Although his wickets are not often pretty, and quite often against the tail, its true that he takes plenty of wickets. His statistics in matches where both he and Warne play are also very impressive, and his strike rate is quite phenomonal (1 wicket every 8-9 overs)

Just wondering if people reckon he should be a shoe-in to play for Australia

He'd be a shoe-in if Warne wasn't around. Unfortunately for him, he's only going to get a game if Warne is unavailable or the pitch is going to turn sideways.

I'd say that he should be a permanent in the Aussies test team. he is a great spinner along with warne. he takes wickets and is still not a permanent in the aussies test team. Warne is an obstacle in MacGills success.

He's unlucky , he must hate Warney!! Only once in his entire career has he been selected over Warne and that was when Mark Taylor's side toured (and won) in the Caribbean. Warne was dropped after a couple of poor tests and MacGill got in. Since then he's been the bridesmaid and not the bride - sad but perfectly logical. Warne is simply brilliant , MacGill merely very good.
Mental disintegration works for me !!

MacGill should be a permanent on the aussie team but shane warne over-shadows him and if shane weren't here MacGill wold probably be quite an accomplished player.

warne's wickets come from mesmirising the batsman and from executing a well thought out plan...macgills are kinda more just the result of frustrated batsman who have been shackled up by mcgrath and the like trying to let loose, thats how i see it. but never the less macgill has proven he does take wickets

Yea, MacGill takes wickets even with McGrath and Shane in the attack. That proves that he is a good bowler because even with 2 of the best bowlers in international cricket today, he still manages to take wickets consistently.

macgill is no doubt a great bowler but he is only effective if the pitch suits spin bowling.still he is the pefect backup for warne

He shouldn't be a back up. He's a great bowler and as I already mentioned, he takes wickets even with two of the best bowlers in international cricket today...McGrath and Warne. That proves that he is a great bowler. When McGrath and Shane are both in a game, what are the chances of other bowlers taking wickets consistently? Very slim, and it some times happens like in the first test when Lee and Bracken took 9 of the 10 West Indies wickets in West Indies' second inning. But bracken doesn't take wickets because it's a fluke, its because he's a great bowler, he's good enough to consistently take wickets even with the other 2 great bowlers in the attack.
