What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a grip like Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya and others and also the kind of batting grip that Adam Gilchrist uses? Does any modern day batsman use the correct batting grip as prescribed in coaching manuals?

The grip is a very personal thing. You have to grip the bat the way that feels natural for you. That way you'll play better because you aren't focusing on sorting your grip out every 2 seconds.

Best person to look at, Chiv. Chanderpaul. You can't find a more natural grip and stance than his. No coaching manual in the world will show you to hold a bat or stand like that.LOL

Haha, indeed Tyke and that's why I say, if it's working for you, do it. Not because someone plays conventional and is great doesn't mean you have to do it like them. Murali and Shiv are 2 good examples. Malinga too!

Using your own grip is a big advantage. Don't ever change it.

Some advantages to using a grip like Sachin Tendulkar's would be that you get more bottom hand power in your drives, you get more batspeed as you swing the bat down. Bottom-hand grips are useful for playing elegent drives, and effortless shots, while having a grip like Gilchrist's at the top of the blade involves putting effort in swinging the blade down quickly, but once you connect it can be a great result.
