Most teams have four or five bowlers, right? In a test team they will
all have pretty good averages except if they're Bangladesh or Zimbabwe,
right? Well I've discovered a way to rate sides on how good they are at
bowling. You take a bowler, and then divide his number of wickets by
the number of matches he has played, you then do this with every bowler
and add up all the answers. The team with the highest number is the
best bowling side. I havn't tried this out but I'm sure it will tell me
Australia are the best. What does everyone think of this idea?

It Won't work mate! Conditions are different all over the world. There may be more bowling track for EG in NZ than in the Sub Continent so there will be a difference.

Not a great idea. Every bowler is different, and some teams might just have one good bowler. His average is so good that inspite of the others being bad, the overall is excellent.
These Legendators can't even come up with good threads. Just joking. Don't take it seriously

You can't think of anything bad I have done right. I think, now that the Indianators and L******ators have become good friends, we should make a group consisting of all of us.

I've discovered an even better way to rate sides on their bowling...you watch them in a few different matches in different parts of the world and in different conditions, you make some judgements based on what you've seen but also leave yourself open to the views of others who have seen more of them than you have or whose knowledge of cricket is better than yours

Yes but an average is taking both in to account, why does everyone on
this forum have to make everything so god damn complicated! Face it, if
youve played loads of matches the average is the most important thing
for a player!!!

Good point Clobbs, I'll shut up now, I just hate it how people act like
that, just dismiss something I've thought hard about as something that
would never work, if you take their number of wickets, it is unlikely
they got all those wickets in the one country so why is conditions such
an important factor?

A spinner who plays in India will have greater chance of playing more often on wickets that suits him. A spinner for England will have less favourable conditions (headingly for example). Therefore, theoretcially will take less wickets at home.

In ODI averages are important but in test matches I prefer strike rates. Sobers averages mid thirties but was a valuable member of the line up. ODI is about least amount of runs. I would prefer a bowler like Lee who will be expensive yet regular wicket taker than a guy like Giles who may be economical but but never takes wickets. You have plenty of time in tests to make the runs so long as you take the twenty needed quickly

Spot on Bobbi , wicket takers are gold dust in the test arena. Fred Trueman was never economical , but when England needcd a wicket , the ball was always thrown to Fred. If they wanted an end bottled up by a seamer ,they had Brian Statham , who was a real miser.
Statistics are an integral part of cricket and give some indication of a players ability , but can be hugely misleading. Great cricketers won matches , Botham's stats aren't dazzling , but many of his performances were!! As someone who doesn't care about stats , maybe one of the youngsters could research current Aussie 1st class stats and draw up the XI with the best batting and bowling averages. That'd be 5 batters , best allrounder , 4 bowlers and Gilchrist. It won't be close to the current test side!! |

Refine the stats with the condition at least 30 First Class matches have been played for qualify, and post your reply Bob, then we'll interestingly see different results. |
