VVS Laxman is in a class of his own as far as I'm concerned.

Yes laxman very good. I put him in a class of three who had wonderful talent, were good to watch but who never fully had the records worthy of that talent. Mark Waugh, Laxman and Carl hooper. Hooper while not as stylish certainly was a class act whos record didn't do him justice.

Hooper was a serial underachiever to be quite frank and he should have done better than he did. Bit like Hick or Blewett I suppose.

Yeah hicks another one. I hink this is where steve or sachin have fine records because they make the most of their respective talents. Waugh looked ugly but had the determination and motivation to extract every ounce of talent out of himself. Geoff marsh too had no talent but had the mental toughness to make it for a while at test level.

I agree. Some cricketers are not natural athletes or particularly talented , but they work really hard and are very tough.

You could add taylor to that list. Not a bad record. Got everything out of himself he possibly could.

Yeah, Hooper could tear apart attacks, be it pace or spin. A massive disappointment for the talent he was. He did a bit of justice to it in his last few years but a bit too late.

I think Hooper didn't get on with some of the other senior players in the team. Wasnt there some issue with him not wanting to play in a team captained by lara? Its a shame as seeing those two bat together in a big partnership would be equivalent to watching sachin and laxman, brilliance and style together. I also thought marlon samuels was or is pretty good but whats happened to him?

I fine Left Handers to be a lot more stylish than right handers, although VVS Laxman is one of the most stylish I've seen.
Lara was very stylish, Ganguly's cover drives were a treat to watch. Yuvi looks very stylish at times, Mohammed Yousuf and Azhar were also good. I also find Matthew Hayden to be very styish in his own way... the way he used to smash the ball was sooo good to watch, coming down the track to fast bowlers, and he looked so intimidating! I was like I could watch Hayden bat for full 5 days and still don't get bored! He is one of my favourite cricketers ever! Edited by sam_ahmed - 18 November 2009 at 4:04am |

Samuels was banned for match fixing. He should be available to return to first class Cricket sometime this year I think, later down! He's quite elegant too, pity though, when he really started to play well, he went and got himself into trouble.

For some reason, I`ve never found Laxman or Ganguly to be stylish.
I think De Villiers is really stylish too. Very compact and good techique. Definitely Mohammed Yousuf and Lara. |

Agreed but he has a fantastic eye , which makes him get rather overconfident - it's then he plays across the line and gets out in ugly fashion. |

You like them for their style or for the destructive ability they have/had? If it is for the former I am afraid you are badly mistaken.
Probabaly Saeed, Sanga and Dravid and to some extent Ponting fit in the list but it cant be Sehwag, Miandad, Afridi or Gilly for sure. Miandad was the least stylish player of his era I guess. |

i forgot to mention that it was really not for their styles. you cant find much stylish batsmen from pakistan. Stylish Batsmen from this list would be Saeed Anwar, Gilchrist, Tendulkar, Yuvraj, Dravid and Ponting.
You have right Majid Khan was the most stylish pakistani Batsman. Edited by kahmad - 09 December 2009 at 10:08am |

Tendulkar is more of substance over style. Sometimes his innings are a little hard on the eyes (not that it makes it any less brilliant).
Personally, I`ve always found perfect technique to be stylish while players like Sehwag and Afridi can bore me at times. De Villiers doesn`t have perfect technique but it`s still very good especially for players on this generation and I guess that appeals to me.
I think I`ve said this before but don`t remember but some guy called George Bailey is not too bad either. He played 1 or 2 games in IPL2 as opener of Super Kings. Edited by DRAVID FAN - 09 December 2009 at 11:54pm |

George Bailey? trying to remember who he is. Yes I agree tendulkar can at times be a little ugly. Very good to watch, compact, technically good and sound all round style but lacks the fluency of some others. I dont think sehwag is particularly stylish though.
I still cant go past mark waugh, laxman and to a lesser extent damien martyn. I like the way ABD plays but id hardely call him stylish.
I actually think ian bell has some style about him. may get me attacked and im certainly no fan of his and dont enjoy watching him bat but i think he has quite a stylish technique. The left handers from england bore me to tears though, cook, strauss and before them trescothick, boring!
Mohammed yousaf is quite stylish too, but does anyone remember mohammid wasim from about ten years back?He was very very stylish but barely played a match for some odd reason. He had class and substance to go with his style but apparantly wasnt wanted. Edited by punterrulz - 10 December 2009 at 10:09am |

Remember him. Followed his entire career. He was good. Fulls top. It is not that he was not wanted, he just did not have the place in that middle order with Inzi, Ijaz and Salim Malik around and Yousuf knocking the doors. And its not that he did not get enough chances - he did and he failed to make full use of it. He scored a couple of centuries - his maiden ton was very good. He also had some success in Australia C7U series in 96-97, but that's about it. He had the style and probably had one of the best on drives in the game - but certainly did not have the class or substance.

George Bailey is the captain of Tasmania here in Australia. Pretty decent bat, but first class standard at best. I've seen him a couple of times, he looks good but nothing memorable to be honest.
Mark Waugh is no.1 in my books and perhaps I'm bias.... everything Waugh did had style. From his batting to his brilliant fielding and even to his handy and versatile bowling. |

Yes this is when I saw him in aus in 96/97. Pakistan produce many good players but it seems most fall away before they get a chance to shine. maybe this is because they have so many players they want to give them all a chance and cant settle on a combination.

Zuhair you mention Ijaz Ahmed. The bloke loved playing my boys and has one of the best records against Australia. So many of his tons were against the Aussie side. However I would probably regard him as the LEAST stylish batsman!!!
I guess we can conclude that the idiom 'style over substance' isn't necessarily what's needed. Although for the viewers like ourselves it's great to watch the likes of Mark Waugh, Martyn, Gower, Laxman, Hooper (as I wrote a serial underachiever but Warne rated him as the batsman who probably had the best footwork against spin) even if all those players weren't the best in the side in terms of runs scored. Do you guys prefer seeing batsmen who slaughter attacks like a Cairns or Klusener or someone who plays shots with expert timing and delicacy like M. Waugh or Laxman? For mine it's definitely the latter. I must say any batsman who has a super late cut, wristy leg glances and square drive/cut tends to be a very stylish player. |

Milks - you seem to be high on something matey though you mentioned you hardly take that dose. Never did I mention Ijaz in the STYLISH list. I can't do that i the wildest of my dreams. He was known as a chopper and was far from stylish but yes, he certainly was a damn good back foot player which is why he was so successful in Australia.
I definitely prefer watching style when watching highlights. But in the midst of a cricket match - a gritty innings say that of Kiristen or Prince or Collingwood is worth a watch. |

No No I didn't mean you called him stylish I just said you mentioned his name as someone who played for Pak a lot. By no means is he stylish and nor would you of all people, someone who saw him more than I did, consider him to be stylish. He's in the Katich/Lehmann/Chanderpaul category without a doubt.

Oh lance klusener! what a blugenor if ever there was one. Id prefer to watch a stlish any day, particularly mark waugh, he was so gracefull and elegant it was difficult to believe he was facing 130/140km/h deliveries.
As for gritty batsmen like those mentioned or steve waugh they arent great to watch in themselves but in tough test match situations they are great to watch so its really the context of the match more so then the style. I mean i loathe watching someone like klusener but if i were barracking for sth africa in those 99 world cup matches against australia id love it. Overall mark waugh is incomparable when it comes to style. Just beautiful!

Coincidentally (if that's a word), I saw an innings from Gower just a week or so ago on Zee Sports and man, he really was a treat to watch. Such coolness at the crease and yet the elegance flowed after he picked up the length. Easy on the eyes like Mark Waugh but me still love Laxman the most - leg breaks pitching outside leg gets caressed through covers and balls way outside off can be sent down to midon/mid-wicket. I love watching VVS bat, even if he scores at a strike rate of 30!
