My 13 y.o. son has had winter batting coaching this year which has seen him rise from 9 / 10 in the batting order last summer to opening this summer (he was really pleased at this). The problem is that he has failed in the middle on each of his 5 innings but more worryingly, while he looks solid and capable in the nets, he seems to revert back to old bad habits in the match situation and looks dodgy to say the least!! He is smaller than most of his team mates but is not overly small and his newly-found confidence seems to be diminishing with each match!
Any advice I can pass on would be appreciated!!

I have no experience in coaching but I see that most youngsters' problem is that they try and hit most if not all deliveries to the fence.

My advice would be to make it a point to get the first few balls in the middle of the bat.  That way the boy gets to spend some time in the middle and after that he would have to realize that each ball has to be played on its merit.  Getting dots off the good balls and putting away only the bad ones is perfectly acceptable.

Focussing on his technique more than anything in the nets will help too since this will give him confidence when hes batting.  If the bowlers are doing especially well on a particular day, he will always have his solid technique to fall back on.  Once he gets rid of his old habits, he will automatically, in time, be able to score handsomely off the good deliveries too.

Thanks for your reply. If anything he's a little too tentative, his defence is good (esp. in the nets) but when it comes to attacking the bad balls his natural action is to hold back rather than crash it. The result is he struggles to score and gets himself out often by getting frustrated by himself or by his team mates...

Maybe he is worrying too much about getting out rather than just enjoying his batting.

only time in the middle will solve the problem, id sugguest that untill he gets this confidence he should just try and stay in as long as possible, the big shots will come later on

I know his problem! I was like that when I was 13. I used to be really good in the nets but I'd go back to m old ways in the middle probably because I was nervous because I'd always have in my mind that I would get out next ball, which probably made me even more nervous which didn't help at all. I don't think like that at all now and it's helped my battting. I've always had the technique but it was my mindset, which I think might be his main problem. I used to hold back on shots but ot I just follow through with it and it seems to work much better :)

Thanks for that, I'll tell him! He is happy defending and blocking but when he tries to attack a bad ball, he often holds back on the shot and either can't get it away or lobs up a catch - in the nets he can attack more confidently (doesn't matter if he get's out so much). The result is he scores slowly and gets pressured to quicken which isn't his game. He's worried about slipping down the order which would be bad as he appears to be in the mould of an opener..

All he has to do is treat matches like a net session. There have been countless centuries scored in the nets that would be certain ducks if the batsman was nervous.

This might seem hard to believe for those who know me better, but I batted as though I was playing with my mate in the garden and scored 44. LOL

If nothing else works, I'd resort to bribary- that worked for Dwayne Leverock! LOL
