I have only seen very little of him but I don't think he was anything like as elegant as Barry Richards. He hit it extremely hard though.

I've only seen modern day players that are considered elegant, such as Waugh, Lara, Inzy, Tendulkar and Ponting, which would be considered the elite for the 90's, and I'm wondering where they would fit around the likes of Pollock, Richards (both) and Sober's? Baring in mind that from what I've seen of Lara, he's the only one that comes close.
Good one Graham!

I don't think the batsman of 90's are anywhere near those. Specially when you consider the quality of bowlers they had to face and the pitches.

I wouldn't say King Viv was especially elegant, more ruthless and intimidating

I never saw Barry Richards which is my loss from what I hear when anybody describes him. Didn't see much of Sobers either apart from the 6 sixes he took off one over.

I remember Greg Chappell for pure elegance when I was younger, although I don't much care for him - sorry to kiwi fans, I know he's your idol .

Gower and M.Waugh were style kings that I remember but went out too often trying to play too pretty. It seemed to me they would rather make a graceful 30 than a gritty 70.

As an all round package it's hard to go past Viv.

Lara at his peak was something else but didn't have the alround game of The Master Blaster nor the longevity. Then again, it is sometimes hard to compare what you observe as a youngster with what you observe as an adult because your perceptions subtly change over time. You end up looking for different aspects.

I saw quite a bit of Pollock and can safely say he was fantastic.  When he played for Eastern Province the ground filled up when the 2nd EP wicket fell. People sneaked out of work and stayed until the great man was out.  That could be the rest of the day and I'm sure some poeple lost their jobs because of the man.
Clobs was right too , Pollock murdered the ball , especially through the cover region. He wasn't particularly pretty , very static stance with feet too far apart , but what an eye and those size 14's moved like those of a ballet dancer!    His very last innings at the age of 44 was against Kim Hughes' rebel Aussie side.  That side was probably a bit long in the tooth , as was Pollock , but he still hit yet another century - the man was simply magnificent.

My thoughts too mate , but when they did make a big one it was always a thrilling experience.

I would have loved to have seen that passage of play when Richards and Pollock scored 103 agains the Aussies in an hour.

Incidentally there is a good article about Barry's triple century here -

Interesting article Clobber. Having not seen the man in action I was able to glean something for my imagination to mull over. I was amused at the way Marsh made a quip to Inverarity about Richards not being all he was cracked up to be after missing his 1st delivery and the reply Swampy received at stumps! Plus the fact that it was the only time Inverarity enjoyed an opponent kicking butt!! Is there footage of this bloke somewhere to be found?

The comment is like when Chris Scott of Durham dropped Lara on 18 and turned to slip and groaned "Oh I suppose he'll get a hundred now" - Lara finished 501*!

I love it how cool marlon samuels is when he bats...he doenst look worried at all, even though this may be to his downfall sometimes.

Love watching Laxman when on form, aswell as Ian Bell and Gibbs when he is playing well...hope he can start to get some form back soon.

Thanks Clobber, it's a shame I wasn't born 5 yrs earlier - it would be worth being 5 yrs older now (!) to have some memories of that sort of timing and elegance.

Talking purely from elegance POV i would rate Mark Waugh and Yuvraj Singh as the best alongside Lara obviously.

Also, among the new faces Rohit Sharma looks very impressive to say the least..looks like he belongs at the international level.

Damien Martyn and Mark Waugh, just this fantastic flow in their batting.
A stylish batsman doesn't need to be brutal when hitting the ball.
Michael Hussey's cover drive is a pleasure to watch as well.
David Gower in his prime was superb, Martyn and Waugh had the same problem as him... which made it all the more frustrating to watch and that was getting out in what looked very soft.

Batsman I don't like watching are Chanderpaul and Amla.
Ideal cricketer: Bowl like Warne, bat like Tendulkar, field like Jonty!!

Ponting surely won't top a list of stylish batsmen Lalinda.

VVS Laxman has to be the most stylish I've seen.

It's no surprise neither got a 200 in test cricket with the way they batted though. Such a pleasure to watch though.

Very true. Mark Waugh was a big underacheiver when you consider the amount of talent he had. He played close to 130 games (not many can do that) but never fully utilized the potential. I guess he just wanted to look good more than any other thing. and good he looked almost always.

Brother Stephen had an average of 51 and didn't look very stylish at all in the latter part of his career. It's kind of a fine line between playing well for the team and entertaining the crowd.

Juinor waugh very stylish, only martyn could claim to equal him in that regard. Right about his record not matching his talent. I think he was one who played more for the enjoyment than records possibly unlike his brother. If mark had concentrated more on records would he have been so fluent a player?

Waugh was more stylish than Martyn in my opinion. Martyn sometimes looked uncomfortable at the crease. But he was still awesome to watch no doubt.

Yes Waugh more stylish definitely. There was a batsmen for pakistan about ten years ago named mohammed wasim. He only played a handfull of tests but was beautiful to watch. Wonder what happened to him?
