There's sort of a close one between Inzamam and Ponting...but at the end I'd go with Inzamam...even though Ponting is slightly better (as a batsman skipper).

even though both are highly qualified and rated batsmen and skipper i think the more likely winner will be the big man inzy. his batting is simply superb and he has hold pakistan team in such a way that they improved from almost 0 to 10. pakistan were collapsing after world cup 1999 but after inzy captained the side, they improved a lot even though they had lots of youngser playing. but ricky was simply replacing one of the greatest captain of all time who helped to build a perfect team. even though it wasnot that easy for ponting i think it was much more difficult for inzy to captain a side and be successful

Gota agree with you on that. Inzamam has captained a bunch of amateurs but he has transformed those amateurs into a hardworking, and team-committed bunch of cricketers.

True. Ponting's form in the Test arena has been simply outstanding. He just keeps getting better and better. But he doesn't bat under as much pressure as Inzamam does.
Inzamam has also been in great form with the bat...though not as good as Ponting. The reason for that could be that he almost always has to bat under pressure. He knows that his failure could mean the failure of the team. He knows that his failure could change the result of the match. When Inzamam fails, most of the times the rest of the batting order just gets ripped apart as well. But when Inzamam does well, which is almost always, the rest of the team is confident that they can do well. Inzamam is almost as good as Ponting currently in batting.
And he is certainly a better skipper than Ponting, so that leads to me to conclude that he is a better batting/skipper than Ponting.
The reason why I say that Inzamam is a better skipper than Ponting is that they both lead completely different teams. Ponting took over from a great captain -Steve Waugh- who had made the Australian team nearly perfect. Ponting leads a bunch of high class players...Gilchrist, Hayden, McGrath, Warne, etc., etc. They are the ones that are responsible for the success of the Australian team...not the captaincy of Ponting.
Inzamam on the other hand leads a bunch of amateur youngsters. And before Inzamam was made skipper, the Pakistan side had already gone through a lot of twists and turns, so it wasn't easy taking over as captain. He took a Pakistan team that was completely hopeless until he was made captain. He took this bunch of hopeless, amateur youngsters and he turned them into a bunch of hardworking, committed, and collective cricketers. He has made the Pakistan team a top team.

IN my opinion it is : -
- Ricky Ponting
- Graeme Smith
- Inzamam ul-Haq
- Rahul Dravid
- Michael Vaughan
- Shiv Chanderpaul
- Marvan Attapatu
- Stephen Fleming (Because of his conversion rate of 50's to 100's, extremely poor)
- & 10., who cares

Not really, haveyou seen him play when in form, he has more skill then Inzi and is much better in my opinion, you may say that he is playing bad now and has not got passed 41 in one match this tour but he is only 24 and is young and not many have done this well so early in their career, Sachin pops into mind but not too many others, plus he has the burden of captaincy at this point of time. Inzi has been in worse slumps and at least Smith is fit and can actually run and field and even help out with the ball, I do not particulary like Smith what so ever but he is good no doubt.

i agree with you saad. even though smith his young and a good captain he certain comes below inzy coz inzy is lot more experience and smith has a lot more to learn. moreover he also has to develop more as a captain as well.

Surely Ponting is a great captain and a superstar batsman but Inzi also is not left far behind coz his captaincy has really improved from 2004 uptil now and the new name 4 him SHOCK ABSORBER really suits him as he really saves the match in the time of need . He is really a great batsman, an excellent captain and a very very fine human being.

You do realise that the whole "Inzy don't perform and Pakistan Lose" thing is a load of BS.... did they not just Hammer India in the final test with Inzy. And is it just me or is Younis and Mohammed yousef to extremely talented batsmen that Pakistan ALSO seem to rely on a lot...
The whole pressure thing is bull as well saad. If inzy doesn't perform, chances are Younis Kahn, Mohammed Yousif, Salman, or Akmal will, so please don't dribble on about "Inzy knows if he don'st perform they will lose....yada yada yada" because well all know its not true. In the SA series, if ponting didn't perform, chances are SA would have won the 3rd test, maybe even the series....
You also said it's not ponting captaincy thats winning them games, its the other players ??? pfffffffft take ponting out of the game and see how Aust. performs. He is the Greatest ever No.3 in the game... Captaincy is more than just decide to bat/bowl first, and deciding where to position the field. It's also leading by example, it's knowing when to put warne in the attack, or knowing that this batsmen has a weakness against fast short pitched bowling.....
That all being said, i think it's quite clear taht ponting is the best batting skipper atm.
p.s. why is tressy up there ????????? lol i think you will find that Michael Vaughn is the pommie captain

So you're saying that Pakistan win when Inzamam doesn't perform. Tell me one thing...do Yousuf and Younis perform as consistently as Inzamam. NO!!! Younis is Bradman against India but he doesn't do a thing against other teams. Yousuf is a fine batsman and performs quite consistently but not as consistently as Inzamam. Inzamam is the best Pakistani batsman and the most relied on Pakistani batsman as well. You Know it! When Inzamam doesn't perform, you know and I know, that the spirit of the Pakistan team is not high and they are feeling pressured. Yousuf and Younis don't always rescue us. They do rescue us at times but not always. When Inzamam performs, most of the times Pakistan wins...his record shows that...the record which is only second to Bradman's. 17 of Inzi's 25 Test centuries have come in Pakistani wins. That's only bettered by the Don!

The pressure thing is bull? Are you out of your mind?? You know very well that Inzamam is by far the best batsman in the world under pressure. Ponting kisses Inzamam's feet when playing under pressure. Inzamam's has saved Pakistan on countless occassions. He has won games for us that seemed impossible to win...like the 1992 World Cup Semi-final. Inzamam's performance is the most important to the Pakistan team. You know it. If Inzamam's wicket falls early, the whole team spirit gets low and they feel the pressure. How many times have Yousuf, Younis, and Akmal saved us. They have saved us, especially Akmal...he's saved us on quite a lot of occassions, but none of them have played as many match winning innings as the big man.

No doubt Ponting leads from the front. He makes good decisions. But he also leads a bunch of star players. When his star players don't perform...he sometimes loses...uhum...The Ashes! Gilly and Hayden have a poor time...Ponting captaining under pressure...he screws up...Australia go home crying!
Inzamam leads from the front. He makes the right decisions. And on top of that he leads a bunch of amateur youngsters. The only experienced players in the team are Shoaib, Younis, and Yousuf. He has taken a bunch of amateur youngsters and turned them into a collective, hardworking, and top team.
That all being said, I think its quite clear that Inzamam is the best batting captain at the moment.

the problem in syaing this is that you could mean physically there is a huge hole in the team, or in a cricketing sense that they are missing a great player!! (hope i didn't offend anyone)
i agree with the fact that inzi handles the pressure best, but i think smith is one to watch for this type of person in the future, mainly becuase i admire what he did recently in Aus - he was worried that with an inexperienced team, some may buckle under the pressure, so what he did was kept the spotlight on him by those comments that he made(and no-one knew why - well now you do) for example he said that warne wanted to be captain and dissed him a bit, so for the whole of the match - the aussies were gunning for smith, so the rest of the lads didn't have too much pressure - he did have a dissapointing tour but it was very much like martyns ashes in that he was out of form, but managed to get into 20's, 30's and got out, and many times was given out wrongly - judging by how he coped in aus i think he could a one to watch for the future! maybe the mentality of inzi, but ability to be as attacking as ponting!
