beleive this would have happened even if thier top players had played..!! I feel Brett Lee's absence should not harm aussies plans a great deal. They play Bret Lee to take wickets. Aussies selectors have included far too many similar type of bowlers in thier squad, like johnson, lee and tait. All of them go for plenty!! A staurt Clark would have done the job. Thier bowling is gonna strugglr. Specially on windies tracks, they ae not gonna get the bounce and pace even!!

Lee has been ruled out of the WC and Clark has been added to take his place. Now, the bowling look's a lot better with him included, that's for sure!

ya it looks better!! but clark has not been a success story in onde dayers...infact he has been the second worst bowler by economy in death overs!! Brt Lee's story was not any different. We cannot expect McGrath alone to curtail all runs from one end. johnson Tait Watson will all leak runs!! Clark might not be that effective in windies conditions

You can't compare Brett Lee with Clark. Brett Lee is a phenomenon, probably the best fast bowler today, he has destroyed many top orders for Australia and therefore setup easy victories. Clarke is a decent bowler, but lacks the pace of Lee. I think this is a massive blow for Australia!

M.Johnson is very good too so if he is playing they shouldn't miss Lee that much......I know Lee has the experience but Johnson is such a good bolwer that I think even if he does not totally make up for Lee , he is going to coming very close to fulfilling that job.

Where was I comparing them? I just said the bowling lineup look's a lot better with Clark included because of Lee's absense. Without Clark, and no Lee, it'd look a ton worse.

The only thing clarke will take into the world cup is the memory of being not considered first choice for world cup or ODI for Ausies, and expect not be in the starting line up of most matches. AUsies have their first choice bowlers in Macgrath, Tait, Bracken, and Jhonson, so probably wont go to be playing memeber's mindset. If they include him in a crucial match it would be either to replace an injured or resting player as he should and would not selected on merit!

Tait has never performed in the role his team will be expecting this time around, and the pressure will matter a lot. To replace lee is not an easy task, lee has learnt his lessons the real hard way, but has perfected himself as one of the best odi bowler for his team. Macgrath or bracken hardly look like bowlers to provide break through in the middle overs, so Tait has to pitch in , and that in a mega event where the stakes are high is not easy and can make or break a career or two!

Making use of the new ball in the West Indies is very vital! After the shine goes, their is practically no more swing! Their is hardly any lateral movement back here so fast bowlers will have to put in the extra work!

THe most crucial part will be the second spells of almost all the bowlers, and bowlers who cant reverse swing, dont have a good slow ball, cant bowl 4/6 yorkers will struggle for sure. I think macgrath will have to be bowled within 25-30 overs, still ausies will find it hard to bowl at death.

Totally agree with you there mate! The pitches back here do have a bit for roughing up the ball and I saw pathan recently use the reverse swing to the end well. The meastros at it will be handy at the death if they get them on target like Vaas!

To me Vaas would be the key to lankan success as he has to take responsibility with the new ball and in the end too, and he has the talent and the experience to prove the real factor for lankan win.

the Taits, Malingas, Bonds, Jerome Taylors will struggle more than genuine medium pacers. All these bowlers have a tendency to overpitch and they will go for runs. Whoever bowls back of length will get the  reward.

The ball gets rough and gets scuffed very early in windies consitions and with the breeze blowing, i go for Maharoof as he is one bowler who swings and likes to swing in the air more than off the pitch.

The runs does matter A LOT spin because it's ODI cricket we are talking about.....every run counts....I think what he has to do is make a little deal with Lara if he is going to go for a lot of runs he has to learn how to bat  (I am sure Brian won't mind giving him a few pointers and teaching him a few techniques) so that he will be able to make up for the excessive runs that he gave away while bowling with the bat. LOL A couple of fours and who knows maybe even a six from him would be make all the west indians happy!

Who do you prefer as Opening pair for South Africa?

Smith and De Villiers or Smith and Bosman?

I don't know too much about this but I'll say Smith and De Villiers.

If Bosman can pick up a little more consistency, I'd rather see them drop Prince to make space for him. Then let him open with Smith and bat de Villiers at 5.

I am sacred about Tait. He seems to be the key figure to our team but he is unproven. What does Nathan Bracken need to do in order to be recognised as being present. Since his recall, Bracken has outdone all other Aussie bowlers in regards to economy rate, average and strike rate. When he is opening, he can swing it both ways and at the death, he bowls offies. he went for a few in NZ but he holds the key for our success. McGrath will have his good days but the ageless warrior is showing the signs of alot of cricket and while the heart and soul is willing, he is simply unable to perform as he used to. This being said he deserves to be there. Aussies will be there but on the back of people like Bracken, Hogg, White, Clarke. These four along with Gilly, Ponting and Hussey need to carry whoever makes up the remaining 4 places because they are going to be weaknesses.

Not the Windies! England, Aussie etc were here. I am going to watch Aussie and England friday. Look out guys, I will be in the double decker stand - the bottom floor though. I will be the one going berserk when the English win! Wink

Australia Vs Scotland, so are we in for a tough match today, well to make a statement I would like to see a powerfull performance from ausies, like, 400 batting first, may be a new record batting first, and getting them out for 50 runs ( 25 would be too low a total I guess!)

so far so good!

That's what I'm hoping for too, wiseguy. Just to show everyone that Australia isn't in poor form.

Ausies love a situation like that, unfortunately the lack of competitive sides for them has resulted in a lot of complacensy and probably they would love to see teams fighting them out! But still they are amongst the top favourites for the cup!

I don't think doing that to a team like scotland would show we are in form, it's one of those games, if we smash them " thats what a team like aust should do" if it's a bit closer " aust  are really struggling for form" I do hope we win the toss and let the horse out for a gallop though, will make it worth sitting up for.

I don't want to speak to soon, but I don't think they will bowl them out for 50 or under! The wickets in the windies is almost like the sub continent, it makes batting a little easier. I think 120 is more realistic!

I think Aus will murder Scotland, and they should! You can't compare the teams at all!
