Some action helps other to get the ball to reverse more than others! A slingy action for example helps - Malinga, Waqar etc!
As we all know too, a ball that is reasonably old with one side shine and the other side rough - which makes the shiny side the heavy side of the ball and that's why the ball goes in the direction of the shiny side.
Pitching the ball up is a must too. Don't expect to bang in a ball short and expect it to reverse a great deal.
Also, pushing the ball away in the air with the shiny side facing a RHB bat will make the ball reverse back wickedly like the ones that Waqar use to do. I don't know if you know what I mean.
Will give more some other time!

Yes, you can! But it might take a bit more longer on grassy pitches with a lush outfield as the ball won't get weared and teared that easily.

you have to bowl at high speeds to reverse it so you will actually notice it. u can get some movement at 70mph but its hardly going to move, you need to really be bowling 80-85mph+ to reverse swing the ball a lot. id say the best reverse swing bowlers in the world at the moment are simon jones, whos probably the best, and shoaib akhtar who is also very good with the old ball mostly because of his slingy action and because he is very quick.

unless you bowl at atleast 70+mph then dont really even bother trying to get reverse swing. Also dont fool yourself that just because you can get the old ball to swing to the 'shiny side' (something i have alwas been able to do) that you really are bowling reverse swing. Reverse swing swings very late, thats what makes it hard to play

I read an article in a cricket magazine that mentioned that effect (the ball swinging the wrong way at speeds under around 70mph) that called it contrast swing, and it certainly does work. The seam should be straight and vertical. Real reverse swing happens at much higher bowling speeds and you want an angled seam for it to happen. And McGrath hardly swings the ball at all, let alone reverse swings it. Edited by Rambo_123UK - 17 March 2007 at 6:52am |

I swing both ways - but only when I'm bowling!

simon jones is the best reverse swinger in the world and he is one of the best bowlers, full stop. Itn is a shame he has been injurede because england needed him in the last ashes but he was injured. he played afriendly the other day fior glamorgan and it went well for him. hopefully he will be back into the england team very soon.
