Rivalry.WHO IS THE BIGGEST RIVALS
Can i please have peoples opinion on who is A...The biggest rivals in cricket, for each nation an example would be India v Pakistan ,who are all the other nations fiersest rivals? B... The biggest rivals in sport of any kind An example would be Celtic V Rangers in the scottish football league,Mohammid ALi V Smokin Joe Frazer, etc, Just some of the biggest rivals in some or any sport you can think of,teams or people that have a hatred or deep respect for.>> Me i would think Aussie is England, N Zealand V Aussies Pakistan V India, Sth Africa V Kenya, And world i would say iraq V America in football, dont know why but they just dont seem to get on to well.as a matter of fact America v anyone at anything, hahaha,America v Canada in ice hockey. Anyway you get the picture im just interseted to know who hates who in sport out in the big world,as lots of different people on the internet are in different countries we can get a snap shot of how and who other countries feel so strong about that they hate losing to someone at anything. |

Yup, just about right saad, but I think USA v Canada has been a fixture for slightly longer (believe it or not) so they're pretty big rivals too.

that's right, the first ever test match (as i read in a book) was between canada and US in 1844 held in New York which doesn't make sense because canada was made in 1867.

The biggest rivalary in world cricket is undoubtably Pakistan versus
India. England versus Australia has the history and epic battles, but
it is merely a cricket clash.
India versus Pakistan is a political, ideological, and religious clash. |

well India and Pakistan are more than rivals, they have a bloody history together and they would do anything to defeat each other! In an Indian/pak match you will be amazed to know that cases of people committing suicide ,murder, anger can take place even before the match is over!and it takes a lot more time before the governments actually start communicating again! |

I don't doubt the suicide and things, but I believe that in the last series between the two countries, didn't it actually bring the two governments together for the first time in ages? I remember that at the time it was succinctly put that 'football starts wars, cricket ends them'. Maybe a slight hyperbole but given the bloody past between the two countries perhaps fitting? |

you are right, still most of the time its the opposite of what happened last time and when these countries(not teams) face each other during a world cup match thats when it really heats up! i must tell you one more thing which is a fact (if you were Indian or paki)that no matter what they say in the news papers, India and Pakistan will never be friendly nations.i know its not nice for both of these countries but i can write this down with my blood that it will never happen.(please don't get the wrong idea about me, if it was up to me i would have stopped this from the beginning!) and if there anything which can be done, that is to settle the Kashmir dispute first.ofcourse i won't be discussing that with you because this site is for cricket chat only. |

Zubee, Just touching on the Kashmer border dispute, because the 2 nations are talking now or at least civil to ane another, have they at least stopped the fighting just now ,or is it continuing as if they were at war? Just to keep this a cricket question,is that true that they ( commit suicide ,murder, anger ) when matches in in progress. Is that because they are fanatical about the teams or because they lose to either India or Paki,? Also m8 do they play each other in any other sport,ie like soccer, hockey, marbles,? |

did you listen to perwaiz mushaffar's interview on BBC,if you have then you will know exactly what is the current situation between these to countries.my cousin(a captain) tells me that at the LOC the fight never stops just because the two army's wanna have some fun with the weapons!my uncle who is currently a major took me to the LOC once and i was shocked to hear a solider, when he told my uncle how they managed to entice an Indian officer in the open and then they took him with a sniper, after that i couldn't go there any more. yes, people do commit suicide, fight and kill one another, in an Indian/pak match no matter what the governments think or do.they are very fanatical about their teams but the objective intensifies when they face each other.yes, Pakistan and India also play hockey and i am glad to tell you that Pakistan won a hockey series against Australia recently and they won several world cups. Zubee ,are your cousin and uncle Indian or Pakistani side? You dont say which side they are fighting for. Anyway its sad that people die in wars but even sadder whn they die in peace for a cricket game? I didnt know that Pakistan won against Australia at hockey, good on them. They may be a chance to win gold at the olympics,I take it you are from Pakistan by the hockey quote ,they have always been strong in hockey,i think the also play football there ,yes? Is cricket the number 1 sport in Pakistan like it is in India? In my mind Cricket in Australia runs behind the football and rugby and a few other sports in popularity,Not saying i dont love it but just that Aussie rules football and rugby union and rugby league are stronger. Although it is a summer sport,so i can only go on figures for attendance. Summer has hit here today with a bang as it is really hot today. Good cricket weather. |

I don't really want to start going on about football, but huge rivals (or they certainly were) were Honduras and El Salvador - that was the match back in the 70s which started a war between the two countries. *I'm not 100% sure about dates and countries but it's definitely two countries in Central America.

one hammer! yes, i am Pakistani and my cousin and uncle are in Pakistan army. as for hockey,i must add that hockey is our national game and cricket comes after that.but if you come to Pakistan, you will be surprised to see that everyone likes cricket there and its a dream of almost every teenage to play for his national team.whereas hockey being the national game gets very little attention by the government as well as the people. but i just love to watch hockey because nothing is as exciting as hockey or football, where all the players of both the teams come face to face in one ground.in short if i am watching a cricket game, i stay calm and fully aware of my surroundings but while watching a hockey match i cant sit at one place for a minute and get carried away easily(if you are extreme football fan then i am sure you know what i mean) Edited by zubeee |

England versus Australia dates back to 1877 and certainly is the most intense between these two countries. India /Pakistan is a political battlefield and losing isn't an option - the two countries didn't play for many years before this latest series which , to most people's relief , ended 1-1.
From a South African perspective , SA versus NZ at rugby is top of the tree by a country mile !! The rivalry from the sport's greatest sides has to be seen to be believed. Sadly , with the advent of the Trinations annual bunfight , the aura surrounding an All Black/Springbok encounter has definitely been watered down - but losing isn't an option !! Football , in the old days THE match in the UK was always the annual England versus Scotland clash. When played at Wembley , the whole of Scotland emptied and they came south to drink England dry and steal our pitch!! Mercifully , they didn't win very often and the fixture has lessened in intensity......maybe one day the Jocks will qualify for a world cup and they'll be drawn together in the same pool (that has never happened) - then you'll have a bloodbath on your hands !! Cuba versus USA at baseball's a biggie too - if Castro's boys win , the Yanks go ballistic!!
Finally , in conkers , my local school versus Leftwich Girl's High was sooooooooooooooo hyped !!! Blimey , bloody knuckles and icy glares were the order of the day.......yep , the good ole days !!

Oh and Hammer , SA versus Kenya doesn't raise a whimper matey!! Fact is SA versus other African countries is really only a battle when qualifying for the football world cup or the african nations cup. Then the locals (soccer has the biggest following of any sport in SA) go ape no matter which country they're playing against.

but those were british colonies. i know that the united province of canada (ontario and quebec) existed and the other colonies like new brunswick and nova scotia existed but they were all british colonies. canada officially became a country when confederation happened in 1867 and the colonies joined together to form The Dominion of Canada, which eventually grew and grew from east to west as was John A. Macdonalds dream... and i'll stop there because this is not history class.
but talks of making canada had been going on for a while between "the fathers of confederation". but that still doesn't explain why it was called canada in 1844 when it was a bunch of british colonies. maybe because it was like West Indies, players from a whole bunch of islands or in canada's case, colonies are put under one team called canada. Wales and england in the rugby is a fairly big rivalry match. No so much on behalf of england but on behalf of wales. The passion that comes out of that game is quite extroadinary. Fremantle Dockers vs West Coast Eagles in Australian Rules Football. No one but Western Australians can trully apreciate the rivalry that is the Western Derby. This game devides the hole state. And WA is a big place. |

how about SA and NZ. i read on cricinfo that the last time they faced off in NZ they played some real harsh games as in there was some exchange of verbal insults, harsh weather, and some close matches.
i don't know if this is true because as i have mentioned like a hundred times in this site that i only started watching cricket again in 2005. |

Yep, indeed, the big Perth derby draws huge crowds, but it is all
rather friendly. No-one fights afterwards! Bragging rights are
important, but it does become a thing of 'our team is better than
yours'. That is about it!

They're certainly huge rivals on the rugby pitch, but I think what you're referring to is a verbal attack on Graeme Smith by Stephen Fleming when RSA last toured NZL - whether there is still some afters boiling over from that, I don't know...
