I've just read that Durham are coming to Cape Town for some pre-season warmups - maybe I should go have a look at Harmy and report back.....

Your first sentence is 100% correct. The trouble is how often does he produce that top form?

that is a good point but i feel that harmison, when used with Hoggard and Flintoff, can be considered less of a 'risk' then say a mahmood or a plunkett.

Harmison can misfire, but England are blessed with a very strong seam attack, one that could compensate for an off day from harmison. Including Harmison is in my opinion a 'no brainer' because i believe he more often then not, pulls he weight in the side.

But Mahmoud and Plunkett are both young and have a lot of improving to do. Plunkett in particular has a very good chance of being a genuine world-class bowler in four years or so, and I still think Mahmoud has a lot of potential, and if handled right could be up there with the best

Harmison certainly comes across as a bit of a 'no brainer' whenever I hear him being interviewed

True, but does Freddie Flintoff give you much faith in his intelligence?

Point is, he is not past it and does not to yet make way for some younger bowlers who will blow hot and cold more often than an experienced campaigner (who is also capable of 90+ mph and destructive bowling)

at least with the youngsters - say Mahmood, for example - I can see they are busting a gut to do well, With Harmison it is almost as if he resigns himself to it not being his day, and oh well, he's got a lifetime seat at St James Park anyway

Maybe they'll use him instead of Owen and see if their luck changes.

I have to say, Harmison is a bowler worth taking a gamble on. Who knows, he might hit back his 2004 form!

I disagree, I think untill he's proved his hunger by being dropped and bowling his arse off in the county championship no-one can confidently say he wants it enough, least of all himself.

That's right CM , enough of this wet-nursing!!   Clobs said earlier in this thread - take away his central contract - that's the right action. If he doesn't respond to that kind of treatment , then England are better off without him.

harmy needs time, i think he should be overlooked for this first test match just to allow him more match practice in country cricket

To be honest he has started this county season with some fire and should be given a chance to carry that on in the tests, if he goes for it then great, if he plays badly again then it may be time to drop him and really make sure he knows that to be in the team he needs to be firing.

Spot on there Kerm, that's the way to go with any bowler of his type. Plus he hasn't played one-day cricket so he has no 'burnout' excuses.
Good one Graham!

He's played a few no-pressure games against second-string batting attacks and done really well - all that proves is that he's a calss above county cricket, whcih we knew already. It doesn't tell us anything new about whether he's mentally ready to play at the top level of cricket again

So what you would rather drop him on the off chance that he isn't fired up?

Harmison must play and put the wind up the Windies (pardon the pun!). He's still the most potent quick in England and from what I've seen on Sky , he's causing endless problems with the new ball.
He'll bowl 4-balls and the keeper will curse him for all the legside takes , but he'll take wickets , I promise you that.

If he's firing, Sarwan surely isn't due any runs for sure!
