Can't really affect the crowds 143 - no-one's there when the Windies are playing , there can't be many less when they're out!

I await the match with a little trepidation Tonks!
Realistically , England should win in a canter , but they haven't set
the tournament alight yet and tonight might be no different.
The weather forecast is iffy too - persistent thundershowers. It's imperative that England get the two points , even if it takes two days and I see that happening. Run rate could well determine 4th place (the best I see England doing) , so a convincing victory would be most welcome. To do that I'd like to see them bat first and get a big score - Vaughan finally getting a one day hundred wouldn't go amiss either! Ireland can enjoy these matches , they might be minnows but they are organised and have some decent players. Take them lightly and come unstuck should be everyone's mantra. |

Great stuff from NZ, convincing win. Bond once again providing the only real strike power though, Mason turned in a very good performance though too. Vettori cleaned up Ramdin again, he could be a brilliant player if he just stopped sweeping every ball he gets from a spinner.
Styris continued his great WC record, and some great keeping from McCullum. Good to see Oram amongst the wickets again. Next game against bangladesh will either be a cracker or a complete lopsided contest. |

Believe it or not, Styris is averaging 129 in this WC only second behind Kallis??? Averages at the moment mean nothing but NZ are looking the goods despite me saying they are not. My words arent tasting the best let me tell you!!!

Now Bell doesn't seem to know how to play attacking cricket at the moment, a typical Ian Bell innings:
...............11.1............2.1.........4.1.....W
For those who really want to know what that overall score was he would've scored 11 from 52 balls had that knock been genuine.
They should name a stand after Ian Bell at Edgbaston at the moment, the 'Ian Bell Block', sums him up in one word really.
Back to the main cricket, and hopefuly England can get up to 250-260 if they can really take it too the Irish in the last few overs. Edited by Freddie - 30 March 2007 at 6:33pm |

England finish up on 266-7, good finish with 94 coming off the last ten overs, great knock from Collingwood who ended up with 90 from 82 balls, and was unlucky to be run out in the final over, overall a good total and providing they bowl well should be easily enough to take them home. Good supporting roles from Pietersen and Flintoff and Nixon (19 off 15) and Bopara (10 off 5) played well at the end to accelerate up to their final total.
If it wasn't for Ian Bell's block, then England could well've got up to 280-290.

I'd rather have Strauss in at the moment, an out of form Strauss > out of form Bell. As it happens though our middle/lower order has pulled through nicly and done the job for us. Now its up to our bowlers to see what they can do, they have a decent score to defend. Especially on a pitch that has been doing a bit.

I actually thought Bell played himself out of form there - looked in decent enough nick when he arrived but got scratchier and scratchier as he went on. this no doubt pressure building on him as you could be sure he was more aware than anyone else how slowly he was scoring.

He may have looked in good nick but a 74-ball 31 at this level in this era of one-day international cricket is not good enough.

England won by 48 runs.
An unconvincing performance really. England bowled and fielded poorly today (outfielding was good though). Earlier, their top order was non-existent. They will need to improve their game by leaps and bounds if they are to qualify for the semis. I do not see it happening. I think they put down a couple of sitters in the field. Such errors in the field against the better sides in the tournament could mean giving away 30-40 extra runs (if not more).
I do not think England fans will be totally pleased with that performance and understandably so.
Ireland, on the other hand, played quite well I thought. They were good in the field. I think they lost the game because they didn't pace their innings too well. Panesar bowled pretty well and suffocated the batsmen. The Irish should be very happy with their performance and like Niall O'Brien said they are targetting Australia to shock next. hehe
The positive for England is their lower order batting. Flintoff bowled well and its good to see him back. Collingwood bailed England out of trouble yet again and the fans should hope that he continues this form throughout the WC. Edited by scuudz - 31 March 2007 at 12:18am |

I think England's score was WAYYYY too much for the Irish to get too. 266 is a really challenging total!!!!!!!!!!!!

About the crowds, tickets are very expensive as far as locals for concerned. It is not easy at all to pay around $ 200 local money for one match. A Year or so ago i did believed england stand a good chance of reaching the semi with Trescothick doing some damage with KP but now i have reduced england chances by 40% just because Trescothick is missing. I always believed England stand a better chance of winning chasing than defending runs. In the 5 worldcup from 1975 to 1992 England were runners -up (3 times) and semi finalist ( 2 times) so it a bit to say they are the "nearby men" for worldcup glory. I surely can see why they were so successful with the likes of Boycott, Gower, Gatting, Botham and Willis, to me they are really great players, maybe Slegder or Clobber can tell us how good of a player they were.
They surely stand a better chance of winning the worldcup than this current england squad.
Aussie should of batted first and rip the crop out of Bang very badly. Edited by BackFoot Master - 31 March 2007 at 10:36pm |

I think India cricketer are having a great laugh at the moment, easy 10 wickets win for Aussie. O boy, Hayden looks more dangerous than a bunch of lions and tigers put together.
Hayden already stand a good chance for man of the tournament with G. Smith in 2nd place to me. Never expected it though. Edited by BackFoot Master - 31 March 2007 at 10:18pm |
