I am a little confused about in-swing and reverse swing. In both, the ball moves into the batsman. So whats the difference? And how does it affect the batsman differently?

The difference between them is that Reverse Swing (or Irish Swing as some call it) swings the opposite to what it should. ie. You hold the ball for an outswinger and it swings in and vice versa.
Inswing swings towards the rough side (conventional swing) whereas Reverse swings towards the shiny side (unconventional swing).
As to how it affects the batsman is different depending but a reverse swinging ball would be a nightmare. It usually swings later so gives a batsman less time to account for it to play shots.
Not only that, batsmen tend to look for the shiny side to see which way the ball is going to swing as it usually swings towards the rough side (away from shiny) so if it swings towards the shiny side, it catches batsmen out.

Reverse swing can also swing the other way you know. i.e outswing. And just to confuse you all, contrast swing is when the ball, like reverse swing, swings towards the shiny side. The difference between the two being, anyone can bowl contrast swing, reverse swing though needs very high speed bowling to that it swings LATE.

Those where my thoughts too when i could bowl 'reverse' swing, when i knew i wasn't even close to bowling fast enough. Just getting contrast swing is a bit of a skill though. I know heaps of swing bowlers who can't do it, yet me, who is more of a seam bowler can if i want too (i guess i exaggerated a little in my above post where i said anyone can get contrast swing) . |

well anyone who can swing the ball, with a ball that is perfect for reverse swing, almost a tampered ball could
but it is hard to do in an actual match situation

That's because most folk give up looking after the ball after about an over. Nobody bothers in my matches and at school I seem to be the one doing most of the work, so that's the end for swing in both cases.

I didn't know that good batsmen look for the shiny/rough side or that they can even see it. But then I was never a good batsman.
So if you are watching the ball, which side is easier to watch for? Would you watch for shiny side or the rough side? |

hahahaha same here!
well after about 10 overs...after the openers come off, im about the only one trying to shine it!
its probably easier to see the shiny side, in the sun you will swee it glint a bit, you can also look for a bowlers cocked wrist (outswing) or a slightly limper wrist (inswing) but that is quite hard to spot and most bowlers will only change it at the last moment...not many people know the limp wrist for inswing technique tho, but im not sure.

Since i doubt anyone here on the forum has actually faced true reverse swing i think the only real tips are to watch the ball in the bowlers hand to see which side is the shiny side, and what batsmen should do anyway is watch the ball right from when it leaves the bowlers hand. If the ball is swinging late, play it late, rather than trying to play it as normal, this will give you more time to adjust.
