nice one sledgerI personally dont see what the probelem with just buying weights is. I bought eights (8KG) for under £10. I do 15 minutes of weights a day and eat 100g of protein, like have a 3 egg omelette and a jug of milk or something. |

Na PF, I think our legendary lad AK has a few more than that. If AK kept up the pace he had in his youth days, he would have had about 20000 now. I guess it's a thing all cricketers go through.

Hey guys,
I found this site helpful for cricket fitness. I learned taht I was not warming up properly. It is not that important to do long static stretches before playing, but dynamic stretching (loosener exercises) instead. http://www.harrowdrive.com/the-complete-guide-to-cricket-fitness/ |

Hi guys
Ok this must sound embarrassing but here goes.Im a middle order batsmen, usually in when the top order scews up.Ive noticed that the first 5-10 mins of my innings,im claustrophobic(hope i spelled that right). My heart rate is alteast 110 :P and i breathe heavily and get thirsty very quickly. It goes away eventually, but i hate it.Imnot sure why it happens, any suggesions?any remedies?Or any routine to RELAX before i go in.
by the way,ive beenout of shaoe for a while but many other ppl on the team who are way out of shape dont seem to have this problem. Edited by harsy222 - 31 May 2007 at 1:59pm |

harsy222, It's just nerves and each person is unique when it comes to nerves.
Learn to meditate would be my best advice. I've been doing this for about 4 months now and at times nothing stresses me out or gets me nervous.

More Calcium and Vitamin D.
Vitamin D aids in absorption of Calcium into our bones.

You know Harshy, water lower the rate of the heart beat so when you are feeling it, call for the water. If international cricketers are fitter than us and call for it often, then it shouldn't be no different for us. They do feel the thirst and the heart beats rapid too.

Here's what I found on net doctor about it.
Eat some of the above mentioned fish and drink some milk, and it should see you right.

Re: Buying your own weights
Working out at home I find is very convenient. It helps if you have the space to use a bench, but it's by no means essential. I started off using just a pair of dumbells.
I started of buying a pair of York dumbells that came with 20kg of weights (~£20). I later added a barbell/dumbell set and another 50 kg of weights (~£50), and an incline bench (~£45). Later still I bought extra weights on their own (3 sets of 2x10kg discs, and one or two sets of 4x5kg discs), and an EZbar (IMO essential, in hindsight). I have also been given weights and equipment by friends who no longer wanted them. My last purchase was a squat rack at xmas. I'm off down to Argos again next week to buy some more 10kg discs as my deadlift and bench press are again outstripping what I can fit on the bar with the weights I've got now.
Those plastic concrete-filled weights are a waste of time. They take up twice the space of the equivalent iron weight, meaning they are bulkier to store and more importantly, you quickly run out of room on a dumbell or barbell to add weight. Spinlock (or equivalent) type weights are better than fixed-weight dumbells because you don't need a large and expensive set of dumbells, and you can change the weight on them quite quickly and easily. As you get stronger you can buy more weights to supplement those that come with the set.
A single set of dumbells is a pretty good investment because they are very versatile and practically any bodypart has an excercise or variation of an exercise that can be performed with dumbells. You can fit up to 3 x 5kg discs on each side of a spinlock dumbell quite comfortably, giving you 2 x 30kg dumbells. That's a fair bit of weight.

It depends, if you are drinking loads of milk and having nothing with vitamin D in it then it's not good because the calcium won't get absorbed in to the bones so it's pointless.
If, however, you are getting Vitamin D in your system as well then it's a very good thing.
Drinking milk isn't bad, it's much better than drinking pop anyway

Milk is fantastic! Good for the guts really. I usually take a drink of a milk product before taking a ride on the ferry and it saves my guts from a horrid ride!

Apparently warm milk is better than cold milk because when it is heated up more milk is evaporated and leaves more calacium. So if you want to have more calcium in you diet drink warm milk!

hey guys,
what kind of exercises can I do to strengthen my hands and forearms. I have trouble holding the bat with a strong grip and my hands tire after a few overs of batting. |

Heavy weights and push ups. Make sure to over work the muscles a bit so they can get stronger. If you push them too light, it won't do much good! You might feel a little sore at first but as you keep on doing it, the body gets accustomed!

The muscles you use for grip are in the forearms. Buying those grip excerciser things will help but really you'll improve your grip strength most by lifting heavy weights (hammer curls, any rowing excercise, shrugs, deadlifts etc) without the aid of straps. There's also the old rolled-up-towel twist.

i think 1 of the reasons why i keep switching to my top hand when batting even though i grip it tightly with
my bottom hand is because my left hand might me too weak to pull the bat forward. Is it bad having 4 glasses of cold milk then? I'm kinda addicted to the stuff and it gives me a good nights sleep! |
