I don't know how many people here read SPIN and saw the article on recovery techniques, or who might play for clubs with players who regularly do this, but for those contemplating (or already using) ice baths, you should read the article above.

Well, I don't think you'd catch me in an ice-bath at any time of day!

You wouldn't catch me in one either. Hot baths all the way for me.

If the cold is bad, then the magic spray has to be bad too!! After all, the magic spray let of a coldish thing that stops the blood from clotting or whatever it does to reduce the swelling!

Yeah, but that's just applied to one area of the body, an ice bath is applied to the whole body - the temperature change is gonna be pretty extreme and I don't think that's good for you.

Well, I know the ice is good for swelling as soon as it happens but bathing in ice is totally not my sort of idea. I don't think I'll stand that kind of coldness. Maybe it's only people that experience winter can stand it.

Yes NZF , fascinating article. The results are
inconclusive though , measuring pain is subjective and an individual's
perception could change from day to day.
Maybe taking some muscle tissue from
each guinea pig and quantitatively measuring lactic acid levels is the
best way to resolve the issue!

I'm just going to nod my head at that Sledger
I sometimes take cold showers because they apparently make you live longer. However, the common view is that people would just rather live shorter lives than go through cold showers.

True, but then again they didn't have the incentive of cricket to make them live any longer!

I may be wrong, but don't cold baths cause atrophy of the gonads?

Latest practice is that the water should not be below 10 degrees
C, and that it should be alternated with warm water.
In Aus the football people are at the forefront of the current thinking
- 3 minutes cold shower, 3 minutes warm shower and repeat 3
times. The idea is to constrict the blood vessels and move the
lactic acid, reduce inflammation around the joints etc..
Some sucess has been reported by athletes working out in the cold sea
water or swimming pools the day after the strenuous exercise.
