That's twice in the last 3 months that SA have dismissed a side for under 50. When on the absolute top of their game, their attack is superb. Morkel was outstanding. SL had no answer and I can't see how they will come up with some answers. Their bowling was pedestrian, Nuwan looked decent and Malinga was excellent but everything else was poor. Mendis serves no purpose anymore. Batting was just calamitous, Dilshan is proving to be little more than a walking wicket. Losing early wickets doesn't bode well for a very inexperienced lower middle order. Unless SA take their foot of the gas, SL could keep getting blown away. What a start for AB, one of the most decisive victories in ODI history.

We're speaking greatly here of SL's inconsistency, but let's be frank, they are playing very consistently under Dilshan... consistently bad.

I suppose that game was a bit of an anomaly but as Mikey says, they have been consistently poor in both formats. Vaas and Murali leaving has left a giant hole in the side that doesn't look like it will be filled anytime soon. Massive changes are not plausible until they improve their squad of players but they need to start making sensible changes immediately. For one, Dilshan is an abysmal captain possessing no ingenuity or tactical nous. It's really time to replace him with someone else, maybe Mathews. It would be a bit of a burden on Mathews expecting him to be an all-rounder and captain the side but I can't see who else would take it. They can't keep letting Dilshan lead though, it's just not gonna work out.

Graeme Smith has been in pretty poor form of late and needs to turn things around  must say, he hasn't really been the player that we know since some time now.

SLN will take time to rebuild, I think they need to identify their future players and stick with them, in the CB series later in AUS they will be up against IND too and that might just be the time even they'll get back to form!

RSA go 2-0 up, I saw the game and I must say SLN, although it looks like they have improved a bit and shown some fight, it isn't like that. They have shown no character, at the start of the innings they were going at just over 1 run per over, desperately trying not to lose wickets, then even at the end Mathews and Chandimal were playing desperately trying not to get out and just take singles, they were so scared and didn't want a 43 all out embarrassment again!

The bowlers showed some spirit though but SLN need to show some character even in defeat, which they are not quite doing.

on RSA they'll be happy that Duminy got among the runs and the run machine Hashim Amla scoring another Half Century, Smith got a start but again couldn't carry on, he'll like to have a 100 in this series just to get his confidence back.

SL in with a chance now that Amla and Kallis have been rested. Peterson replacing Amla at the top and Ingram to likely bat at 3 replacing Kallis. Looks weaker but a major opportunity for the two guys coming in. I feel a bit for Colin, he is a very good attacking batsman who hasn't had the kind of opportunities he should have had. His record is very good and yet he can barely get into the line-up. Hopefully, he can seize this chance and make some runs.

The pitch at East London was so slow , making attractive shot making practically impossible.  SA were always in control of the run chase and JP Duminy will feel pretty good after making a match winning half century.
Resting Kallis and losing Amla gives Peterson another chance and who knows , if he does the business we might just see Smith missing out soon !

You are right Sledge, given the kind of form Smith is in, a couple of good knocks by Peterson and Smith could well be shown the door. I have a feeling Smith will score big in this series though.

A good show by SLN today, 266 in their 50 overs is a decent score, an with Amla on leave and Kallis rested, this could be an unlikely win for SLN today!

Smith failed yet again yesterday , yorked for just 2 by Malinga.  Duckworth/Lewis won in the end though after a torrential downpour typical of the highveld in summer.  SA won by just 4 runs but on a flat deck I'd have expected them to get home against this attack.  The one contentious issue was the run out of JP Duminy - he seemed well over the line when the wicket was broken , but Billy Doctove didn't agree and the SA dressingroom showed their disgust with the call.  I'm no fan of Doctrove as a standing umpire - far too many mistakes , but I understand his incompetence now - he simply can't see properly!

I dont agree Sledger with 5 overs of Malinga left i was expecting SL to win and a mistake like that by 3rd umpire should not be ignored.

Ya I was watching the game, and that run out was shocking, it was not even like "difficult to say" thing, he was clearly in and still the 3rd umpire gave that out!

I agree with Mystery, RSA still needed 88 runs and had their last recognized pair batting, although Robin Petersen, Steyn and Morkel can all bat, I think SLN still were favts to win the game, esp with 5 overs of Malinga still left.

Anyways, RSA win the series 3-0, they can rest some more of their players now, SLN lost their 4th straight bilateral series, ENG 2-3, AUS 2-3, PAK 1-4 and now RSA 0-3 with 2 to go! Terrible run for Sri Lanka since the WC, although I thought they played well yesterday and showed some charecter which was missing in the first two games.

SL did have Malinga but AB was still at the crease so I was expecting SA to edge home. Would have been a real tight one though. Run-out was disgusting, SA reacted rather well tbh.

SA can experiment more now that the series is in the bag. Would like to see Botha, Parnell and Philander all given a game.

Yes , they'll be some changes and I expect Botha and Philander (if fit) to get a start.  I'm out on Parnell as his form in domestic cricket has been wildly inconsistent - he can bowl complete dross and then somehow come back for a second spell and look like a worldbeater ! He's a decent lower order batsman though and that just might swing selection in his favour.

I am still unconvinced by Peterson in the shorter format. Would really like to have seen Levi given a go but perhaps don't want him to be exposed to Malinga in his first ODI lol.

Big changes look in place for SL cricket. Selectors axed and Dilshan and Marsh likely to go as well. Don't know about Marsh but Dilshan has to go as captain, probably time to start thinking about whether he should go as a player. His contribution is virtually nothing these days. He is riding off the back of success in the 2009 T20 WC and the 2011 ODI WC. Since then, he has been an abject failure and I doubt he can offer much more as SL go forward. They need consistency, caution and determination (e.g. how PAK have approached their team selection since the 2010 debacle) and I don't think Dilshan's swashbuckling style really brings this to the table.

... and for a change SLN finally win. He does a pretty good job with both the ball and the bat Thisera Perera, I wonder why they don't play him often.

BP's comments on Robin Petersen proved right and even I never really rated him, except that he did fairly well in the WC but as spinny said, on the track like in chennai who wouldn't? Petersen is a very ordinary bowler and it is not just surprising but shocking that he is keeping out players like Botha and Imran Tahir out of the side. Even Du Plessis bowled better than him.

Philander had a very ordinary game while Parnell is being used a an all rounder, which is fair enough, I thought he bowled well yesterday but without any luck, even got a wicket off a no ball, I saw the game, It really was a very flat wicket. Also good to see Smith getting some runs.

Well done to Thisara, he is a very handy cricketer. Very crucial dismissal of AB at an important stage in the innings and a great to watch explosive innings too. Mind boggling that they were playing Kosala ahead of him who was barely bowling and hardly got a hit. Dilshan played decently but I still think he should go, I can't see what he brings long-term. He is already 34 I believe.

Disappointing from SA. Should have showed that killer instinct they were talking about and finished the series off 5-0. Albie shouldn't have been dropped for starters. AB's decision to bring a slow left armer on when Perera was batting wasn't very intelligent. I think du Plessis is getting short-changed, he is a very good batsman. They keep playing him at 6 and 7 and he comes in with 5 or so overs to go often and is required to hit it out of the park from ball one. That's not really in his game, he should be batting 4 or 5. I don't know how they can play him there though because Amla, Smith, Kallis, AB and Duminy is pretty set in stone as top 5. Also, bowling was pretty poor. As sam said, Peterson was very ordinary and Botha should really get a game at Jo'burg. Sledge's assessment of Parnell is spot on, very inconsistent but he had a decent enough game. Vernon isn't an ODI bowler though, keep him for the Tests. This game highlighted how much SA need Dale Steyn; even if he isn't bowling at his best and taking wickets, they need his experience and control at key stages in the match.

again no Ind or Pak cricket on weekend but thankfully I've got some Australian Open tennis to look up to ... and this last ODI. I've been watching almost all games from this series as the D/N games start at evening time in India and the day games are during the week ends, and I didn't saw a ball from the Pak-Eng game only followed live commentary on the internet!!!

anyways, last ODI, looking forward to see Smith bat, hope he gets a hundred today!

I would like to see ABD at 3, Faf at 4 and JP at 5 and keep Ingram and Morkel at 6 and 7. RSA lost the game at Kimberley because they didn't really have explosive batsmen coming in at those positions but I feel Ingram's aggressive nature is better suited to the lower middle order and same for Morkel. RSA seemed hesitant to launch in the last game because they didn't want to expose a pretty long tail too early. With Ingram, Morkel, Botha and Parnell; there's plenty of batting all the way to number 9 so more license for the likes of AB to play shots early on.

well they have given Faf Du Plessis a promotion at 3, so that is interesting, Petersen out early again he hasn't been able to capitalize on this opportunity. I agree with BP, even when Hashim and Kallis come back i would not mind AB at 3 and Kallis at 4, AB is an attacking batsmen and has also done well as an opener, so No.3 will be a good slot for him.

Good win for Sl , but it was a dead rubber. Smith obviously read Sam's post and got his ton and a good ton from de Villiers too. The 2nd string attack just couldn't prevent the Lankans from winning pretty much as they liked - I think they'll be glad to be going home after what's been an arduous tour.
New Zealand next month for the South Africans and then on to England in the Summer - tough schedule and Kallis and Steyn will need careful handling.

This tour has gone rather well for SL all things considered. The only thing that makes the tour seem worse than it was is the manner of some of the defeats (innings defeat at Centurion, walloped by 10 wickets at Cape Town and 258 run loss at Paarl). If you'd given the Lankans 2-1 defeat in the Tests and 3-2 defeat in the ODIs, they would probably have taken it. It's gone about as well as it possibly could have in the end and I don't really understand the people lambasting them for this tour. Winning the first Test in SA ever, chasing over 300 in consecutive ODIs. A pretty decent showing by SL but SA were always going to win both series given their class.

SA's attack looked really ragged and lacked any kind of control without Steyn for the second game running. Peterson bowled better but too many short balls in there too. I really don't know why he is being preferred to Botha, surely Botha must feature in the NZL ODI series. Kallis and Amla at the expense of Petersen and Ingram would add to the batting for NZL too, that is if they don't decide to rest Kallis. I expect NZL will be an even easier proposition than SL tbh, at least SL had some x-factor players like Malinga, good youngsters like Chandimal and Mathews, very good ODI opener in Tharanga and experience of Sangakkara. I don't really think NZL's Test and ODI squad is as good as SL's. Aside from Vettori and promising Bracewell, it looks very ordinary.

Somewhat harsh on Marsh (no pun intended!) for him to go after 4 months. To be frank, he had nothing to work with, especially when the big guns weren't firing and the youth are really nothing of note!

I must confess, I'll just never understand this "blame the manager for everything" philosophy. If a great team is performing really well and the players are standing up but they keep losing consistently (or more than they should) because of bad tactical errors, poor team selection, rifts within the team etc. then the manager should be held accountable. In SL's case, they just don't have the talent to live with SA, simple as that. The PAK series before this was undoubtedly poor but again, it was down to the players who never performed. Same thing with Fletcher atm. Some fingers pointing at him when everyone knows it is the players who have hardly stepped up.

Yup Smith read my post Sledge, and I was very very happy for him yesterday, a well deserved century and that'll shut up the critics for some time.

Agree with BP and Mikey, SLN had more than a decent tour, in fact a good tour I'd say because most of us thought that SLN will struggle to win even a single game on the tour, hell they've won their 1st ever test in RSA and two 300 + run chases in ODI's, and what does Geoff Marsh get in return? sacked!!! Hilarious! LOL

I'm disappointed with RSA though, atleast 4-1 should have been the result, the bowling lacked the sting without Steyn and even Morne looked to be incomplete without Steyn. I thought Parnell bowled well and looks to have improved from the last time I saw him bowl and Tsotsobe got wickets but overall they just missed Steyn. The batting was good, Amla and Kallis were not missed as AB and Smith did the job anyways, but RSA will have to be more consistent if theyr want to become the best team in the world across formats.

Dilshan's gone and Jayawardene is expected to lead the side in the next series.  No surprise with that decision as he's probably the least effective captain playing international cricket today!

Dead right Sledger, Dilshan's winning rate was really poor and his effectiveness with the bat, barring his majestic 195 against England was not at test standard. I am of the opinion that Kumar quit, not because of the workload (especially considering he doesn't keep wicket anymore in tests), but because he knew without Murali and to a lesser extent Vaas, that Sri Lanka would not be winning many games - instead of bearing the brunt of the responsibility for the losses, he premptively quit the captaincy. Even he would have known there was no one of note to replace him, especially as Dilshan is OLDER than him, Mahela has been there and done that with the captaincy and there is no one else viable for the job in the side.

Mahela isn't in the best of form himself, captaincy is probably only going to make it more difficult unless he revels in it the way Clarke has taken to captaincy. Mahela isn't really a great choice in my book, he is better than Dilshan ofc but it just seems like they are taking a safe backward step instead of a daring forward step. I guess it's fine for a year or so while they groom someone like Mathews and then hand the reigns over to him.

Mathews doesn't quite come across as leadership material, not just yet. He's still young and still needs to do a little bit more to cement his spot in the side. He's a batsmen who can bowl a bit, and he WILL struggle on wickets that suit the seamers - I don't think I've ever seen him leave the ball. The Sri Lankans are really struggling when it comes to leadership and there is way too much politics when it comes to selection and management. A strong Sri Lanka is great for world cricket, but right now I dare say they're at their worst in a decade.
