IMO Dhoni's a slightly better keeper too, at least a more improved one.
Ideal cricketer: Bowl like Warne, bat like Tendulkar, field like Jonty!!

Considering about 2 year till date and balance, I would go for this team
Chris Gayle
Tendulkar
Gambhir
Ricky Ponting
Kevin Pietersen
Jacques Kallis
Dhoni (wk)
Vettori (C)
Lee
Johnson
Zaheer

I would have loved to include Shewag, Yuvraj, Smith, ABD, Flintoff, Hussey, Ross, Afridi,Yousuf, Amir, Murali,Mendis,Sanga, Sakib, Chanderpaul and Bravo on their recent preformances.
Race to No 1 again ... started!

Long batting line up there Raj. Could have thrown in an extra spinner if you're basically batting til 10.

Gayle will bowl a lot of overs I guess - more than Kallis for sure.

One spinner I like watching is Danish Kaneria. Love his action. Shame he can't be more consistent, he could have been effective in ODIs if he sorted his game out better.

vettroi, lee,Johnson and Zak main bowlers. While Kallis,Gayle and Tendukar can bowl the remaining quota of 10 overs.Yes for a Test side I might axe one allrounder and add an extra spinner on sub-continent pitches.

EDIT: Much better go with only two fast bowler+allrounder and two spinners.

To be honest I don't like him. He is a hard worker - yes. But, damn too inconsistent and lacks penetration.

Afridi'd make my side in T20, nowhere else...
But even in that arena I wouldn't put Bravo or Yusuf in, and the half the names aren't even spelt right.
You know, I'm trying to decide whether to change my siggy or not...

I personally don't think anyone since about 1985 could be considered great. Warne was an average leg spinner in a world without any leg-spinners. All batsman are spoilt by uncovered pitches. Fast bowlers are spoilt by bowler friendly rule changes. Cricket is an old game and there are plenty in the last 120 years that could have competed with the players of now. Easily. I suppose it's human nature to think that "now is better". It aint.

Hammond, you're probably on weed or I'm missing some figure of speech you're trying to use.  Warne average?  And I don't care which batsman you are, yo could be Bradman, Richards, Sobers etc, them couldn't be brutalizing McGrath and Ambrose.  Them 2 bowlers would easily hold them own against any quality batsman.

And I guess it's human nature to think that what you grow up on is the best way.  Don't say it ain't so because what people grow up accustom to, they pass on those stuff to their kids, for instance, what they eat for lunch, dinner etc.

You are backing up my point- and I gave up weed a long time ago Wink

My point is that O'Reilly would still be getting 5 fors today, Jessop would still be getting 50 minute centuries, Tibby Cotter would still be breaking limbs and Bradman would still be averaging 100. Even against McGrath & Ambrose. Who knows? Even WG might favour regularly slapping Dale Steyne through the cover point region.

And in some cases, like Warne, the batsman from the past would have played him better having been used to Grimmett, Hordern, Mailey, Wright, Bousenquet etc.

Anyway off the point.

Hammond, would be interesting to hear your views on Dale Steyn - just how good do you rate him?  Anyhow, WG might slap him through covers but i'm willing to bet my house that Dale Steyn is way more than capable of dismissing any batsman currently alive and dead.  No matter how good you are, 145+ KPH outswingers would have anyone in trouble.

Heard Steyn let go a belter of a spell on day 3 of the last test match, just wish I could have seen it.

And good to see you liked Bond, he's another that I think is a ripper of a fast bowler, don't matter how good a batsman you are, Bond is quite capable of destroying you.

Steyn is potentially a great fast bowler. Bond was too excepting the injury issues. From what I've read Kortright was the fastest ever. He bowled a ball in a county game that cleared the ropes after it bounced once on the pitch. He'd love bowling at certain modern batsman with dodgy batting techniques I'm sure.

Steyn's up there already and is a fantastic athlete , he'll pass the SA wicket taking record and probably surpass Courtney Walsh's five hundred and odd as well!
As for the quickest , Benaud reckoned Frank Tyson the fastest he ever saw - a tad quicker than Thommo !

That would be about right- Kortright, then Tyson, then Thommo and then Holding probably..

Sledger, the rate that Dale Steyn is going with, the fast bowling record of most wickets will be going to him.  When he ages, his average should get better due to him being more economical.  Steyn has already shown he has learned well over the last few years.  He doesn't always bowl out and out fast now, he leaves that for when it is required.

No SW , Steyn is terrific , but no quick bowler will have the longevity to take 800 test wickets.  Courtney Walsh's supreme fitness and lovely action made him as close to the perfect quickie , but even he had to give way to old father time.  Over 500 wickets for the speedster, in my eyes was a greater achievement than either Murali's 800 or Warne's 700

I think SW means he will break the fast bowling record not Murali's. And he may well be right here.

Haha

Anyhow, good to see a terrific fast bowler on the scene.  I really love watching Steyn bowl but he gives my teams to many nightmares, that's the only problem.

What's sad is that Steyn is really the only fast bowler playing today - no other generates the excitement that he does when he's at his best.

Amir did for a while - but that was for a really short period. Hope he returns clean, which will be good for cricket and fast bowling.

Yes Zuhair, quite right.  For that same reason, i'm hoping Asif is clean but with his record, might only be a matter of time before he ends up in trouble again.
