Topic: The Ashes 2010/11 in Australia Posted: 25 January 2011 at 6:03pm |
I really don't think you have seen any of these one day games sam? If you had you clearly wouldn’t make a statement such as ‘fact of the matter is that AUS are still the best ODI side and they are proving that’ ……..this is so way off the mark and untrue. Clearly England are going through the motions and Australia are so poor they are just getting over the line.
I tend to find it really helps my judgement on games when I actually see the game I’m commenting on, probably why I tend to only comment on Englands games for the most part unless I find time in my busy life to watch other nations play. Australia are definitely NOT proving anything right now.

Spot on Flipper , the performances by Australia as a unit have been far from convincing. Yes Watson's knock was top class , but there's been little else to shout about.
Today in Adelaide England won the toss on a belter and lost Strauss early to Lee, but then Prior and Trott made merry until I started writing this post!! Prior's just gone cutting Smith to point for a fine 67. Trott's on 50 and been joined b y the fit again Pietersen. Still a good start with England on 137-2 after 22.3 overs - this should be well past 300 and will need to be !

Trott hits a ton. Collingwood to bat at 7. Now that give some idea about how serious England are about this series. They are playing just 4 front line bowlers. For sure they are just trying everyone out there for the WC.

299 after 50 overs and as zuhair rightly points out , no 5th bowler. Collingwood will have to bowl plenty and I don't think 299 is enough. To have a chance they need to strike early and get them on the backfoot , but it's a big ask. Those square boundaries are very inviting and there could be plenty of balls having the crowd ducking and diving.

So Australia 92-3 with the most out of form player on the Aussie side falling to the most out of form player on the English side !! Watson still there , but game on now , 18 overs gone.

A win by 21 runs to keep the series alive. Fine century from Trott , backed up by some decent wobbly stuff as well. I can't help thinking though that England just had to win to keep everyone's interest - no matter what nationality. So TV ratings should be sustained at least until Sunday night and maybe a little longer than that.
Rather cynical, what !

Had a feeling England would be back to winning ways on ‘Australia Day’ so typical of England. Trott was Excellent with bat and ball, with two important wickets. Hussey and White can be dangerous when they get themselves set, as we all know. Jimmy Anderson bowled like he’d not been away. Not bad for someone who can’t bowl outside England as some suggested early on in this thread. Overall a good game to watch I thought. Interesting Flower has persisted with Prior at the top of the order and fair enough it payed off.

I think Andreson surprised everyone with his abilities on Australian wickets- I mean if all we Aussies have got to go on is his previous form, then the bloke was averaging with the ball 40 in odi's and 83 in tests. Is it any wonder that we were dubious about his ability on Aussie wickets?

I 100% agree. Even Strauss was cracking a smile at the SCG when they were losing the other night. Broad carrying the drinks. This series means absolutely nothing to the English team. They have the ashes now they are after the World Cup. The whole thing is a glorified net.
You may see people like Finn & Broad play in the last few games just so they can keep their rythym up. The batsman will all play just for practice.

the best way to prepare or practice for the WC would be to win games I would think. if they are doing anything which is making them lose games then I'm afraid they are not on the right track.

Agree wholeheartedly with Sam. There's a very wise saying that goes along the lines of "what you sow is what you reap".
And Flipper, Hammond is spot on, going by Anderson's record, no one (or hardly anyone) was surely going to bet their money on him doing excellently. Didn't think he'd do as bad as previously as you could see there was sure improvement but thought he wouldn't be much of a threat when the new ball shine went. Turns out he didn't really need a new ball shine.

England to win 4 on a trot now! , that's a bold prediction isn't it.
Initially I worte England to win next three and decider I'm not sure , but when I make a wish , let me make compeletely in their favour. |
ENG done and dusted... never had a doubt Raj's predictions will run out of luck soon.
No matter what we think but my view is that Australia are hitting form just at the right time, Ricky and M Hussey will soon be back too and Steven Smith actually hasn't done that badly but I guess he'll be the one to miss out of the playing eleven.
AUS are strengthing their position at the top.

Sam I can only assume you haven't actually seen any of the cricket in this series. England have been dire, Australia merely competent, no other side will be in the slightest bit concerned about the prospect of facing either of these two in the world cup.

This is really poor from an England perspective, Australia really not playing to win and still winning by decent margins. Watson blading a ball in point hand, Haddin being bowled through the leg, Steven Smith actually getting good bowling figures (his decent batting scores doesn't surprise though, his technique is probably rusty but the kid is quite capable with the willow).

Without Broad & Swann this was nothing but a practice hit out. There won't be any tears in the England change room over losing a worthless series that will be forgotten in a month.
Glad that the Aussie fans got something to cheer about. ANd Lee looks the goods to be a real force in the World Cup..
There is a reason why Australia are still number one in odi's after all.
Congrats to MC as well his field placings and bowling choices were actually very good all series.

I am really happy for Lee - he has really come back strong and as Hammond says will be a real force come the WC. Agreed, England have taken the series lightly, but the Aussies have for sured played some good cricket and they will surely be a force in the WC.

Which is good for the World Cup- still can't see them making the semis- if a half strength England side made nearly 300 against them twice- if England had the full bowling line up here they would have brushed Australia aside like they did in the ashes.
That said Australia might do really well against Ireland & Bangladesh!

Very disappointing batting yet again - I feel for the bowlers who've strived manfully but without much reward. Woakes showed just what a prospect he is , but Shazhad's injury means he's being replaced by Plunkett - that's some journey (from the caribbean) for a single match and he might not even start in it! Brett Lee turned back the years which has to be a huge fillup for the Aussies and Clarke finally made some runs. Smith chipped in with some wickets , but I'm still not convinced that he's a frontline bowler. Well done Australia , but this series victory must seem hollow after what happened in the proper cricket.

But their batting was anyways full strength mate. True, they are experimenting but the English one day side is definitely not as strong as their test side. i think england will find it more difficult to reach the semis than the Aussies.

The way they're performing they won't make the semis mate. I'm hoping that the return of Swann ,Bresnan and Broad will lift them - they will be stronger with their inclusion.

Sledge, their bowling will suit the sub-continent conditions more than the English attack. I am sure England will be much stronger when they are full strength - but the Aussies are certainly not that bad in this format. Their batters are struggling but I expect White and Hussey alongside Watson to score big runs on those pitches. No way this Aussie team is going out of the WC cheaply. and making to the semis, by the way wont be that easy to predict as everything will come to that one big match in the QF - could be anyone's day.

AUS will be a force in the WC, absolutely no doubting that, and if you do, do it at your own peril.

Hammond, if England doesn't have any emphasis on this ODI series, then they should just stay away from the WC!!

Why exactly? Some cheap odi series against a team they already beat in the real game, versus a once every 4 years international tournament? Why would they risk further fatigue and injury on the eve of the biggest odi event in cricket?
As I said before the team that takes the field on the 22nd Feb versus Netherlands is one you won't remotely recognise to the one that has pottered around having a net in the last 4 games.

Mate it doesn't matter. It didn't matter in 2009 and it doesn't matter now. The ashes are retained, and England are getting good practice for the WC- there is method in the madness.
