It's ok to have a preference, But if you can't hit anything to the leg side, you should tell your coach, and ask for help with it.

To the optimist, the glass is half full.

To the pessimist, the glass is half empty.

To the engineer, the glass is twice the size it needs to be.

I am sure taking a "swing" at it as you say can't be helping! I'm not much cop off my legs either but I find I have far more success looking to time the ball onto the leg side as opposed to whacking it and you might find the same yourself if you focus on working those balls for singles instead of trying to blast them out the park.

I find i also have this problem anything on legstump i will defend. Or attempt an ondrive  but it would be alot easier if i could play a leg glance, when i attempt the shot i get hit on the pad, usauly resulting in plum LBW any advice.

Just out of curiosity legspinner, do you wear a thighpad?

nah i don't bother wearing one because I used a tip to help me when batting which was to get hit lightly on your body, prefably round the leg area. After this I found I got a bit more agressive and in 1 match hit 3 sixes and 2 fours in 1 over! Sorry for late reply, been on holiday Tongue

Then when you play against quicker bowlers you get hit on the leg an can't walk for a week. I know this because I don't wear one either

I was just curious because i couldn't seem to play legside shots, then i started wearing a thigh pad and suddenly i could, you should try it again.

Balance, it's all down to balance.

You will find this is because you are falling over to the offside to try to play the shot!
The secret to playing any cricket shot is having your head in-line with the ball or obviously as close to the line as possible....

I have a tendency to fall over myself when I am out of form which is pretty much all the time these days..... try to stay still in the crease as long as possible... I found this helps... although its hard to do.

One thing you have to do is just help the ball along - thats easy and will bring you plenty of runs. If you try to slap it across the line you will miss the ball most of the time.

I think this is a good choice, especially when the ball is at high speed.

I also have a problem with legside shots but my problem is that I try to just touch it instead of trying to smash it.

When we play indoor cricket (which is most of the time here in Canada), you can score the most run straight back behind the bowler.  Due to this, when we go outdoors in the summer, its very difficult to play square of the wicket.  The cuts, cover drives etc. come to you eventually but a lot of people find it hard to play good flicks, leg glances, pulls and hooks.

I have made a serious effort to back myself to play square of the wicket on the leg side this season and have been quite successful.  I would offer two tips:

1.  Back yourself to score runs square of the wicket on the on-side.  Be confident.  If you read the line of the ball quickly and know its missing leg stump, then believe you can capitalize on the bad delivery.

2.  In the beginning, do not try to hit the ball hard at all.  Like Clob said, try to work it away for a single.  Even that will give you the confidence to play the big shot in the future.

its all about using using your wrists, get in line with the ball and at the last moment flick the ball, using the pace of the ball it will go far

The key is to keep your head level and still.

Ask the Indians, they'll say learn without pads.

The trick is to play it late. Dont jam your feet, go back and acrosee just a slight bit, let the ball come to you rather than going out for it. Play it under your eyes, watch it onto the pad. AHving said that, leg side game has a lot to do with natural talent and also with the bounce of the track

I'm pretty gifted on my legs, as I said, learn without pads and you'll get good on it.  Sometimes if the deck is slow, I does push out the bat and then twist the face instead of letting it come on because there would hardly be any pace to work with if you wait on it.
