VVS Laxman announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect today. He said its time to give the youngsters a chance at home before they go on tours abroad. Fair call I guess. The pressure was mounting on him to go and while he probably could have played a game in front of his home crowd before quitting, he chose not to do so.
Probably the most elegant and stylish middle order batsman India produced. Scored runs in crucial circumstances and took the team out of trouble. The 281 at Eden Gardens instilled belief in the team! And its a knock which people will remember for ages!
He will play for Hyderabad this season in Ranji trophy cricket and ends his career with 8781 test runs from 134 tests.
Farewell VVS! You were a tremendous player and an even better person. Thanks for the memories Smile

ahhh what a player, always a joy to watch

I have no doubt related this before, but the finest innings I have ever seen in person was in a knockabout T20 match between Leicester and Lashings, when VVS made 50 off 25 balls without once looking like he was playing remotely aggressively, and making the partner he was batting with look like little more than an uncultured slogger - no mean feat considering his partner was no less a player than Herschelle Gibbs.

Wonderful player and the man responsible for making several captains think twice before enforcing the follow-on since those days in 2001.

Such an understated cricketer. He will prove as hard to replace as Dravid and Ganguly; how many times was it him that took on the responsibility of closing out Test matches?

Also one of a select group to have played more than 100 Tests but never featured at a World Cup.

Yes, wonderful player esp. against Australian attack ... such was his appetite against them, maybe he was always pushed to the limits by them, maybe he liked the ball coming on to the bat as they were considerably quicker, or maybe just he liked those kind of pitches and attack. He appreciated their attack and they appreciated his batting skills.

Anyway a great career has come to an end on a happy note, his excellence in pressure and second innings was massive.

He has made the right decision,I wish him all the best for his future.

VVS, what a player, always fun to watch with his elegant batting.  Summed up pretty well by everyone already.  A fine ambassador to the sport also like Rahul Dravid.  He brought India through in crisis time, he would be hard to replace!
