I checked out wikipedia's info on bowling,

"...A bowler delivers the ball toward the batsmen, using what is known as a bowling action: the elbow may be held at any angle and may bend further, but may not straighten out during the action. If the elbow straightens, it is an illegal throw and the delivery is called a no-ball. Under new cricketing law, after consultation with health experts, the bowler is allowed to straighten his arm 15 degrees or less; if the bowler straightens his arm more than 15 degrees it is called a "no ball". ... "

When they mention this 15 degrees are they in reference to the upward and downward angle of the arm OR is it that an elbow can't be bent greater than 15 degrees.

For example if a ball is bowled and an arm is straight out with no bend that would be considered a released bowl at 0 degrees since it's straight out, but if the arm is straight and is low it would be - degrees in angle...

Thanks ahead for any explanations.

It would mean that the elbow can't be bent more than 15 degrees. It's all a bit strange, I'm sure someone will help you more than me. Big%20smile

From what you have copied accross I would say that you can start with your arm bent to any degree. From there it is legal to bend further still (ie your forearm getting closer to your upper arm).

But the problem arises when your arm is bent from the start of the action, and straightens as your arm comes over, more than 15 degrees (i.e roughly from / to |   ).

At least thats what I read from that text, whether that is the law I am unsure, but it would certainly make sense as it the action of straightening the arm that generates more pace.

yeh homer i think youve gotten it right, theres nothing wrong with hanving your elbow bend, its if it straightens by more that 15 degrees that its a no ball.

For example if you do a throw (like u would into a wicket kepper when fielding) youll notice that your arm straightens, this is because its a throw.

Reminds me of the Faulty Towers episode when Basil and Sybil are chatting in the kitchen. Sybil rambles on repeatedly about something inane and Basil pipes up ," Sybil Fawlty , mastermind contestant , answering questions on the bleeding obvious!"

I'm a big fan of English classical comedy shows! Did you ever have a favourite Sledger? I always liked "Are you being served?". English comedy shows have a sophisticated type of comedy, thats rather funny.

you are allowed to EXTEND your elbow 15 degrees. this mean that the elbow is bent and then extends (throwing). you can have your arm completely bent, more than 15 degrees, as long as you do not not extend the elbow, this means keeping it bent the same amount all the way round. this is where stupid people get confused and say that murali is a chucker. although his arm is bent which is quite visible, it does not extend more than 15 degrees, it only extends 12 degrees (which is the same amount of extension as glenn mcgraths bouncer).
