Hi Merv M8 you cant go to this without asking Gatting about the ball of the century as they call it. Or if you want to get cheekier, about the dope smoking incedent with botham and co he was accused of in jamaica. I reckon if you ask,j Agnew about one S Ganguly, what he thinks of him or his methods ,you may get a very terse answer as he is a very strong advocate against ganguly's tactics. Your a lucky bloke merv ,i recently went to a sportsmans night that had, your namesake Mervyn Hughes,S K Warne,Deano Jones,Tuffnel, and M Waugh. It was a set show and they talked about funny things they have seen and heard around the cricket world but only got a few questions from the audience that they [picked from a selection. The reason i ask about gatting with the ball from warne was Merv hughes said (not warne) the story goes that when gatting was bowled and got back to the rooms as he was passing Merv, merv said, how did you just leave that go. Gatting said he wants to get back into the rooms to look at the replay becuase he reckons the ball was so wide the sqaure leg umpire has grabbed it and thrown down the wicket haha it is funnier when they tell it. Hey have a top night there merv, not to many drinks now ?

Hi Saad
Yeah he prob would be a bit embarressed but from all reports he is a terrific guy who does take the pi5S out of himself,I dont think Merv will be breaking new ground with that question and i hear he has a stock(funny ) answer to it when he is asked. How did the answer David Boon go,does anyone know? |

It's definitely not Boonie Hammer ! I remember Ritchie Benaud talking about this on TV - I can't remember the fella's name , but I think it was a trip to England in the 1920's |

Possibly! Joking aside though , I have Gatting's biography and the chapter on this sorry affair is very interesting reading. Like most explosive rows it erupted over something pretty trivial - Gatting calling a fielder into a closer position so that he could get another over in before the close. He did inform the batsman , but not the umpire. The umpire saw it and stopped play and Gatting lost it! There had been a lot of contentious decisions during the series , remember , no neutral umpires in those days , and the English were pretty hacked off. Still his reaction was wrong , as was the umpires and an ugly scene was just what cricket didn't need!
Still , it was the catalyst to the introduction of neutral officials , so some good came of it in the end. On a similar note , Vaughan on two occasions during this last match moved immediately after Giles had delivered the ball. He ran from 1st slip to legslip as the batsman was sweeping practically everything. Vaughan , when questioned about this thought he was being clever - in fact the rules state that it is an unfair practise , so not allowed. He'd better not do it in the test or there could be hell to play! |

You are right with the first one,the second one is incorrect.
Well it may be a bowling feat i have not heard he owns,if so it is not the one im thinking of. If the bowling of 28 (do you mean he hit 28 in a test against SL) is indeed correct then it is 3 records he holds,to my knowlege though he dont hold that record for most runs maybe some one else holds it with him or has passed it? I will wait to see if you confirm that one,but the other i still need, A clue is....it is not a record anyone would like to have.......... |

No Saad,
I will have to give a bit more of a clue,as i said it is something that no one would like to hold a record for. If you think of things in test cricket that you would not like to own,you should get it, its not most ducks, nor nothing to do with his bowling ,batting,or fielding, this narrows it down quite considerably. Yet in all the years and all the players to play test cricket Brian Lara is the man that not only owns the record outright ,they are saying it will never be taken from him or at least not in say the next 20 years. Its his and he hates it .What could it be??????? Guesses are more than welcome??? |

Saad NO..I know that happens to be rare, but i dont think it will take them 20 years to do it again.
Howevr you are getting closer. PS it has nothing to do with his captaincy.Bat,bowl, catch, run out,yet he is the holder of this most despised of records. He knows he owns it,he says he hates to own it,no other cricketer would want to own it.No other cricketer will own it they are saying for at least 20 years and perhaps he will hold it forever,,this record was gratiusly handed to him by an englishman???????? |

Yes Ade,,well done ,you got it.
He has lost (now 56) tests, clearly the most of all players now playing, the next is in the early 30s,Alex stewart held it and said he was so embarressed to know he alone was the only man to play in so many losing tests, just think how you would feel to own that record. Anyway well done. as for the batting record of 28 in an over,i havent heard that or saw it in the record for Lara, are you sure he owns the record by himself,or indeed it is the record? Ade your go at a question m8. If Ade dont post a question may i leave this one. How old do you have to be before you call the old LPs a CD hahaha thats for sledger hahaha G McGrath recently became the first bowler in the history to do what. ps its not going past counrtney walsh for wickets for a fast bowler. |
