Ashley Giles took three good wickets, outbowling Shane Warne who matched him in the scorebook, but not on the field

No idea who was the first to play it. Mike Gatting was the first player
I can remember being halfway decent at it - but even he got into
trouble with it.

It's a great shot if the field placing allows it. Not many teams set fields with a fielder there for the shot, but it is definately a risky shot. http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/38135000/jpg/_38135321_hu ssainap150.jpg |

Yes it is a risky shot, but if it can be pulled of is certainly one that is a worth while shot to play.

Well if the shot can be played, which some people can play it. It is well worth playing as it is a good way of getting runs. It's a risky shot yes, but if you can play it, in my opinion play it!

rubbish shot don't ever play it i thought i would be cocky and did it last season to try and reach my fifty and got out it is a very difficult shot to do and control, it is not a vital asset to say you can play it. gets people in more trouble than not and for the reward you get 2/3 runs its not worth the hassle, your better off just going for a normal sweep or a bunt over midwicket.

why would you want to reverse sweep? Just open the face of ur bat it is just as effective with much less risk.

Who can forget his shot in the World Cup Final against Australia Clobs!!
A fine exponent of reverse sweeping was Jonty - he played the shot with authority and it usually went for 4. |

David Houghten, Flower brothers, Jonty, Martyn, Hussey have been the best exponents of the stroke.. I find it is an easy stroke to play, but useless, as the power you get from it is poor and it is not that easy to control.. Better off mastering the conventional sweep and learn other strokes that are useful.

Didn't Jonty Rhodes hit a six playing a reverse sweep? Maybe he is secretely a left hander!?
I know many of the Zimbabwe players as children who were taught to bat with their opposite hand so that there stong hand would be on top (e.g, Alastair Campbell was a right handed, but was taught to bat left handed) this is one reason why they might be better at the stroke. Also Hussey as a kid used to be a right handed batsmen but reverted to being a left hander to emulate his hero Allan Border.

Jonty Rhodes was great with all sweeps the slog sweep, paddle sweep and of course the reverse sweep. I've tryed practising it in the nets hard to get right best played against leggies as long as you watch the ball for every second until its been hit you can hit the ball |

Chaps, The inventor of the reverse sweep is Javed Miandad - back when he first started it - it did look like a flamboyant and outrageous shot. He is also invented the reverse pull against the medium pacers. However the slog sweep was invented by Steve Waugh - who is also credited with the invention of the well disguised slower ball. it is a very risky shot and also premeditated as mazzy said but it looks delightful to the eye when played perfectly

Hey crownmethod, Here is a link to Jonty Rhodes playing the reverse pull. http://www.sportphotogallery.com/shop/store.php?crn=196& rn=1477&action=show_detail Its like a reverse sweep only that the ball bounces more and thus pulled rather than swept of the legs. This shot can only be played off slower or medium pacer bowlers. Mind u, if u attempt this shot off the fast bowlers, u will get hit. Very funny

that looks like a shot our juniors play because they don't want to hit offside in the normal way.
I don't get it though, why not just pull it, instead of reverse? |
