Heh, another ball-related question. Anyone here tried a speed ball like the Platypus Speed Ball, where you bowl it and it tells you your bowling speed? How accurate are these and even though it says its the same size and weight as a normal ball, how odd does it feel holding it?
This is the Platypus speed ball I am talking about: http://www.speedsensor.com.au/ Can't seem to find any other companies that make anything like this. |

I was thinking of getting one they're made of a plastic rubber material and you can't hit it with a bat because it will break the computer inside. Even though you don't hit them i think they break easily.

Are they not abit of a waste of time? Surely by the time you get to the ball again it will be a completely different speed than when you released it, or is technology evading me again?

Well i'd say its fairly obvious it displays the highest speed it
travelled after leaving your hand rather then the speed its moving when
you pick it up...
I imagine its fairly inaccurate but I might splash out on one and see how it goes. |

Yeah, I know but you can't see how fast you've bowled it when you release it.

How long does the number on the speed sensor stay on for? You will probably need a wicket keeper at the other end to see how fast it was.

Yeah, that link I gave mentions that if you don't follow the instructions very closely, the speed will not be accurate. You have to hold on to the ball without altering your grip even a bit from when you set the mechanism to when you release the ball.
I would think that the number stays on for long enough so you can go over to the ball and see it. There is probably a reset button or something so you can clear the speed after you've seen it. |

I recently bought one to try it out. Its actually not that bad. I'm not sure if it is accurate but it picks up the speed. If the ball picks up anything over 165 km/h then you are bowling aren't bowling far enough. You have to set the ball to what distance you want to bowl from to start it up. You can choose from 6,9,12,14,16,18,21 and 24 metres. The computer inside is very sensitive and will break very eaisly. Although i had a good experience with it, it malfunctioned within 15 minutes. It is not worth getting, however i managed to get a refund on it and they gave me a new one. Cover the ball with bubble wrap and the problems fixed
. Its a bit hard to grip it though
