ASHLEY Giles today admitted he is “extremely disappointed” by Younis Khan’s decision to tour the West Indies with Pakistan in April and May, ruling the player out of Warwickshire’s line-up for the first six weeks of the 2011 season.

And a big question mark now hangs over whether the former Pakistan captain will join the Bears at all, having dropped a wrecked the county’s planning even before setting foot inside Edgbaston.

Ever since signing a two-season deal as Warwickshire’s overseas player early in the winter, Khan had insisted that he would be available for all their matches during those seasons. That was reiterated personally by the player to director of cricket Giles as recently as last month.

Such a pledge was a pleasant surprise for the Bears, Khan having patched up his differences with the Pakistan Cricket Board and returned to his national team’s fold. But, the contract having been signed, Warwickshire took him at his word.

Then last week came a king-sized u-turn by the 33-year-old. He announced his intention to be with Pakistan in the Caribbean this spring so his declaration that he will be with the Bears in time for the championship opener against Somerset at Taunton has turned out to be hogwash.

Why should Giles be disappointed?  Is he nuts?  Who'd not go on an international tour to play county games?  Probably only Marcus Trescothick but he has more than good reasons to.

Probably because he signed a contract and gave his word? Then again, contracts are worthless these days, but your word is oak!? Maybe i'm just old fashioned?Wink

At that time Younis probably thought he'd never play for Pakistan again.  But, we all on this forum knew that a ban in Pakistan doesn't mean anything more than just a temporary hot topic in the press!

Somerset v Bears

Varun Chopra completed a superb double century for Warwickshire on the second morning, continuing in the same vein as on the opening day.

There was a fifteen minute delay for rain but the overnight pair of Chopra and Woakes continued from where they had left off the previous evening, completing their century partnership while Varun Chopra passed the double century landmark for the first time in his career.

He was evntually out, lbw to Mendis for 210 but Chris Woakes 94* continued to play in a forceful manner, completing his half century and with Ant Botha 17* took the Bears to lunch on 543-7 having added one hundred and twenty seven runs in the session.

Woakes quickly completed his fourth career century after the break and added one hundred and ten for the eighth wicket with Botha before he drove to Kirby for 129.

Botha was last out for a useful sixty four as the Bears recorded their highwst total for fifteen year and the sixth highest ever when closing on 642.

In reply Somerset survived nine testing overs to go to tea on thity seven without loss.

Andrew Miller struck in the first over after the interval when Marcus Trescothick's outside edge flew to Darren Maddy at slip and the Somerset skipper went for eighteen before a useful partnership between Suppiah and Compton added seventy three before a full blooded cut from Suppiah 62 was well taken in the gulley by Chopra to the batsman's disbelief.

Chris Woakes then joined in, taking the wickets of Compton lbw for eighteen and then the prized scalp of James Hildreth, playing on for just five with Somerset 123-4.

More success came in the next over when Clarke collected a second wicket as Buttler edged to Rich Johnson, keeping for the injured Ambrose, without scoring and then Kieswetter, nine picks Clarke out in the slips to give Woakes a third wicket  after Trego had been put down in the slips in the same over.

Bad light brought an end to proceedings with seven overs left in the day and Somerset on 147-6 still trailing by 495 runs.

Nice for Woakes, that's two hundreds in his last few knocks after one for the England Lions, I would say doing well for the full national side with the bat has given him a real surge of confidence.

Record breaking Warwickshire beat Somerset by an innings and 382 runs at Taunton after lunch on the third day, the sixth-largest margin of defeat in the history of the County Championship and the largest since 1921. It was also Somerset's largest defeat since 1895.

What a start to the seasonBig%20smile......Long live the 'King of Spain'.Clap

There's all sorts of interesting achievements being made in the Leics game today, admittedly only against Loughborough. James Taylor has completed his 3rd FC double century, having only just turned 21. 17 year old prospect Shiv Thakor, who has been with the club since under 11's, has a century in his first FC innings, and the pair's partnership is currently at 321, the county's 7th highest of all time for any wicket.

Date Posted: 20 April 2011 at 6:58pm
Taylor wound up with 237, his highest career score so far. Thakor made 134 and is now Leics' youngest ever centurian. Their partnership of 330 is the county's highest ever for the 5th wicket, and 6th highest overall.

Impressive stuff. England's batting has looked the best it has in a long time I reckon. Trott has been absolutely fantastic and Cook's return to form in the Ashes has been a blessing. Won't hurt to have a new young star in the wings like Taylor, especially with Collingwood now retired in test cricket. Does the kid bowl at all by any chance?

Cook's Ashes form has been carried over into the county championship Mikey - another hundred yesterday. Young Taylor just seems to get better and better Clobs - he has a real appetite for runs doesn't he.

Taylor does bowl legbreaks as it happens, but only very occasionally, and not especially consistently! He is also brilliant in the field.
I don't think he will be in England contention this year, with Morgan, Bopara and probably Hildreth all ahead of him in the queue, but I am pretty sure his time will come

Probably safe that he's not thrown into the deep end too early, but if this kid has the temperament to make that many big scores then it shows that he's got a pretty mature, level head on his shoulders (although Vinod Kambli made a couple of 200 in tests for India and didn't even make it to 20 tests). We talk a lot about converting starts into 100s, but it's nice to see guys converting 100s into BIG 100s. That's a very important component of any top order batsman's game.

I tell you what Clobber, another bloke by the name of Brian Lara had a knack of making 200s, was a brilliant catcher and bowled occasional leg breaks

Cook has been a revelation, I can envisage him being the England test captain next summer or the summer after too. Although Strauss impressed in the Ashes too! (Unfortunately for Australia !)

A ton for Ravi Bopara today, he is in good form just at the right moment, and the press seem to think he is currently leading the race to take over Collingwood's spot in the Test team.

The Sri Lankan's tour match with the Lions is likely to be interesting as all the main candidates (Bopara, Morgan, Hildreth and Taylor) are set to play in that game. It looks like one of them may have to open the batting though.

Other notable selections for the Lions are the returning Graham Onions, and Samit Patel appears to finally have been forgiven for being a bit lardy.

Read Yousuf scored a marvelous ton on a horrible pitch. One that Ashley Giles called the 'best that he saw'. Pity he is not in the West Indies representing Pakistan.

Warwickshire have been docked eight County Championship points after their Edgbaston pitch used for the Worcestershire match was rated "poor".

An England & Wales Cricket Board panel comprising David Hughes and Tony Pigott ruled the pitch had demonstrated "excessive unevenness of bounce."

Worcestershire batsman Vikram Solanki was taken to hospital after being hit on the head by a delivery in the game.

The panel had already convened to look at the pitch before Solanki was struck.

Hughes had arrived at Edgbaston on Thursday to take a look at the strip and in Friday's shortened, rain-hit third day 12 wickets fell.

The deduction means Warwickshire now have 45 points, though the Bears could offset that by going on to win the match.

After declaring on 173-8, having not enforced the follow-on, Warwickshire had the visitors on 36-3 before rain stopped play.

Why have they let play to carry on if the pitch has been deemed dangerous to play on.  Hoping well for Solanki.

Yousuf scored a ton in the first inning and a nearly run-a-ball 68 in the second. And some other guy also scored a fifty. So the pitch was probably not as horrible or it was just a masterpiece from Yousuf. Were the days of uncovered pitches any easier? Maybe some of the older guys can help me out here.

Andrew Strauss had his first hit of the year today, making 151 against the Sri Lankan tourists - he's a class act Straussy, who I don't think gets as much respect for his batting as he deserves.

By most accounts, Yousuf's knocks were exceptional with many saying that was the worst pitch they've ever seen in county cricket.

On another theme from above, I see James Taylor as a future England regular and probable captain - but not for a few years yet.

Yousuf's knock was a gem , by all accounts.  On surfaces that are well below that expected in 1st class cricket it's the batsmen with the soundest technique who come through. Shot selection is crucial too , especially shots fraught with danger are no-nos and put to bed.

One to keep an eye on guys

CRICKET'S rising star Chris Metters has been dubbed the 'Ice Man' after his dream debut for Warwickshire against Worcestershire in the LV County Championship.

Metters, the former Exmouth cricketer and Exeter City Academy scholar, took six wickets for 65 runs on his First Class bow as Worcestershire were bowled out for 228 in their first innings last week.

They were the best figures ever posted by any Warwickshire bowler on his First Class debut.

Warwickshire went on to win by 218 runs and had victory almost in the bag before the 20-year-old left-armer got on to bowl again.

And with 27 not out in Warwickshire's first innings, to add to his wickets, it was a debut performance to savour.

Ashley Giles, the former England spinner and Ashes winner in charge of cricket at Warwickshire, thinks Metters is a cool customer with the right attitude to First Class cricket.

"We are very impressed with him – his temperament is fantastic," Giles said.

"We have not known him for long, but in the short space of time he has been here he struck me how cool he is and that he just gets on with things.

"He's very similar to Neil Smith, someone I played a lot of cricket with.

"He's very calm, almost an ice man in the way that he doesn't get flustered and just gets on with things."

Giles himself knows a thing or two about spin bowling, having taken 143 wickets in his 43 Test matches and a First Class total of 539 costing less than 30 apiece.

And he has been impressed with Metters' approach. "It's early days for him. He's got a lot to learn and he's still learning about spin bowling," Giles said.

"But he has got a lot of the elements you are looking for. He spins it, he looks quite economical and simple, he drops the ball quite quickly and he learns quickly.

"He doesn't seem to get flustered. He's got a quicker ball and good variations of pace, which probably comes from having bowled seamers.

"All that together makes him interesting. He worked on a new run-up last week and this was the first game that he really tried it in. He was walking in and he was losing a bit of rhythm doing that.

"Now he's trotting in. He got a bit tight on the front foot and he was no balled a couple of times.

"It worries you that it might put him off, but he settled in quickly and it's nice to see a youngster come in and do so well on his debut.

"He's learning his trade so hopefully I can help him with the tacticals and technicals."

Graham Napier and Chris Wright just put on 190 for the 9th wicket for Essex against Surrey - Wright made 34 of them! Napier is having one of his on days and has hit 16 sixes so far in 196 off 129 balls. I guess he'll start hitting out now the No 11 is in LOL

Talk about a jinx - out to the next ball he faced!

Meanwhile Bopara and Morgan are in what the press are dubbing a straight shoot out for the No 6 slot in the Test team during the Lions match with SL. Bopara has already missed out, having gone in at 3.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, someone had to bat out of position to open the innings since they only picked one opener, and as is the way of things, it was the youngest man, James Taylor, who got lumbered, but to his credit he is scrapping away and is currently 46*.

Bopara for my money since he has stayed at home and found form in the First Class game while Morgan opted to boost his bank account instead.

Morgan's unbeaten 156 may have set the cat among the pigeons as far as Test selection goes.

Samit Patel also has an unbeaten century to his name so you can expect to see him straight back into England's one day sides, so long as he looks after his fitness properly this time, taking over the Michael Yardy role: he is a far better batsman than Yardy, so that should work well.

Taylor did well too, with 76, and making those at the time in the day when scoring runs was at its most difficult.

Some one else having a good day with a good ton by all accounts.

Warwickshire’s stand-in skipper Ian Bell enjoyed a near faultless day as the visitors moved into a position of total dominance against LV= County Championship leaders Nottinghamshire.

England batsman Bell hit his 34th first-class hundred to lead Warwickshire to 376 all out and then watched as Boyd Rankin and Darren Maddy shared three wickets apiece to bowl out Nottinghamshire for 117 in their first innings

After Bell had opted to enforce the follow-on, the giant Rankin subsequently added another three victims in 10 balls as the hosts crashed to 60 for four at the close, still 199 behind and staring at their first innings defeat since 2009.

Stuart Broad, who removed Bell for 139, top-scored in Notts’ first innings with 24, but was one of 14 home wickets to fall in the space of 41 overs.

Warwickshire resumed on 233 for three this morning and lost Mohammad Yousuf in the second over of the day as Andre Adams produced a neat pick-up and throw off his own bowling to run out the Pakistan batsman.

England spinner Graeme Swann struck in his first over when Maddy edged his arm-ball to slip, but Bell held firm and brought up his century with a drive through the covers.

Rikki Clarke fell with an edged drive to first slip on the stroke of lunch before the last four Warwickshire wickets fell within five overs during the afternoon session.

Tim Ambrose was lbw to Adams and Naqaash Tahir edged his first ball to third slip to become the New Zealander’s third victim.

Broad then picked up the last two wickets as he had Chris Metters caught at short-leg before Bell holed out to mid-on hitting out in pursuit of a final batting point.

Bell’s thoughtful captaincy then paid off as Notts were bowled out in 37.3 overs, although at least six batsmen were culpable in their dismissals with a succession of poor shots.

Tahir removed openers Akhil Patel and Mark Wagh before Steven Mullaney hooked Rankin straight to long-leg.

Ali Brown was bowled through the gate by Maddy, who then trapped Paul Franks lbw after Adam Voges had sliced Clarke to gully.

Maddy picked up his third wicket after tea when Notts skipper Chris Read provided the bowler with a return catch and both Swann and Adams departed in tame fashion before Broad’s brief resistance was ended with a thin edge off Clarke.

Things got no better for Notts in the second innings. Patel was caught behind off Tahir’s third ball and the fiery Rankin bounced out Mullaney, Wagh and Brown in the space of two overs.

With two days still to play and a fair weather forecast, it will take a remarkable effort for Notts to avoid a second successive championship defeat.

Things is Clobs, if Taylor does TOO well then he will be blooded into the test side too early... might not be a good thing!
England will go with Morgan, especially since he has been favoured on the last few tours. Bopara will be a regular in limited overs cricket methinks for some time though. His chance will come up eventually. Batting stocks looks good for England, nothing too lacklustre about their options.

I don't think Morgan will play Mikey , Bopara's bowling will give him the edge.  Flower was also impressed that he turned down big money in the IPL to play county cricket - something that Morgan didn't do.  The bowling after lunch yesterday was hardly first class - Dilshan took the new ball himself !  As Clobs has pointed out , Taylor impressed when the ball was seaming and swinging - he has a fine technique by all accounts.

Well Morgan has been picked in the end, and will play. Finn has been given the nod over Shahzad too, but is unlikely to be selected, and the team will, barring injuries, almost certainly be -

Strauss, Cook, Trott, Pietersen, Bell, Morgan, Prior, Broad, Swann, Anderson, Tremlett

Steady on JP , I can't remember a season where Lancashire have started so fantastically!    Apparently England is in for it hottest summer since records started - I just hope the north west gets a fair share of it and then we'll get this 70-odd year monkey off our backs.

So Morgan gets a start , which leaves the attack looking a little thin.  KP and Trott can turn their arms over , but are hardly going to scare the Lankans.   It seems that Flower and Strauss aren't convinced about Bopara's temperament - something that can't be levelled at Morgan.  With 7 tests this summer , Bopara might still get a go and who knows , maybe alongside Morgan rather than in his place. Let's face it , even KP isn't bulletproof - not the way he's been shaping over the last two years.

one man who is always omitted from Pakistani team despite never having been involved in any controversy, any wrong doings, any mis conducts... nothing... is Abdul Razzaq, he was not even out of form because he was hardly getting a chance coming in at No.8 and bowling 3-4 overs!!!!

Razzaq has to be the poorest guy around!

well, what a debut from Razzaq, despite only arriving in the country yesterday. When he batted he was scratchy early on and the target mounted to 63 from 24 balls. Not a problem for Razzaq, as he clattered 25 off the next over and kept pulling out the sixes, and with the help of Wayne White, who produced a couple of mighty ones himself, they even got there with a ball to spare. 62* off 30 balls for Razzaq.

ps take that Sledger!

Razzaq should have been West Indian - Dwayne Bravo gets more playing time than the guy and aint even half as good as Razzaq is!

I watched it live on TV - and he wasn't even at his best, but still hit them huge.  When Razzaq hit one in the air - Bumble said on air, "don't catch it please" - everyone knew the game is alive till Razzaq is there and he lived to his billing yet again. What  a pity, Pakistan think he is not good anymore. It is actually the Pakistan cricket that is not good anymore.

Will be following the tournament,a s I am keen to follow the progress of other Pakistan players like Rana and Junaid Khan too.

that is the thing about him - even when it was 63 off 24 balls needed, I was still confident that the target was attainable so long as he was still at the crease.

What more do you expect from a guy named 'Butt'(Just A Joke). He thinks through his namesake and sits on his head. He's got to go, for Pakistan cricket to move forward( lost count of the number of times that almost everyone has suggested the same).

Been like that for a while Clobs. Definitely had some treatment done because he was BALD as!

Take a look at Sehwag as well, he was going completely bald and now he's got a very solid patch of hair.
Apparently Sehwag got treatment done by some hair clinic in India and is their spokesman, a bit like Shane Warne and Graham Gooch over here.

Bollinger was also completely bald too, now he has a good crop of hair haha.

What a show by Riaz and Mehmood!!! Wahab Riaz was on a double hat trick and had a chance to bowl at Murali - and just when I thought Azhar has finished - he scored a marvelous ton!!

Azhar has always been a class act, genuine all-rounder. A bit like James Hopes, not brilliant at either discipline, but always tries his best and when he hits some rhythm he's a handful. Can take bags of wickets, open the bowling and bat anywhere in the order. He's a good guy to have in the team and I always felt both he and Razzaq could play in the same side... but the selectors never seemed to think that. Another wasted cricket, put his name next to Saqlain Mushtaq.

Razzaq and Azhar did play together for a good 3-4 years under Wasim and Waqar. Azhar lost his touch and the emergence of Malik also made it difficult for him. He was nonetheless a god enough player.

I went up to Grace Road today to watch Leics take on Worcester in the T20. My 2 boys had been offered the chance to be part of the guard of honour, so we made it a family outing.

It was a reasonable enough match, with notable events including Hoggard sweeping a 6 first ball he received off Saeed Ajmal, en route to a scintillating 10* off 2 balls, and a couple of exceptional catches by Harry Gurney and Wayne White as the Foxes won easily enough.

Afterwards it was good to see the Leics players making the effort to connect with the young supporters, coming right back out of the dressing room to sign autographs and pose for photos. This led to a priceless moment when a steward noticed my 5 year old daughter standing with a pen and paper in her hand, which she had been using to draw on for her own amusement. Not realising this, he very kindly ushered her forward to meet James Taylor, leading to a rather bemused batsmen confronted by an even more bemused little girl!

Unsurprisingly, Razzaq was the one most people wanted to meet though.

Interesting performances in Gloucestershire's T20 match with Middlesex yesterday, when both Kevin O'Brien and Hamish Marshall made centuries for Gloucs, which I think is probably the first time that has happened.

I hope someone puts the slower ball that Razzaq bowled tonight up on YouTube - it was so slow and loopy that Rich Pyrah managed to pretty much play 2 different shots to it, and missed with both!

ps Warwickshire can sod off - they are nothing but the Surrey of the Midlands, the totally classless way they seek to unsettle players under contract to other teams.

A great weekend for Lancashire as they beat the old enemy , Yorkshire by 23 runs and Somerset surprised Durham. So just 5 points behind Durham with a game in hand - can this be the year when the title goes to the finest county in the country ?

Lancashire versus Notts at Southport today , huge match !  The lads are just 5 points behind Durham with this game in hand - even a high scoring draw will take them top , but they'll be going flat out for victory!
I have great memories of Southport - we went there back in 1960 and I saw Sooty and Sweep - memorable !!

What a seesaw affair at Southport folks !   Notts won the toss and decided to bat , a decision that looked dodgy after slumping to 69-7 !!    In that collapse they went from 27-1 to 27-5 , sheesh !!     The tail wagged though and they got to 203 before the last wicket fell.  The same thing happened against Yorkshire last week , but Lancashire did prevail.
In reply Lancashire started confidently and reached 67 without loss , a terrific start!  Typically it didn't last and on a pitch where wickets fell in clumps , they were reduced to 76-4 by the close !
Obviously this is a result wicket  , but Lancashire are a long , long way from being on the right side of that result !

The Lancs - Yorks game was remarkable too, not least when Yorks somehow got themselves into a dominant position briefly after having been 45-8 in their first innings.

Posted By: Sledger

So Lancashire's return to Southport ends in a heavy defeat by Nottinghamshire.  More importantly , they only picked up 3 points from the game and so are still 2 points behind Durham after the same number of matches.  What was impressive was the crowd on each day of the match , some 2,500 every day , which on such a small ground looked filled to capacity.   Good to see that numbers are increasing in county championship matches.
It's not a fatal blow to Lancashire's chances , but it was a missed opportunity and they'll need to bounce back quickly or it could be yet another season of "what might have beens".

Yes Clobs and apparently the players were given a standing ovation at the conclusion of the match. That's remarkable because a Yorkshire crowd historically isn't very friendly to a visiting Red Rose team !

Paul Nixon has announced he will retire from all forms of cricket after Leics' T20 quarter final with Kent on Saturday - he has decided he simply isn't able to his fitness levels to the standard he wants them - mind you this is a guy who I would bet is fitted than 95% of cricketers around the world, even at 40%, but his standards are so high he has decided if he can't maintain them, it is time to go.

No mention of the titanic battle going on at Liverpool Flipper ?   Warwickshire managed a 91 run lead after 1st innings , but Lancashire have reduced that by 32 before the close and still have 10 wickets left.   Mahmood bowled 12 no balls in that innings and that included a wicket that went awol. He's always been susceptible to no balls and until that gets sorted he'll stay way down the pecking order for England.
Warwaickshire won't want to chase anything over 200 with spin becoming a major factor. The bad news for Lancashire is the weather forecast for tomorrow is rotten ! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Lancashire had a fine day yesterday and ended up on 374-9 , a lead of 283 runs.  Star of the day though was Rikkie Clark , who took SEVEN outfield catches to equal the world record for non-wicketkeeping catches in an innings.  If he takes the last one today , he'll have the record outright and will equal the great Wally Hammond's TEN catches in a match for an outfielder which he set way back in 1928 !!
6 of those catches were taken at 2nd slip - that's unusual in itself !

I fancy Lancashire to win this , but the weather could ruin it.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr  the weather did intervene and plenty of time was lost. Lancashire needed two wickets for the win when the match finished , Warwickshire had no chance of winning.
It's tight at the top and Warws will be much happier with the draw. Durham can stretch their lead if they win their match against Nottinghamshire that's in day 3 now.

A fabulous win for the Leicester Foxes tonight in the T20 quarter finals. I was getting mightily fed up during the Kent innings as Azhar (91 off 52) and Van Jaarsveld (63* off 32) lashed it to all parts, reaching a daunting 203 for 3.

I figured that someone would have to make an 80 or 90 odd for Leics to have a chance but instead guys just kept coming out and blasting 20 or so in no time then getting out, and between them they somehow got the job done so well, aided by the fact that Kent's 3 international seamers, Azhar, Langeveldt and Wahab for the most part bowled a pile of filth, conceding 134 off 10.2 overs between them.

I am not one to tempt fate but as soon as this draw was made, my mind was cast back to the last time Leics won the T20 in 2006.....when they won a home quarter final on that occasion....against Kent.

After day 1 at Blackpool against Worcestershire they posted 288 all out and have the visitors reeling on 77-5 (they were 21-5 !!).  It's a great position to be in and they must go for the jugular today after 15 wickets fell on day 1.

awesome awesome awesome semi win for Leics - this despite literally everything that could have gone against them going against them, including some rather dubious officiating. The rain too seemed to make it impossible, not least when Lancs were left 27 off 17 balls with 9 wickets in hand and none of Leics main bowlers being allowed to bowl having all bowled 2/3 overs, so 2 part timers had to defend 17 off the last 2 overs. Somehow Cobb and White did that, leaving Lancs 7 to win off 1 ball...which disappeared out of the park. A tie! Super over!

Claude Henderson then showed the value of class and experience under huge pressure, after the first ball of the super over was hit for 6, bowling dot balls off the 5th & 6th deliveries to limit the score to 13, which the giant Will Jefferson chased down with a ball to spare.

Either Somerset or Hants will be hot favourites for the final, but after coming through all this, Leics have to keep backing themselves.

Date Posted: 27 August 2011 at 6:30pm
blimey, another super over in the second semi after a spectacular implosion by Somerset, who only needed 5 off the last over and managed just 4....happily for them they have Afonso Thomas to bowl their super over and he is pretty much unhittable, so they go through.

JP v Clobber in the final!

I would have preferred Hants to be honest, the Somerset batting line up is just fearsome.
