Hey all.
I'm in the process of building a free online cricket game ( http://www.theonlinecricketgame.com - www.theonlinecricketgame.com ) and would like to get feedback as well as any ideas / improvements / features that people would like to see in the game.
The game currently launches through Java Web Start and requires Java v1.6 to play.
The initial idea of the game is:
1. Start as a club cricketer controlling only your actions on and off the field
2. Achieve goals to enable to you become captain and get selected in your first class and international teams.
3. Captains can control all players in the team
The game is meant to be a free, playable, statistical game where the people playing the game say how it is built.
All and any feedback would be great... If anyone wants to help with the design side of things then they would become a start in my books as you will see it is not the prettiest of applications.
Cheers all,

OK. I've uploaded another version of the game tonight. A few things to note: 1. Cashflow is not fully implemented which means you get an initial cash flow of $650, once you have spent this you get no more Once the cashflow & sponsorship is setup you will be able to earn more money and buy more products. 2. A few labels are missing. Such as in the GearBag... those numbers are the ratings. 3. Career overview is only the 'shell' but should be done very shortly. 4. Images in the shops will change when I get a minute. Gear will be rated better also. 5. The extra rating points from your gear are added to your batting & bowling rating but do not show that anywhere at this stage. That will be fixed tomorrow. Fixed: Fixed the coaching tips issue for bowlers so that they now show simple bowling tips. All feedback welcome Cheers tocg

I am currently taking a look. For some reason it will not let my match progress to the next innings - whenever I try to advance I get a bowling alert.

Hey - Let me have a look. This same thing happened to me but I thought I had fixed that bug. Do you know which option you had selected from Ball, Over, Till Your Bat, Innings, Next Wicket? I think it's because I have missed a line of code somewhere.
Let me know if you can and I'll get it sorted ASAP.

I've been thinking about this point and not sure that I want to do it. I think the game should have more of a focus on the details of being a cricketer instead of doing the few things a captain does in a game.
I'm thinking a better approach to building this game is to say... So far i've built a shell of a cricket game ( http://www.theonlinecricketgame.com - www.theonlinecricketgame.com ), there is no plan for the game except to improve on whats already there and to build in the features that those who are playing the game want included.

I won't be uploading the new version for a couple of days.
Have got a fair bit done over the weekend but need to iron out a few things before I upload.
I have added in the cashflow and sponsorships so you now earn money from your sponsor as you play.
I've also added in an 'aging' process for gear so your gear will wear out as you use it. If you find that you are having to buy too much gear then let me know and ill change it up a bit.
I've also added in a highlight to help see who is on strike.
An alert has been created for when the game ends.
Batting and bowling options only appear when you can use them.
Multiplied the strike rate by 100.
Fixed issues with the bowler economy rate.
Added Club, First Class, and Interntional to the Career overview screen
Fixed the gear bag panel.
Re-worked the shop.
Gear replenishes in the shop after each match.
If you cannot afford gear or do not buy new gear it will affect your batting and bowling rating
Cheers folks.
Will post once the next upload goes up. ETA, 30/November/2010.

I played one T20 game, the first dig was a good score of 199. Team batting second was unrealistic though, managed 175/1. I don't know if it's possible but in cases like this, when the end is coming near and wickets is in hand, you can probably have it programmed to hit more runs and take more wickets as well during those parts. Just an idea, I know it's not as easy as how i'm writing it here.

Hey Spin Wizard,
Thanks for the feedback. I have made some changes to the current batting engine so that players will chase better and also make more use of the first 6 overs. Once the new batting and bowling performance engine is finished (we're looking at Jan / Feb 2011) this will be much improved.
Once I upload the new version you should see more wickets fall, and more aggressive batting during the opening and closing overs.
Keep the feedback coming, it's great to have everyones ideas :)

New version of the game uploaded today.
Fixes:
* Updates the career overview screen so that your club summary appears.
* Added in sponsorship, you now get paid for the runs you score and the wickets you take. The details of the sponsorship deal are not currently available but will be in the next release.
* Alert advising when the game has been completed now appears at the end of the game. Further alert boxes will be created over the next few days (End of innings, 50s, 100s etc)
* Remodelled the shop ________________________________________________________________________
Please feel free to suggest priorities that should be worked on within the game. My general plan (along with working on the new batting and bowling engine) is to get a bit more into the game side of things this week (i.e. the alerts, more batting options, more bowling options (i.e. fast, slow ball, off spin, googly etc) as well as finishing off the gear bag and aging of the gear.
Aging of gear: The idea for aging gear is to make it more like a player. So for instance, a bat might break, or gloves might get a hole in them, when gear ages it will decrease in rating points. Except for bats... which will start out weaker, become better when they're broken in, then start to decrease after a certain number of deliveries faced.
Other gear: I will be introducing shoes, helmets, thigh pads, chest guards etc but still have to work out how these items will affect you when playing. All ideas welcome on this.
Feedback is key. You're all tops. tocg

Hey this is great! Very enjoyable so far. I played a trial game and it was realistic for the most part. You seem to be updating pretty quickly too which is great to see.
Just a quick question: We can only play T20s as of now right?
And how do I save my player?
|

|
Hey Dravid Fan.
Thanks for the note :)
At the moment you can only play T20 matches, in future you will be able to play Club: T20, 1 day, and two day matches; First Class: T20, 1 Day, and Four day matches; International: T20, ODI, Test Matches... as well as some tournaments such as the IPL, World Cup etc.
I expect to have the 1 day and 2 day club matches ready by the end of January as there are a couple of things that tie into that (fixtures, proper seasons, competition trophies etc).
Regarding saving your player, you can't do this at the moment but I am getting a lot of requests for this to be added in so I have added it to my priority list and I should be able to have that working within the next week or two... so watch this space on that one.
Thanks for the feedback, i'm glad you're enjoying the game. I have a list of about 300 features that I want to implement (including basic stuff like adding wides, full seasons, full squad details etc) so keep checking the game out as there will be at least 1 new version going up each week.
If you want me to work on certain areas of the game that are annoying you then please let me know as I don't get enough time to do thorough testing at this stage and am relying on folks like yourself to provide feedback and bugs.
Thanks again Dravid Fan ... and good luck for the game today against NZ!

Hey Dravid Fan, good news - I worked on a basic Save and Load game function last night and have got that working.
I haven't uploaded this new feature yet but will do once I iron out a few of the bugs.
At this stage you will be able to save your game from the Home Screen (the screen with your career overview etc), and you can load the game from the initial screen that opens when you start the game.
I need to add in a 'Back to main menu' option which I'll also do before I upload the new version.
Thanks again for the feedback, keep it coming :)

As a bit more info on the save option, everything should now save within the game. i.e. all runs, balls, wickets,50s, 3 wicket bags, players role etc.
The part that isn't fixed is where it comes up with "Unable to save" for some people. I'm working on that though.
Also working on finishing off the seasons, points tables, and fixtures.
At this stage you will still play against the same teams, as in, one from each country, but I'll be implementing the first class teams from each country, and if people want to start putting their club teams forward for the game I'll start adding them to each of the first class regions.
Do you think adding in your real clubs is a good option?
cheers

Hey guys.
I've uploaded a new version of http://www.theonlinecricketgame.com - www.theonlinecricketgame.com tonight.
The new version **should** fix the issues people were having with not being able to save - Please let me know if you can or can't save so I know how that has gone.
I still need to add some parts of the save / load in, especially with the new fixtures as they are not saved at this stage. That will be fixed over the next day or two.
I have added in the Fixtures, Points Table, and (virtual) Seasons. These are just the basics at the moment so you cannot 'win' a season yet. Once you have played all your fixtures some new fixtures will automatically be generated. I will have more done on this by the end of the weekend. Hopefully you will then be able to win a season, play in the semi finals and final.. if you're good enough :p
I have also modified the current batting engine so that there are more singles, less fours, and less dot balls. Feedback on this would be great, I played about 25 games and it looked better than it was previously.
cheers all tocg

Well, so-far it's better.
The save function works, which is good, and I can't find any REAL bugs, except for the fixtures, which doesn't reset at the end of the season until you reload.
Although I always did better with economy when I was being more agressive, which is weird.....

Yeh... The bowling side needs work, in all honesty the aggression does very little and still heavily relies on randomness. This will be fixed with the new batting and bowling perf engine but thanks for the post and if I get a chance I'll see if I can make some tweaks to the current engine.

Hey guys.
The latest version of http://www.theonlinecricketgame.com - www.theonlinecricketgame.com has been uploaded tonight.
The new version features 50/50 matches, as well as updates to the fixtures screen.
Please note: I have also changed the way games are saved. In order for you to load any games you have previously saved you will need to load them through the new load button.
After you re-save the game you can load it from the normal load button.

I am finishing off the saving of the fixtures etc tonight, currently when you load a previously saved game all yoru fixtures will be reset.
If anyone finds any bugs etc please let me know asap... especially around the save options.
Happy to answer any questions, cheers tocg

I've now added in more dismissal types. I still need to work through stumped and also sort out the caught behinds.
I've started tweaking the batting performances so see how you find that. I'm still not happy with it but will continue to work on tweaking that today based on any feedback I get.
I've also fixed up some minor issues, such as the Fall Of Wicket alert box so it displays the correct fall of wicket details, among others.

Alright, I've fooled around as much as possible, and the fixtures seem perfectly alright.
The bowling aggresion has also improved, although my spin bowler isn't quite supposed to average 99 I don't think...
(Bats 9 and keeps scoring 10-20 not out.)
Two bugs:
3fer's are stored in the 4fer column in the STATS screen.
And the advice square in the top left of the HOME screen still says :"Concentrate on taking 25 wickets to solidify your spot in the team." even though I've taken 30.
Good improvements sofar, although what I wouldn't do for an allrounder class.....

Hey folks.
I have modifed the game so now when you start you select your own country, region, and club.
So far I have added the New Zealand teams, New Zealand State Cricket teams (Auckland, Canterbury, Central Districts, Northern Districts, Otago, and Wellington), and added 10 clubs into each region. ... a total of 60 new teams! With about 300 more needed.
I've had to fix up a lot of code to do this, which is a good thing in the long run as it makes the game more flexible, but you will no longer be able to load your old saved games - sorry folks, it's a necessary evil!
I need to add the remaining Regions (i.e. States / Provences) for: Australia India England West Indies Pakistan South Africa Zimbabwe Sri Lanka Bangladesh
I then need to add the regions for each of these countries and then some club teams for each region before you can play as that country/region.
This is quite a job.
I'm looking for help on this as it's taking me away from the coding which is probably more important for me to be spending time on at the moment.
If anyone out there has some time available to fill in some templates for me (players names, team names etc) then PM me and ill send you the template.
All help is appreciated... if I can get 4 or 5 people to help then it will save me a lot of hours and I can spend that time working on the career progression now that the game is setup for it.
I won't upload the new version until I have more teams in there as you would only be able to play as New Zealand teams at the moment.

Hey folks.
I've added a link to www.theonlinecricketgame.com - www.theonlinecricketgame.com which will allow you to download the team template. The link can be found under Team Template on the homepage.
This file has code in it so for this to work only the specified areas in the file should be edited.
At the moment I need club teams, and lots of them. As many club teams as I can get for each region.
When each region has enough club teams I will add that region to the game so you will be able to play as your own club :)
This may be a little confusing so please let me know if anyone needs clarification.
Thanks to all those who are helping out :)

Hey folks.
http://www.theonlinecricketgame.com - The Online Cricket Game now has a team generator.

You can find this under the Team Generator heading on the homepage at http://www.theonlinecricketgame.com - The Online Cricket Game .
When you generate a team a file will be saved to your local machine (note: the location of the file will be displayed at the bottom of the generator once you click "Create Team").
If people have some time, can you generate some teams in your area. Once you have finished generating teams the files need to be sent to theonlinecricketgame@gmail.com.
Please make sure the regions and clubs are real regions and clubs. Any that are not real may not make it into the game.
This will make it easy for me to get bulk club teams into the game, and therefore will let me put the next update online sooner.
If there are any issues with this please let me know.
I have tested it and generated 50+ teams in about 10 minutes :)
Any questions / feedback please let me know.
cheers to all the helpers out there! Without you this game would not be possible.
I will put some details together tomorrow and post so that people know which regions / clubs / countries we need clubs generated for.
*** Also - to those that have replied I appologise for the slack response. I needed to get this done as the flood of clubs coming in was overwhelming.
I will spend some time tomorrow replying to all threads & emails.

Hey guys.
I have uploaded a new test version of the game to http://www.theonlinecricketgame.com - www.theonlinecricketgame.com . The link to launch the game can be found on the homepage under the Test Version heading.
This version currently has the Australian and English clubs available. The remaining clubs should be up by the end of the weekend.
I have disabled the load and save options on this version as the coding for that still needs to be implemented.
New features: Country, Region, and Club team selection Points table
Currently working on: Finalizing the points table (making sure it all works - please post any issues you see with this as I have not been able to do much testing) Adding in semi-finals & finals Adding in First Class career progression
All of these things should be completed within a few days.
I will update the Test Version application link regularly over the next few days as I add in features / fixes.
The previous version is still available through the normal link on the site so you can still load / save any old games that you have been playing.
It would be great if people could try out the test version and let me know what isn't working or what needs some attention.

Hey folks.
There is a new release of http://www.theonlinecricketgame.com - The Online Cricket Game ready for you to test.
The main changes relate to the first effort at implementing the new GUI from AounArts. This will take some time to get right so thanks to AounArts for helping to make it look pretty :yes
The first class career progression should now be working correctly. I have not been able to find a major bug with this over my testing period but please let me know if you find any issues.
The save and load options should now also work no matter where you are up to in the game - again, I haven't been able to find any major bugs so please let me know if you do.
Some screenshots of the first effort at the new GUI are below:

From here I need to fix the way the teams are implemented due to some issues I am having with that. I have all the required teams but need to recode how the teams are selected etc. I'll be adding in more teams over the next week with the hope of having them all in there by the middle of January.
If people can test and advise me how they get on, that would be great.

Hey nice work with the updates. Just wondering where the Test Version link is. I'm probably just unable to notice it. And there seems to be only one country available to choose from (Australia). I think there were more choices before. Also, I was wondering if it is possible to view pitch and overhead conditions before a match and if they apply to the game? .
Thanks

Hey mate,
The test version has now been taken down. It was unstable... very unstable so decided to work on the current version and get that working so just use the normal version from the homepage at http://www.theonlinecricketgame.com - www.theonlinecricketgame.com (click on the logo and it will load the game).
I'm pretty sure the current version is relatively bug free and the load/save works well for batsman, but still needs some work work for the bowlers which I hope to get done over the next couple of days.
I've added England and India to the game today but just finalilzing a few issues with the teams. Check back in a few hours and you'll be able to use Australia, England, and India.
Match conditions don't actually effect anything at the moment. Once the new performance engine is ready the weather and pitch conditions will be available before the toss and will also have an effect the players performances.
I've been working on the new performance engine, but it's an extremely tough job to get right. I hope to have a test version of the performance engine ready over the next few days but it will need a fair amount of testing and refining to get it right.
cheers Dravid Fan,

Sounds good. Good luck with those engines it does sound tough.
By the way, I don't seem to understand how the batting aggression seems to work. My player bats at the same speed early on no matter if I put him defensive or attacking and most players in the game slow down after scoring about 70 runs(after starting off very quickly in all situations).

Hey Dravid Fan,
Apologies for the late reply, been away on holiday :)
Cheers for the luck! Seems like I need it because the engine is proving very tricky..
Your batting aggression works based on your confidence at the crease, your form, and the aggression level you have set. At the moment the difference between each level is small so I understand how you may not be seeing much difference.
I am working on adding in a more complex engine for this, which is part of the batting / bowling performance engine.
I hope to have another update over the next few days that will be better, although it is going to take me a while to get this to an acceptable level.
I'll repost when I've updated it and it would be great if you could let me know if you see any improvement in the engine.
Nice work mate, cheers for the feedback - keep it coming, it's crucial for making the game better.
cheers tocg
