I think sledge has put it very well. Ashes matter more but to say "the only thing that mattered has been already won" is not an excuse at all for ENG poor ODI performances that too since a very very long time.

ENG are a major force in the world of cricket, it's a game they've invented. no cricketing fan would want them to worry only about The Ashes and nothing else. we want to see a more competative English side in the limited overs format so that there can be better competition among the teams. winning The Ashes is very important and it means a lot, I understand that, but behaving as if nothing needs to be won / it doesn't matter if nothing is won for the next two years is not what the cricketing world wants.

7-0 is on , but England should sneak one , maybe two of the remaining matches. That's because Australia would be quite keen to play the same mob in SA later this month!

The Ashes is the pinnacle in the cricketing careers of both Englishmen and Australians , but the World Cup matters too and until England start to win one day series on a regular basis , it'll remain a pipe dream.

Ponting has won 3 World Cups, been a runner up in the World Cup once (in 96), won the Champion's Trophy and has won the Ashes in 97, 98/99, 01, 02/03 and 06/07 (i.e. Both home and away). No Englishman has done that... certainly the English would want to improve their one day cricket no doubt.

The World Cup is a different kettle of fish, but these series tacked on at the start or end of Test series are totally inconsequential, and getting wound up about them is ridiculous - England will no doubt be touched by Sam's concern though.

Just to put it in context, I can't even remember who won the one day series in 2005.

There were 2 in that series Clobs. The first one was a triangular tournament with Bangladesh and there was another one with just England and Australia. I remember the 2nd series was tied, but I have no bloody clue about the triangular one. From memory it was an excellent contest though... famous series as Bang beat Aust.

The triangular series ended up with a low scoring tie in the final. The other 3 match series I have no idea about.

To further emphasise the point that no one really cares about these one day series, who thinks England fans look back on the 2006-7 tour and say "great tour, won the VB series", or do they go "what a disaster, 5-0 in The Ashes"?

I went to that VB series final here in Melbourne. I was right up next to the English dressing room and had a chat with Paul Nixon.... why could I do such a thing? The MCG was probably 1/8th full. 7 ODIs, 2 2020s + a game against minnow sides for both teams is way too much. I remember back in 1997 they had a 3 match ODI series before the Ashes (England won 3-0) played in whites and during the day. Then the 6 tests were played. Much, much better - those ODIs almost served as a warm up for the sides and an 'inspection' of what is to come in the tests. Yes, I am bitter about losing the Ashes, although Australians can still hang their heads up high as they weren't outplayed THAT much, but these ODIs are not going to make up for anything. A win at the CT however will make the loss in the Ashes a little les sour though - but not too much.

Australia won that second series in 05 2-1, memorable only for the only century Trescothick ever scored for England against Australia.

Ahh I got it mixed up. A little look in the archives would have solved the problem. Then again I don't really care and I think we proved Clobber's point.

We all know that people have different things of higher importance than some and it doesn't bother me if one thinks the Ashes is more important or if winning the WC is more important than winning a test series, it's just human nature but to say that a particular series isn't important is the wrong mentality to have, if you're a player and seems like some of the English players have that mentality.

If that's the case, they might as well just play the Ashes and participate in no other tournament!  Yes, the Ashes is very important, no problem in that but if you're not willing to win everything you play, then it's no wonder they play Cricket the way they do (the shorter format) just like Gayle played the Test Series in England like I don't even know how to describe.

I have known few cricket die hard fans, who don't even care about Test matches. They just love to ODI's and T20s. Now if someone calls them they don't know real cricket, then I would say it's your perspective coz in their perspective Test cricket is boring affair.Thats it!. An American once told me "Oh Cricket, it's so boring , baseball is much better", well that was his perspective on cricket. I explained how interesting cricket is and left it that way.

When I play at local grounds (I'm not a professional player , not even close albeit decent allrounder for local playgrounds)  or even if my friends play in a local match , I would want them to win at all cost. It's amazing and I fail to understand how England not winning becomes inconsequential?

Yes agreed , Ashes remains more important no doubts about it.Still how can losing a match (of international status) does not bother a cricket fan (even if it is unofficial , should be a matter of concern for me). I can understand it if a person who does not watch ODI format  says that.

Maybe it's again individual perspectives!!!

The English have been very nonchalant about one day cricket for a long time. That kind of attitude doesn't exist in Australia and certainly not on the sub continent where limited overs cricket is extremely important, and if anything overplayed.

I concur with Clobs that these one day money spinners after test series are of little consequence , but how are struggling outfits like England going to improve if they don't start winning some of them?
Pals have been trying to wind me up because of the latest debacle and they've been disappointed because I don't rise.  Losing 7-0 won't affect my sleep patterns , but before dropping off it will cross my mind (I still have one) that no matter who's in charge of the setup , we're still rubbish!
Maybe it's time for a complete clearout , discard the test "stars" (i use that term loosely) and get a side of kids with the soul aim of winning the world cup. They'll lose a shedload of matches early on but it just might give rise to a decent , spritely outfit. Employ a coach and backroom staff that aren't associated with the test side - effectively have two separate entities that call themselves England.

Radical , but the methods used for nigh on 20 years haven't yielded any silverware (forget Sharjah!) - it's time for revolution!

Blimey , my tea was strong this morning!

To me it is simple milky, if you follow some format and follow some sport "You would always want your team to win".If you don't follow it , then you would never care about it.

I play at local standards, and you know what, I hate to lose a match even at that level.

I think it is because of their lacklusture performances in shorter formats, few fans and english media act as if ODI and T20 are jokes.I remember when England toured India long time back (flintoff jersy swinging like Football player series) they had intensity then.If I am right till the Gooch-Lamb-Gatting-Smith era (early 90's) , they were good in ODI format when England was taking ODI seriously.

If England puts up decent showing in shorter formats you would see ODI's becoming important.

The long suffering English fans do think one day cricket is important, why else do they fork out 75quid to watch the current series?

Wright, one of the OD specialists is injured , in training also. Is there something wrong with the coaching as well? Perhaps Sledger is right, new coaching staff and new players for ODIs for England. The Australian 2020 side after the disaster in that WorldT20 is going through a complete change now according to the selectors.

I've said it before, this current squad doesn't have any fire power to trouble any good ODI side.  There is no dasher at the top, Aussie had Gilly, SA has Smith, Windies Gayle, India Sehwag and Gambhir, Sri Dilshan and Jaya, even the Kiwi has a dashers at the top, they need someone to give them an electric start and now that you think of it, Trescothick has been a very huge loss!

England have gone with the same side, bar Wright making way for Mascheranas. Lee is being rested and Siddle plays his first game. English selectors need to check out this forum quicksmart.

England not off to a bad start, 66-1 off 14 overs with Strauss being unlucky to be given out after getting a bit of glove on to his pad attempting a reverse sweep.

He shouldn't have been playing such a daft shot so early on, especially with the powerplay still on.
Watson gets Bopara in his first over - he's the man with the golden arm at the moment. Bopara has seriously used up all his chances plus someone elses chances as well!

So, in the end England makes a respectable 299 all out in 50 overs and as I said earlier, I love it when teams accerlerate at the end and this here started with Morgan and he showed me another side that I didn't know.  Players like him (in the Chanderpaul mold) will exploit powerplays well because they more so use placement than power and Morgan played well.

One things for sure, England will have the best lower order batting in World Cricket if/when Rashid, Broad and Swann plays together although how they bowl will have a say in if that combination will be possible.

That's what I wanted to see from Morgan. He always plays much better when he plays with this kind of freedom to his strokeplay. This is the sort of batting which got him noticed by the England selectors and long may he keep it up.

Trott and/or Lumb should get a go in this series in place of Bopara. His batting's been poor in this series, and his bowling is pointless at the International level until he decides to get his brain into gear and start bowling with a bit of guile

Great knock by Ponting, showing his class just like Jayasuriya and Tendulkar showed earlier this week. He look really on song in the 4th ODI with that 48 and the rest has done him good in this game and he is the difference between the sides. Only thing England can take out of this game is that they batted extremely well in the final 10. But all their batsmen got starts and didn't go on with it and that must be worrying Flower and Strauss (while Australia have to century makers and Ferguson has played a couple of good knocks).
Eion Morgan was a fresh of breath air, his innovation and pretty good clean hitting for a small bloke - almost Tendulkar-esque - was simply brilliant. Plays the slog and reverse sweep really well and that shot over extra cover that nearly went for six was a gem (and so was that flick off his legs for six!).
The intent from the English batsmen was fantastic , but like I said only one man got past 50 from memory and a lot of starts and double figure scores. That's okay, but the next step is to have someone make a big score. Perhaps Morgan is wasted at 6, should be at 4 or 5 maybe?

England seem to be clueless in long ODI series. The same thing happened when they toured India last time.I guess they start the series in a relaxed mode and then once the opponent gets the momentum its over.

Maybe I am wrong and Aussies are really playing like champions again.CT will give answers for sure.

forget about Morgan being wasted, Morgan shouldn't be playing for ENG. He is an Irishman who should have been playing for IRE. ENG are robbing emerging countries of their talent and then we hear Sledge and Clobs saying so many things against the minnows like they should be playing in other divisions, Should never be playing tests etc... Thats simply ridiculous. Why should ENG be allowed to borrow players like this. IRE would be such a good side with Morgan, Joyce and other such home grown players, but as long as ENG is there it'll be very very difficult for teams like IRE and SCO to develop. Angry

We didn't "borrow" them Sam , they made the conscious decision to qualify for England!  Don't fret too much on Scotland either , they'll always be rubbish!
Better effort last night , at least the crowd saw a competitive match. Morgan's hitting was a treat , a lovely thwack when connecting so sweetly! Pity about the dismissal though , in fact several were pretty tame. Ponting looked all class with Clarke just in cruise control - if they'd have batted first I'd have thought they'd get around 350.
Bresnan has the knack of nipping good players out , never a bad thing in any form of the game. The rest of the attack looked toothless really and Australia were always going to win.
A big up to the curator , that was as good a one day pitch as England can provide. Nice carry , even bounce , the batters were just hitting through the line and getting value for their shots.
Bopara must go and Trott given the last two games , if Wright is fit I'd think of leaving Sidebottom out and retaining Mascharenas. Rashid needs more time , but where are the wickets coming from , we need a Brett Lee !

why can't Ian Bell get a chance ahead of Trott. This is what ENG's problem is, too many changes all the time, too many people making debuts in every series. They need to persist with their players. Bell is a fine ODI player. I don't know what happened to Collingwood? Is he injured?

by the way it was really good to see Ponting scoring a brilliant century. He was struggling a bit and after losing the Ashes he really needed this.

Colly was rested. He has had a LONG season and deserves the well earned rest. I agree Bell is a fine OD player - but then they are English selectors.

and why are ENG wearing Red? I don't like this at all, this is ZIM's colour. Teams need to stick to their own colours,  Dark Blue looked good on ENG.

I think they are looking smart in these clothes - though I am not a huge fan of teams changing their basic traditional colors. Dont like Aussies in green either.
