Since I'm down with Ashes fever, I thought I'd read Cricket: My World by Wally Hammond in which he gives the reader an inside look of the 1946-47 Ashes down under (which AUS won 3-0).

In the book, he basically says that in the England 'batting line' of 46-47, he can think of only one other player who could turn a match on its head other than Denis Compton, and that was Charlie Barnett of Gloucester.  He said when fit and in-form, he was one of Hammond's first choices against the aussies.

I looked on Cricinfo, and it came up with a first-class batting avg of 21 odd and he never played any tests.  There wasnt even a write-up about him.  Anyone know/heard anything about him?

I am not sure which cricinfo version do you use matey. The one I use gives a first class average of 32.7 and a test average of 35. aNd there is a detailed write up on him as well.

Charlie Barnett was a fine player and holds the record for an Ashes opening partnership with the great Len Hutton!  They put on 219 in the Trent Bridge test of 1938 , the same series where Hutton made the then highest individual score of 364.
