I keep on closing my eyes when I try to hook and therefore mistime it most of the time(Though once I swung at it so hard that even though I mistimed it it went for SIX!!

that kid has a pretty decent action!
as you have already pointed out his head is dropping, this is perhaps because he is trying to bowl too fast, get him to look at where he wants to land the ball and never take his eyes off that spot. also, i noticed his bowling arm finishes between his legs rather than outside his left one, this is stopping him following through properly and probably stunting pace. he should be following through to at least half the length of his runup also maybe his gather or coil is a bit loose, try to get his two arms slightly closer with his bowling hand in his eyeline, this will help accuracy, make sure he does not change the side he looks through his non bowling arm make sure he really pulls his front arm down and out aswell. ![]() |

Please have a look at this young kid and see if you can spot what he is doing wrong apart from he obvious one of dropping his head to the left.

do you ever get back problems?
your front arm should go up, out and down, you need to have long levers (arms) so it sould be almost stretched out at one point and it sould come down and almost rest on your front leg thigh with the elbow at the bottom of the hip.
to get your bowling arm coming over straighter, make sure your front arm doesnt pull your non bowling side completely out of the way, just make sure it rests on your thigh, and just make sure you follow through straight down the wicket towards the batsman
i hope that helps

I can cut very well although I'm quite limited with it. I can't play a late cut, I'm more of one who either looks for brutal power when cutting which usually flies over point or when I'm looking for placement, it goes infront. Still only one shot really, it all depends on the speed of the ball coming to me. If it's fast, It goes mostly to backward point although I can't seem to get one to the left of backward point, it's always infront. I'm right handed.

your timing...you have to time it late for a late cut and slightly earlyer for a forward cut, just find the middle for the square cut?
also maybe have a look at your footwork, make sure your back foot is getting across ok.

jsut get your bowlers piching it up to him and make him move his feet to it!
i dont really know what to say but i hope that helps

I have a young batsman who tends to just rotate his body about on his feet and does not move his feet much. I have tried to get him to be more mobile but its not working. He just uses his feet as an anchor.
Are there are any exercises or techniques which I can use to get him to be moving his feet to get in position more? |

yeah, exactly what NZF said, but also your arms are flailing about in your gather, that may feel comfortable but this will make you either incedibly inconsistent, or very inacurate or both, probably you are great on a good day and rele bad on a bad day, not much inbetween...
your bowling hand should be somewhere near your neck and you should be able to see your hand holding the ball infront of your eyes at one time if not all the time, this will give you a visual clue and make your more acurate
your non bowling arm should be slightly more controlled...i cant explain what i mean but your action should be much righter really.

Well from that angle you've filmed it on, it certainly looks like your front on. The main thing I immediatly notice is that your right leg sort of flails around when you actually deliver the ball. What you should be doing is powering it through the crease, towards the batsmen, a little like your doing a knee up with it....sorry i just find it hard to explain what i quite mean. http://youtube.com/watch?v=XzuOyXOQoUI Watch the guy with white t-shirt and black long pants in this. His right leg, although not 'driving' as much as he should, that is the sort of thing you should be doing, rather than just having it flailing around a bit like a spinner.

I always say, do what feels best to the body no matter how wrong it looks. If people saw Colin Croft run up and delivery etc and didn't know nothing about his stats, they might have thought of him as a crap bowler - he use to run and jump away from the stumps and deliver in an angle. Wierd.
Well, I hope he just didn't do that in the highlights I saw of him. Edited by spin wizard - 04 June 2008 at 11:03pm |

Help!!! I've started off the new season with a real rubbish average (avg0 from 4innings) !!!
I just don't feel right at the crease and keep getting out caught behind or stumped and all the other ways you can get out when your not in good nick. I just can't drive the ball on the off anymore, my flicks to leg go no further than a foot or two and my once so reliable defence can no longer keepout 60mph medium pacers! i have commented in on your other post about this...
NZF has got it completeley right
the twisting front foot is a very big problem, it is the problem that flintoff has, although flintoffs might be slightly worse since that foot is the only thing side on through the whole action...but if your bowler is wearing studs the grip will really hurt when he is trying to twist his ankle, that problem really needs to be flixed. also you say you think he is side on, bring him back to basics and get him facing that front foot forward and making sure everything else is tip top and your good!

To my knowledge there are basically 2 forms of 'mixed' actions:
The only way to cheak for a mixed action is to stand (or sit if you want) behind the bowler and watch him bowl 6-12 balls
1. See if he subconciously changes from side on to front on, or the other way around if his action is changing from delivery to delivery, yes it is a mixed action and the lad needs to be taken right back to just standing in the crease and bowling with what feels like his most natural action and slowly build up to coming in off 2 paces, 4 paces, 6 paces, 10 paces...full run up eventually.
2. Sometimes a bowler doesn't have multiple actions, but instead has somewhat of a hybrid action where they may open chested, but the BACK foot is side on (for open chested actions the backfoot should be straight down the pitch). Or, they may bowl side on with the back foot straight down the pitch which they should only do for open chested actions.
As for the front foot being initially planted parallel to the crease and then straightening, well thats not good. It doesn't really affect pace or accuracy, but that twisting at high speed really strains the knee, and if he keeps doing it will surely get big knee injuries.

I have a youngster who is bowling side-on I think. He tends to turn his
chest side-way although that is not his natural action; he tends to go
chest facing batsman naturally. His front front lands parallel to the
crease (ie at 90 degress to the wicket - not facing dfown the wicket)
and then he turns his foot as he bowls.
His action does not look normal - there is something wrong. He has also complained of backache once or twice. I wonder if he has a mixed action. How can I spot if he has a mixed action? |

hi i am new to this forum and i am a fast bowler since the age of 8.
my natural bowling action is slinging action. but for last 2 years i didn't play
cricket. now i am bowling with a straight arm action. but i think my straight arm action is more accurate than the old slinging action but it is too slow. my old arm action is very quick and i like to bowl very quicker. but when i am bowling with the straight arm action my over is very expensive than the other action.
at the moment i have no option to do please any one try to help with my action. i dont know what action to bowl at the moment. Edited by prasha - 01 June 2008 at 8:44pm |

Practice more and this is easy. When you're walking and you pass a stone on the ground, take it up and throw at an object (not someone or their animal mate). Concentration plays a lot in all key aspects of cricket too!

You have to get that fear of being hit out of your mind, well, to an extent at least and make your footworks faster so it can trigger a faster instinct. A higher batlift makes one eyes light up more and also the instinct so that can be another option but beware of the deadly yorker!

i used to do that too. ive been put onto a middle/middle and off stance (with cones behind my feet to stop me stepping away..), with a trigger movement onto middle and off or off and it gets me in line so much better, just be confident that you are not gna get hit.
