Hi Guys, I want to get your opinion on which are the best practice balls to buy. I want to be able to practice with my mate in the nets during our lunch break but don't want to get padded up etc.
Which ball would you recommend that is light enough to not hurt but still feels and behaves like a real ball?
Thanks in advance!

Yer, if you use a tennis ball even if it is taped up it will not be heavy enough. There are some thick shelled tennis-ball type balls which they sell here in Australia by Slazenger that are for nets practice. They are heavy enough to bowl proper pace with, however, if you use them on concrete nets pitches they bounce WAYYYYY too much. There's also those plastic coated, as opposed to leather balls with a full seam. They are okay for you purposes. The key is to get a ball that is as close to 156g as possible.
------------- Ideal cricketer: Bowl like Warne, bat like Tendulkar, field like Jonty!!

143no is quite right, anything that's soft won't behave the same as a hard ball! Tape ball will come a bit close but they're too slow off the pitch and through the air for spinners compare to a hard ball.

Why don't you just get padded up? It doesn't take that long to put pads on.

Hi Slogger - Its a fair point but it means keeping pads etc at work!
The Slazenger ball that Milkman speaks of seems good for our purposes but I don't want it to bounce that much - I've used a tape ball before but find it too light. Milkman, if bowled at 85mph (not that my mate bowls that fast, but just to be safe!) will it hurt if it hits me on the shins?
Any other thoughts appreciated!

Get the pads on mate, we practice with tape ball occassionally now, a few of us and some of the guys even bother to put on pads.
