Subject: JP's International Cricket Sim - Season 3...
Date Posted: 05 December 2010 at 11:14am
After the third season was postponed due to a combination of volcanic ash problems, contractual issues and shareholder disputes, South Africa will finally get their chance to make it a hat-trick as JP's International Cricket League returns...

...here's the deal, for those of you who aren't sure how it works:

- You take charge of a national team
- You name a squad to last you through the season
- You pick your team for each Test match
- Winner takes all (exact points system to be decided)

Now, as it's been a while since the last season, I'm pretty sure that the only previously involved managers still around are Sledger (England), Clobber (England A / Scotland) and spin wizard (West Indies A),

I'm thinking of changing the format slightly and having one big league where everybody plays each other home and away so it's up to you if you'd like to take on an A team (that is you pick your squad from what's left after the first-team squad is picked) or a lesser nation.

I'll probably make up the numbers with other squads so there is space for incoming managers and possibly have a lower division.

We'll see how things go - please use this thread for expressing your interest, claiming teams, and asking any questions.

Here's the list of who is involved so far:

England - Sledger
England A - Clobber
West Indies - Spin Wizard
Afghanistan - Abubakar52
Australia - Bladescape
Pakistan - Zuhair Abbasi
India - Sam_Ahmed

India A - Dips_December

You are limited to currently active (i.e not retired or retired from international cricket) players. Players banned by their respective boards/ICC get a clean bill of health from me as there are no drugs or bookmakers involved in the simulator I'm using.

By the way, you are more than welcome to take control of any international side, from the likes of Scotland or Ireland to Namibia or France.

I will happily run England A once again JP, and keep my fingers crossed that Sledger leaves me a few morsels to select.

I'll go back with West Indies A although it will really be the Windies senior team players.  On Second thoughts, I'll take West Indies, forget the A.

There's a buzz up north with the announcement of Sledger's England Squad - some surprising inclusions , not least because of their respective ages !

A. Cook
A. Strauss
J. Trott
K.Pietersen
E.Morgan
I.Bell
P.Collingwood
M.Prior (w/k)
L.Sutton (w/k)
G.Swann
G.Keedy
S.Broad
S.Finn
J.Anderson
C.Tremlett
G.Chappell

The inclusion of Chappell , Keedy and Sutton has absolutely nothing to do with county allegiences !

Sledger, before reading your final line, I was thinking surely it was Lancashire allegience.

I considered him but his Test match record wasn't good enough and would have resulted in him being a far weaker player in the game than he actually is.

hmmmm, I appear to have forgotten Steve Harmison. I think I was so tied up choosing between Allenby and Bresnan before realising I had three keepers, so was relieved I could get both in there and as a result forgot poor old Harmy. Oh well.

hang on hang on, didn't you read The Times today?

Trescothick Back In The Frame

Marcus Trescothick has sensationally gone back on his retirement from international cricket - but only to play for the England A side.

"My good friend Clobber called me and asked me if I would make myself available, and I couldn't say no to him, he's such a great bloke, so I am willing to play for any team that he, and only he, manages".

A delighted Clobber said "Looks like I am not an opener short after all".

The Times understands that no other cricketers around the world will be renouncing their international retirements.

Strange that none of you have room for Raina and Rohit.

Posted By: -JP-
Date Posted: 11 December 2010 at 10:58am
No problem. As we haven't quite got as many managers as we've had before, I'll probably start with the managed teams in a league with other teams playing but just being looked after in case others want to join later.

If I had enough, I'd split into two pools and have quarter-finals, but I think a league of eight to start with should be enough. That way we can get things started before Christmas break.

So...

Division One: Afghanistan, Australia, England, England A, India, India A, Pakistan, West Indies

Division Two: Bangladesh, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Scotland, Kenya

Division Three: Netherlands, Canada, Australia A, South Africa A, New Zealand A, Pakistan A, Sri Lanka A

Division Four: West Indies A, Zimbabwe A, Bangladesh A, Namibia, UAE, Bermuda, Uganda

Any late entries will see these leagues change around a little.

Some fixtures will appear soon.

Zuhair I was going for Raina but Rahane's first class average is 67! Which is why he got the nod and I just simply hate Rohit Sharma! He's an Indian version of Mohammad Ashraful! Tremendous potential but tnohing shown yet in almost 50 matches!

If this game works on FC averages, then I might have a tweak in my side - hope that is allowed.

Posted By: -JP-
Date Posted: 11 December 2010 at 3:15pm
It works on Test averages and 'tweaked' first-class averages -i.e Rahane's average in-game won't be 67 because he hasn't played Tests yet.

Round OneWest Indies v Afghanistan: Chris Gayle becomes the season's first centurion as the West Indies make light work of Afghanistan to complete a ten-wicket win. http://www.originalonion.com/cricketsim/season3/WINAFG.HTM - Scorecard Australia v Pakistan: Australia dominate at home, winning a match initially favouring the bowlers by seven wickets. http://www.originalonion.com/cricketsim/season3/AUSPAK.HTM - Scorecard England v India A: One of the best games in the history of the game. Neither side could really get a grip of the contest, and the match closed as a draw with England four runs short of victory and one wicket remaining. http://www.originalonion.com/cricketsim/season3/ENGINDA.HTM - Scorecard England A v India: A slightly less entertaining draw at Old Trafford, where India batted well into the fifth day in their second innings to guarantee an extra point. http://www.originalonion.com/cricketsim/season3/ENGAIND.HTM - Scorecard Points Table: Australia, West Indies 5 points, India, India A 3 points, England, England A 2 points, Afghanistan, Pakistan 0 points

Unfortunate that Nehra misses out despite being the spearhead but I'm going on form!

Bat first if I win the toss. Sharma and Agarkar opens. Followed by Ashwin, Kartik and Raina. List Tendulkar as the 6th option of possible!

Only four premier bowlers to bowl
Same team

Aus XI:
1.Hughes
2.Watson(b)
3.Katich
4.Ponting(c)
5.M.Hussey
6.M.Clarke
7.Haddin(wk)
8.Johnson(2)
9.S.Clark(b)
10.Hilfenhaus(1)
11.Bollinger(b)

Clarkey returns to displace the disappointing D.Hussey, Katich is also on a very thin cord, and if he disappoints again he will very likely join David in his fate.....

Shame on boring India for being scared to make a game of it against us. Hopefully their A side will show a little more ambition.

Gale
Davies
Bopara
Taylor
McGrath
Hildreth
Rashid
Shahzad
Hoggard
Jones
Panesar

I will bat on winning the toss, and if possible set it so that McGrath is the 6th bowler since I see he bowled ahead of Rashid last time.

I have still to decide on a replacement for Tresco in the squad.

But Clobs when Zaheer Khan ends up playing 225 balls, there is something not right with the attack. Maybe another seamer in your side would do you good.

ah! no aggression levels this time, seriously I'd have called Zaheer back if he was batting so slowly. Disappointed that we couldn't win. Munsf wasn't up to the mark and I may have to re-consider my bowling lineup but I'll wait for spinny to give me pitch & conditions first.

very happy with Gauti and VVS ... well done boys

Ah, so close yet so far.  Same team again JP.

It works if you pick in form players and drop those who are not performing as their confidence levels will be low. You'd be better off dropping Azhar and picking another batsmen, just my advice though!

Just started running the matches in Division Two, and a couple of highlights below:

South Africa bat, and bat, and bat, and then bat some more, and then just for the hell of it, bat a bit longer against Ireland: http://www.originalonion.com/cricketsim/season3/SA.HTM - Scorecard

Bangladesh turn New Zealand over: http://www.originalonion.com/cricketsim/season3/BAN.HTM - Scorecard

I forgot to save the scorecard, but Sri Lanka chased down 430 to beat Ireland by two wickets in a thriller

Results so far:

R1: Bangladesh beat Kenya by one wicket, New Zealand beat Scotland by an innings and 68 runs, South Africa beat Ireland by an innings and 586 runs, Sri Lanka beat Zimbabwe by eight wickets

R2: Kenya drew with Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka beat Ireland by two wickets, South Africa beat Scotland by 276 runs, Bangladesh beat New Zealand by 97 runs

Points: Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, South Africa 10 points, New Zealand 5, Zimbabwe, Kenya 3, Ireland 1, Scotland 0

I don't think they've taken too kindly for being 'relegated' having won the previous two seasons!

Division Three will get underway when Canada and West Indies A turn up, hopefully later today.

Nehra in for Kartik. That's the only change. Ishant, Agarkar, Nehra, Ashwin and Tendulkar to bowl!

A fivefer for Keedy in his 1st test and then he only gets to bowl 2 overs in the 2nd dig - what you playing at Straussy ?  I'll have a think before picking a side for the next match (actually I don't know who we're playing and I'll have to go have a look - professional huh !)

I've run these next round of matches seeing as I'm snowed in and can't go home...

Australia prove to be too strong for the West Indies with Simon Katich and Ben Hilfenhaus on top form: http://www.originalonion.com/cricketsim/season3/20DEC1.HTM - Scorecard

England outclass Afghanistan at Old Trafford - honest!

Pakistan close 13 runs short of victory as their match against England A was drawn. They had taken a big first-innings lead but bad weather scuppered their chances of outright victory. Unfortunately I've lost the scorecard! http://www.originalonion.com/cricketsim/season3/20DEC2.HTM - Scorecard

India showed the strength to beat India A with Zaheer Khan and Irfan Pathan particularly impressive. http://www.originalonion.com/cricketsim/season3/20DEC4.HTM - Scorecard

Points: Australia 15, India 13, England 12, India A 8, West Indies 5, England A, Pakistan 4, Afghanistan 0

Meanwhile, in Division Two, New Zealand beat Kenya by 7 wickets, South Africa thump Bangladesh by 316 runs, Sri Lanka hammer Scotland by an innings and 223 runs before Ireland and Zimbabwe play out an evenly match draw.

Points: South Africa, Sri Lanka 15, Bangladesh, New Zealand 10, Zimbabwe 6, Kenya, Ireland 3, Scotland 0

Time for the Christmas break - the sim will return in the New Year!

JP, you didn't lose the Pakistan/England A scorecard, it's in the Afghan/England link.

For the next game Azhar replaced by Asad Shafiq.

Win the toss bat at National Stadium Karachi. Pitch green top, fast and bouncy.

Sorry about that - counting to two always a bit tricky. I'd hold off naming teams just yet as I'll bring injuries into play in the New Year.
