Australian leg-spinner Stuart MacGill is retiring from Tests at the end of the current Test Match against WI, feeling that the time is now right to retire because 'there is no way I I will ever walk on to a cricket field unless I can guarantee that I can dismiss top order batsmen consistently. The prospect of letting myself and the team down is simply not an option. I have worked way too hard for too long to sabotage my achievements by playing Test cricket for the wrong reasons.'
This seems all a rather sad end to MacGill's 'career' having been bowling in the shadow of Warne for all these years. Australia now have a bit of trouble and will need to play uncapped (and unheard of) Beau Casson. This could also cause Shane Warne to make a return to Test cricket in 2009, unless Casson performs marvellously.
Stuart MacGill:
Wickets: 207
Average: 28.28
Best Figures: 12-107 vs England, 1999.
Those stats go to show what quality MacGill had, seeing Test bowlers with an average under 30 are usually seen as very good indeed.

A very good leggie, definitely in the top three I've seen - Warne, Kumble and him. A gigantic spinner of the ball and a dangerous googly was his most notable attributes.

I wouldn't put MacGill in the top 3 I've seen but he's a real give it everything bowler. He could demolish top orders on his day but recently he hasn't been able to find his form and so I think he's right to retire.
It's a shame that we didn't get to see more of him on the international stage but he played in an era of leg spin which belonged to Warne.

Warne and Quadir best I have seen and MacGill is a long way short of both, he is an angry little ant as well. I doupt many cricketers will be sad to see him finish.

He was one of my favourite bowlers. He is surely in my top 3 leggies alongwith Warne and Kumble. I was a great fan of his and always wanted him to play ahead of Warne. He seemed to enjoy the threat which he always possessed from Warne and gave it his all when opportunities came his way. After Warnei's retirement that zip was missing in MacGill and he did struggle with injuries. It was pathetic to see him bowl during the two tests against the Windies and I am glad that he retired with a very good record for someone who always played under the shadow of Warne. Good Bye Macca!

Massive spinner of the ball, I have been a fan since I saw him - not necessarily a fan of his character, but by the fact I'm mesmorised by such majestic spin bowlers. Him and Warne really switched on a light in my mind... who compares in terms of leg-break bowling in the last 10 years? Kumble is more of a slow medium bowler who gets a bit of leg cut, and Mushtaq Ahmed could never cement a place in his side.
Danish Kaneria, when he can finally find some form will be a brilliant bowler. But for now it seems we are losing a lot of leg spinners.
Chawla and Kaneria - our hopes for the future!

That sri lankan lad Mendis will be lot lot better than Chawla and Kaneria. We may see Qadir's son in a couple of years time as well.

Mendis isn't a leg spinner Zuhair, infact, he can't be categorized more than anything but a spinner. He bowls leggies and offies.
